Bicycle Friendly Community meeting Wednesday night

city of st joseph seal logoThe City of St. Joseph Health Department hosts the fifth in a series of public meetings on “Bicycle Friendly Communities” Wednesday night. The meeting will focus on education, teaching bicycling skills, safe riding habits, and how to reach out to the driving public with relevant messaging.

This is the 5th in a series designed to inform the public on the attributes of becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community.

The open-format meetings began last September and have been informational for attendees as well as a place for planners to gather feedback from the public regarding the concept of St. Joseph becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community.

The public is encouraged to attend. Bicyclists have an obvious interest, but becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community will impact everyone who uses the streets and hike and bike trails in St. Joseph. The meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the 2nd floor conference room of the health department. After entering the front door of the health department, take the stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor and enter Suite E; the conference room will be on your right. For more information, call (816) 236-1491.

16th Street house fire electrical in origin

2404 S 16th dAn electrical problem is blamed for a house fire that caused extensive damage to a home in the 2400 block of South 16th Street Tuesday.

St Joseph Fire Department Inspector Jason Ziph says the fire caused an estimated $50,000 damage to the house at 2404 S. 16th.

A woman was checked out by paramedics at the scene but was not transported to the hospital. There were no injuries reported.

Mr. Ziph says the cause of the fire was electrical.

Fire crews had their hands full putting out the blaze. Dispatchers first sent police to the address on a “check for trouble” call. Subsequent to that they received the report of a debris fire, and after that they dispatched a full fire department response to put out a structure fire.

An old, malfunctioning fire hydrant complicated efforts to put out the fire, which was reported just three blocks from a fire station.

9-1-1 hang up becomes fully-involved structure fire

St Joseph Fire Department crews had their hands full in the 2400 block of South 16th Street Tuesday afternoon.

What started as a “check for trouble” and a “9-1-1 hang up” became a “debris fire” and then finally a fully-involved “structure fire.”  Crews were hampered putting out the fire by a malfunctioning or broken fire hydrant.  The house is about three blocks from a fire station.

At least one person was checked out by paramedics.  It was not immediately known if the woman was taken to the hospital.  She was talking with paramedics at the scene.

Crews removed a section of the roof to gain access to the rear of the home at 2404 S. 16th, and once they secured a water source, were able to aggressively fight the blaze.

A fire investigator was expected at the scene.

Sen. McCaskill announces nomination process for military academies

McCaskillU.S. Senator Claire McCaskill announced that her office has begun the process for nominating young Missourians to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for an appointment to the Class of 2021.

“It’s an honor to be able to help students who want to dedicate themselves in service to our great nation and strengthening its military,” said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Missouri’s best and brightest compete for spots at these prestigious institutions and uphold our state’s patriotic tradition of military service.”

Eligible Missourians can apply on the Senator’s website, HERE.

Candidates for a Congressional nomination must be a resident of Missouri and a U.S. citizen; at least 17 years old and not past his or her 23rd birthday by July 1 of the year of admission; unmarried with no children or dependents; and able to meet high leadership, academic, physical and medical standards. For the Merchant Marine Academy, the upper age limit is 25. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination.

McCaskill had the honor of nominating 16 Missourians from across the state who accepted appointments to one of the four academies for the Class of 2020.

To ensure that nominations to the Service Academies are based on merit and every applicant has a fair chance to compete for available openings, McCaskill uses a Service Academy Recommendation Committee made up of community leaders from around Missouri. The committee reviews each application and recommends candidates for nomination. Applicants must complete the online questionnaire and submit all other application items to McCaskill’s St. Louis district office on or before October 3, 2016 to be considered for a nomination.
