Mermaids and sea creatures will take to the frozen waters in a spring production at Bode Ice Arena next week.

The St. Joseph Figure Skating Club presents “The Little Mermaid, Under the Frozen Sea” on Friday, May 20, Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22.

The three shows will feature 78 local performers from the figure skating club and the city of St. Joseph’s Learn to Skate program. Audiences will see elaborate skating routines that showcase the singing mermaid Ariel, the evil sea witch Ursula and a host of fish and crustaceans.

“We’ve had good shows in the past, but I feel this is going to top them all,” said Debbie Cole-Gerber, the show director in St. Joseph. “The sets are bigger. The props are more in-depth. There’s a lot more that went into it.”

With familiar songs like “Storm at Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” audiences will find that this mermaid story translates easily to the ice, Cole-Gerber said.

“When they did it on Broadway, they did it on roller-skates,” she said.

Special performers will include both the beginner and advanced Griffon Gliders synchronized skating teams from St. Joseph. Skaters come from schools across the St. Joseph area.

All performances are held at Bode Ice Arena, 2500 Southwest Parkway, in St. Joseph. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, May 20; 7 p.m., Saturday, May 21; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22.

Tickets are $7 for ages 13 and up, $3 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for anyone age 3 and younger. Tickets can be purchased by calling 816-271-5506 or contacting Cole-Gerber at debgosk8@gmail.com. Tickets also can be purchased at the door prior to each show.

Sewer rate increase public hearing to be held in June

press release
Press Release (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

The City of St. Joseph plans to hold a public hearing to consider the results of a study recommending an increase in sewer rates.

The city released a draft sewer rate study that examines the cost of service and revenue requirements for 2017. The study recommends an overall increase in city sewer charges of an average 15 percent. Rates for residential customers would go up 15.5 percent under the proposal. Rates for most commercial and industrial customers would go to 16.6 percent, while secondary wholesale treatment customers would receive facility specific increases averaging to 9.3 percent.

The city said the 15 percent overall increase is consistent with the commitment City Council made last year regarding the anticipated increase in fiscal year 2017. The increases are proposed to go into effect on August 1, following review and consideration by City Council.

The rate study also projects rate increases needed for subsequent years following fiscal year 2017. The city said the level of required increases is projected to be less. It said the report also confirms that the city has made good progress on the issue of reducing bad debt expense, while acknowledging that it is still a contributor to rate increases.

A public hearing and work session to consider the results of this rate study will be held in early June. It said a date for that meeting will be announced in the near future.

Comments regarding the proposed rates can be directed to Bill Heatherman, director of Public Works & Transportation at bheatherman@stjoemo.org and for more information the city said to call (816) 271-4653.

A man is accused of trying to run from officers in St. Joseph earlier this week after allegedly trying to sell a stolen scooter.

James Galen Pace, 28 listed as homeless is charged in Buchanan County with a felony for first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

According to court documents, on Tuesday police responded to the 2500 block of South 16th in reference to a man and a woman trying to sell a scooter that appeared to be stolen.

“According to the witness statement, the defendant tried to sell him the scooter for $150. Upon police arrival they made contact with the defendant and a female,” said Det. Chase Cotter with the St. Joseph Police Department. “The defendant claimed to own the scooter and advised he had purchased it and had the title. The ignition to the scooter was tampered and the defendant did not have proof of ownership.”

Det. Cotter said when the officer learned the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Atchison, Kan. he tried to arrest Pace.

“He fled on foot. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit,” Det. Chase said. “The defendant has a history of possessing stolen vehicles, having been arrested with one less than one week ago.”

Pace was reportedly arrested May 5 for tampering and has convictions for theft, assault, two for possession of a controlled substance and two for domestic assault.

Bond has been set at $25,000 an arraignment is set for Tuesday.

Is Goetz Brewery returning to downtown St Joe?

Goetz Beer labelAn icon of St Joseph history is slated to return to downtown St. Joe next year.

Restaurateurs Erik Borger and Dustin Smith have bought the former Goetz barrel factory and hope to reintroduce Goetz’s German-style beer to a whole new generation.

According to the lifestyle magazine “Feast,” the pair announced purchase of the building at 601 N. 4th St. The pair plan to remodel and reopen the 12,000 square foot facility “…as a working brewery, taproom, restaurant, event space and beer garden.”

Borger and Smith reportedly received permission from Pabst Brewing Co. for the rights to brew under the Goetz brand name and for use of the original logo, label art and branding. They’ve worked out a royalty and distribution agreement, with Pabst asking for the opportunity to review the future head brewer for Goetz Brewing Co. to ensure he or she meets their expectations for a leading beer company.

“Although, it is 100 percent my decision as to who I hire as my head brewer at Goetz, I agreed to allow Pabst the opportunity to review my choice to ensure that person meets their professional standards – which should, hopefully, be no different than my standards,” Borger tells the magazine.

Borger explains that the new brewery will be large enough to distribute regionally, but ready to scale as needed. Goetz Brewing Co. will open with a 30-barrel system with the capacity to add fermenters as needed to ramp up production based on demand. The pair anticipates a lot of pent-up demand for this much-loved local brew.
