Amtrak welcomes cats and dogs on River Runner

AMTRAK logoYou can now bring your small dog or cat along with you as you ride on Amtrak’s River Runner train service between Kansas City and St. Louis.

In a news release, Amtrak announced it is expanding its program allowing customers to travel with their pets. Now these small cats and dogs in carriers can join their owners on the Missouri River Runner Service.

They’re also allowing small pets in carriers on the Blue Water, Wolverine Service, Pere Marquette and Hiawatha Service trains. Pet reservations will be accepted Monday, April 25, for travel beginning Monday, May 2, on these state-supported routes in Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin.

“We have listened to our passengers looking for other transportation options while traveling with their pets,” said Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman. “We are pleased to work with our state partners to expand this program.”

More than 6,300 pets have traveled with their human companions around the country since the program launched in 2014 as a pilot in Illinois (permanent since April 2015) and expanded to the busy Northeast Corridor in last October.

“Customers want the ability to take trips with their pets, and we are thrilled to now provide this service across Missouri,” said Michelle Teel, Missouri Department of Transportation Multimodal Operations Director.

Dogs and cats must meet the following requirements:

The maximum weight of pet including the carrier is limited to 20 pounds
Owners can reserve a space for their pet for a $25 fee; limit one pet per passenger
For the safety and comfort of all passengers, pets must remain in a carrier at all times and carriers must remain under the seat of that passenger.
All five pet reservations are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis

Amtrak continues to welcome service animals on board at no charge. For more information about the Amtrak pet policy or to purchase tickets, visit Amtrak.com

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said it plans to hold special alcohol enforcement operations in Buchanan and Caldwell counties sometime next month.

Sometime during the month of May, Troop H said it will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Caldwell County and a DWI saturation in Buchanan County. The areas selected for enforcement are based on a high number of drinking-related crashes, high number of contacts with drivers who have been drinking, and officers’ input as to probable contact with DWI violators.

“The Missouri State Highway Patrol is dedicated to removing impaired drivers from Missouri roadways,” said Capt. James E. McDonald, commanding officer of Troop H. “Anytime your plans include alcohol, please have a sober designated driver.”
