Lifeguard training programs to kick off in St. Joseph

Swim, PoolThe City of St. Joseph and the American Red Cross is teaming up to provide Lifeguard Training Programs.

A pre-test will be held for free to individuals interested in participating in the lifeguard training program on May 13. The city said those interested in earning a two year life-guard certificate must first complete the pre-test. The pretest consists of a 300 yard continuous swim, treading water for 2 minutes using only the legs, and completing a timed event that includes starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface for breathing, and exiting the water without using the ladder.

Participants must be 15 years old by May 19, 2016. This must be verified by an official birth certificate or state issued ID.

The Community Lifeguard Program will then meet from Monday, May 16 through Thursday, May 19 according to the City’s website from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost for that is $150.00.

The first and largest Monarch Waystation in northwest Missouri has been completed.

Missourians for Monarchs – Naturalists & Gardeners (“MO4M”) announced  Sunday that it began work on its first Waystation at a location just past Camp Geiger off of K Highway. The project included planting over four hundred milkweed and over one hundred other nectar plants for Monarchs and other pollinators. Encompassing a large area, the project will eventually become 10 acres of habitat restoration.

“We are so appreciative of receiving a grant from Monarch Watch with funds supplied by the Natural Resources Defense Council,” said David Laderoute, Regional Coordinator for the Northwest Region of MO4M. “The grant is for restoration milkweed and is the first of its kind in Missouri, to my knowledge. We are elated.”

Mort Nelson is the owner of the private land for the project.

“I am happy to be part of this project to help Monarch butterflies and am honored to be the final recipient of this grant from Monarch Watch,” Nelson said.

Laderoute said with the exception of a few seedlings being held for Girl Scouts to plant at the habitat area they project was finished Wednesday. The project is one of nine in northwest Missouri that MO4M is working on. Other projects include the Erin Hook memorial Purpose Garden at the new Y facility.

You meet the nicest people along the barbecue trail!

Gregg Swardson
Gregg Swardson
Civic Center park was a bustle of activity Friday, gearing up for one of St Joe’s tastiest events.

The annual barbecue contest during Apple Blossom weekend is sponsored by the Northwest Missouri Children’s Advocacy Center. We caught up with Event Coordinator Melissa Birdsell, going from tent to tent, and smoker to smoker, in a golf cart, making sure everything fit their recipe for the competition.

“We have 35 teams coming,” Birdsell said, “nine are from here in St Joe. I think that’s the most we’ve ever had.

“We’ve got six states represented. They come in all day, they park, they set up their smokers, we do a meat inspection, and once they’ve been inspected and they’re all good to go they can start cooking.”

Friday night’s feature gives the audience a chance to judge. The “People’s Choice” competition pits barbecue kings and queens against each other cooking the same cut of meat.

“We open the tent at six o’clock. These guys are cooking pork loins, and everyone can taste all of the different ones, and then you vote for your favorite,” Birdsell said.

The winner gets a trophy and $1,000. But the weekend is not limited to loins. Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., the events revolve around the Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned barbeque contest. Gregg Swardson of St. Joseph is the pit boss for the team “Crazy Bones Barbecue.”

“We’ll start tonight about 10 o’clock,” Swardson says. “Gary will put his brisket on and then probably 12:30 I’ll put my pork roast on, and we’ll get them going all night on the smoker.”

“In the morning I’ll put my chicken on my other smoker, and Sabrina will put her ribs on shortly after that. And then at noon, everything starts coming together. We have to turn in chicken at noon, ribs at 12;30, one o’clock pork and 1:30 brisket. So we’ll be really busy.”

Swardson says he met Gary and Sabrina “along the barbecue trail.”

“I started out judging barbecue for about six or seven years, and I decided to start competing at contests.”

Does he beat the guys he used to judge? Swardson smirks: “Yeah, sometimes.”

Drug and weapons bust made in Livingston County

police lights featureThe Livingston County Sheriff’s Department said a traffic stop led to a drug bust Thursday afternoon on 36 Highway.

The department said around 4 p.m. Deputy Ryan Ford was on U.S. 36 near Mooresville when he clocked a vehicle going 84 in a 65 and pulled over the vehicle with Indiana plates.

“Probable cause was developed to look further into the car stop and upon doing so the deputy recovered marijuana, 2 loaded handguns, ammunition, and $5,702 in cash which were seized,” said Sheriff Steve Cox.

A 33-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman both of Indiana were arrested for alleged misdemeanor drug violations.

The sheriff’s department said the weapons investigation is being transferred to the NITRO Federal Task Force for additional investigation and considerations by the U.S. Attorney due to information obtained.

Both individuals arrested have since posted bond and are scheduled to appear in Livingston County Court on Monday.

HENRY LEE HENDERSON
1948 -2016

Henderson, Henry. obitphoto (1)It was Solomon who penned, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity in this life: a time to be born and a time to die…”
On Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at approximately 12 Midnight, God chose to inject the temporary pause into the life of Henry Lee Henderson; a life that began on January, 21, 1948. He was born to Warren Henderson and Ethel Miller in the quiet town of Pittsburg, Kansas but was raised by his grandmother, Eura Henderson in Iola, Kansas.
Henry received his formal education at Iola public school and Allen County Community College, and for the next four decades, with the same company, he would be characterized by his strong work ethic and commitment to service. He was an active member of the Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church, and for over 20 years, Henry diligently served as a deacon, church board member, school board member, and immersed himself in the church’s youth ministry department. Henry’s life of service extended beyond the boundaries of St. Joseph, and in 2006, he was part of a dynamic team of volunteers in Hyderbad, India participating in health seminars, evangelism, clothing and food distribution.
On July 3, 2004, Henry began a new dimension in his life, when he married Annette Darlington. He was a wonderful husband and father to his children, whom he loved unconditionally. He made time to attend their sporting events and took special interest in what was important to them. Henry stressed academic excellence, and invested much of his time coaching his own children, grandchildren, and volunteering his time to help youth in the community play soccer, baseball and track. Also, competition was important to him; he was a keen sportsman, and won numerous awards for his athletic abilities. His hobbies include but are not limited to traveling, camping and fishing. In spite of his busy schedule Henry found time to “dabble” in technology.
On his life journey, Henry was a loving, generous, compassionate, thoughtful and loyal person. He loved people! His legacy was to serve and extend a helping hand to those who were in need.
On Wednesday May 4, 2016, Henry went to sleep quietly in Jesus to await the resurrection morning. He is survived by his beloved wife, Annette Henderson; his children, LaRon Henderson (Heather), Omaha , Nebraska, Janelle Trinkle (Paul), Leavenworth, Kansas, Mika and Mikeal Henderson, St. Joseph, Missouri, TeFeris Henderson, Kansas City, Missouri and Heather Henderson, St. Joseph, Missouri; Grandchildren, Noni, Justus, Jada, Mia, Miles, Amonttay, Ka’Miyah and Xion Henderson; Sisters, Diane, Deidre, Toni and Terri Lee, Cheryl Thompson, and Shirley Vaughn; Brothers, Warren Henderson, Jr. and Emery Lee; Uncles, Frank Williams, Jr. and Russell Henderson; Aunts, Patricia Pulley and JoAnn Hunter; and a host of nephews, nieces, in laws and friends.
Henry will be sorely missed by his immediate family, his church family, friends and the numerous lives he has touched on this journey.
The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Celebration of a “life well-lived” of the late Henry Lee Henderson will be held at the Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church on Saturday at 2:30 P.M. The Internment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery 5005 Frederick Avenue, St. Joseph, MO 64506.
