Storm reports: record rainfall in St Joe, KCI, and hail the size of grapefruit in northern Kansas

The weather channel posted video of hail falling in Edgerton, Mo Tuesday
The weather channel posted video of hail falling in Edgerton, Mo Tuesday

Overnight storms in our area did not measure up to Tuesday morning’s weather, which washed out roads, took down trees, power poles and power lines, and caused power outages throughout the area. But we did get a lot more rain, and that was causing some problems Wednesday morning. The area was placed under a flash flood watch and a flood warning until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Officials say you should avoid the Route-P near the Buchanan/Dekalb County line because of high water. That alert was sent via the Nixle warning service at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Rainfall records were set in St Joseph and at Kansas City International Airport on Tuesday. The National Weather Service reported 3.65 inches of rain at KCI, and the official reading in St Joseph was 3.05 inches. Both totals broke the previous records set on yesterday’s date in 2009.

The National Weather Service reported hail the size of tennis balls in south-central Nebraska near the town of Deshler Tuesday night. In north-central Kansas, meteorologists say hail the size of grapefruits damaged roofs and broke car windows in the community of Bremen in Marshall County.

Unofficial reports from the region listed a lot of hail and high winds overnight. A few trees were blown over near Parker, Kansas and a shed was blown over in Linn Valley, Kansas. Several communities were left without power after a substation may have gone offline.

Floodwaters briefly closed Route-9 near Parkville in Platte County. 9 Hwy north of Coffey Road to 8500 Block is now open as water has receded.

In Cass County, Missouri, a spotter reported hail the size of golf balls northwest of Cleveland, Missouri.

Hail the size of quarters was reported in Johnson County, Kansas near Shawnee.

Law enforcement reported water over the roadway in Basehor, Kansas.

Quarter-sized hail was reported west of Paola in Miami County, Kansas.

Hail the size of dimes fell in Olathe, Kansas.

Complaint: driver in crash at 28th & Patee had four prior DWI convictions and eight active license revocations

wpid-wpid-sjpd-patch1.jpgA 40-year-old St Joseph man with four prior convictions for drunk driving is charged with D.W.I. and driving with a revoked license in connection with a crash April 17 at 28th and Patee in St Joseph.

Police say while at the hospital after the crash, Jotham Hamlin admitted “drinking enough whiskey to pass out.”

In the formal probable cause statement, St. Joseph Police Officer Scott Gary said Mr. Hamlin had bloodshot, glassy eyes and slurred speech at the time. Officer Gary also said the defendant had eight active revocations of his driver’s license.

The complaint notes two convictions for D.W.I. on November 3, 2004 for events in January and September of that year. The complaint also lists convictions for D.W.I. in March of 2002 and October of 1999.

St. Joseph police say Hamlin was driving a stolen Ford F-150 well above the posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour just prior to hitting a parked vehicle. The truck then hit another vehicle in oncoming traffic, before the truck overturned and hit a tree with the undercarriage of the truck.

The driver of the other vehicle, James Walker, was treated and released at Mosaic Life Care. Bail has not been set and no court hearings have been scheduled. Mr. Hamlin remains hospitalized for serious injuries he sustained in the crash.

SJSD news conference planned “to update the media on important topics regarding the district”

Dr. Dan Colgan
Dr. Dan Colgan
The St. Joseph School District has announced a news conference Tuesday afternoon to update the media “on important topics regarding the district.”

One of those topics may be the new revelations regarding former Superintendent Dr. Dan Colgan’s retirement income.

Dr. Dan Colgan has been under investigation by, among others, the Missouri Public School Retirement System. KQTV-2 reported that Dr. Colgan must repay hundreds of thousands of dollars he’s received during his retirement over the last ten years.

The television station reported that Dr. Colgan used non-allowable items to calculate his salary and thus his pension payments. Among those were an annuity, a mileage and car allowance, health insurance and other non-allowable items. They reported about $660,000 that Colgan reportedly must pay back, and that these funds would come out of future pension payments.

Officials have said the exact amount of the repayment was not available Monday night.

Severe weather causes power outages and prompts emergency responses

Weather radar 160426 0745Severe weather ripped across our region Tuesday morning, with more storm activity expected today and tonight.

We have numerous reports of the aftereffects of Tuesday morning’s storms:

Online power outage resources from KCP&L have been fluctuating, but just before 10 a.m., the utility’s outage map showed more than 750 customers in St. Joseph without electrical power. Those numbers have changed with each new report of downed power poles or trees taking down power lines.

At U.S. Highway 59 near SW Contrary Creek Road (13531 SW US 59) there were power line arcs and a possible tree fire smoldering. Crews were dispatched shortly after 9 a.m.

One power line was down and another was about to fall with electrical arcs noted in the 200 block of East Dolman Street.

In Union Star, Missouri, at the crossing of US. Highway 169 and Missouri Highway 31, there was a lot of water on the roadway. It was described just before 8 a.m. as about a 25 yard stretch of road where the water was five inches deep or more.

Near Rushville, there were at least two power poles leaning, with guy lines and power lines down on Old Highway 116. Emergency responders in the area also reported a stretch of road along Mud Lake road that was completely washed out and impassable. Power lines were down and poles were leaning in the 15700 block of SW Old Highway Road.

Severe weather blew down some power lines which blocked the roadway along the 10700 block of SE Highway A. That highway has since reopened.

Just before 8am, officials responded to a traffic crash involving several vehicles during the storm in St Joseph. The wreck, which involved multiple vehicles, was reported just south of exit 50 along I-29 in the southbound lanes.

Det. Kathryn Ford with the police dept. said they still have not identified the driver or owner of the vehicle described as a 2014/15 GMC Sierra, Silver 4-door short bed.

Previously, police said they are trying to identify a man who allegedly used red and blue lights to pull a woman over a woman on April 16.

The dept. said a woman reported she was stopped by a man in a truck with red and blue lights under the grill. The stop took place on 169 Hwy, south of DD Hwy (Main St.).

The woman was confronted by a white man described to be around 50 to 60 years of age, medium built with salt & pepper hair and a full beard that was neatly trimmed.
