(UPDATE) Investigator: speed, alcohol, stolen vehicle may have been involved in Midtown crash Sunday

Investigators were expected to confer with prosecutors Monday afternoon or Tuesday on possible charges stemming from a rollover crash Sunday evening at 28th and Patee.

Sergeant Chris McBane of the St Joseph Police Department says his team’s investigation continues.

The Traffic Unit is investigating the possibility that excessive speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash, and that the vehicle may have been reported stolen shortly before the 7:30 p.m. crash. Witnesses said the white truck driven by one of the motorists went airborne crossing over a hill near the crash site. The motorist sideswiped one parked car and then hit another vehicle nearly head on.

Police had to move witnesses from the immediate area of the crash for fear that some leaking gasoline might ignite.

Sgt. McBane would not release the name of that driver, who he said was admitted to Mosaic Life Care in serious condition. As we reported earlier, the truck crashed into a tree and the driver was ejected through the windshield. He has not been arrested, McBane said.

“Speed is definitely a factor in this, and we’re still looking into the whether alcohol played any factor or not,” McBane said in an interview.  “He sideswiped a parked vehicle and then hit the other car off-center but nearly head on.”

The other motorist was treated for minor injuries at Mosaic Life Care and released.

McBane says the investigation continues. He said they’re awaiting results from blood-alcohol tests and possible confirmation that the vehicle was reported stolen. His accident reconstruction team is also working on determining how fast the vehicle was driving at the time of the crash.

Two young children were injured and two adults were arrested after a high-speed police pursuit Saturday night came to an unusual conclusion.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the driver was fleeing from law enforcement, even after his front tires were deflated during the pursuit. The crash report says Willie Morin deliberately drove the disabled SUV off the highway along Route-A north of Evona at about 11 p.m. Saturday April 16.

According to the crash report, he then jumped out of the moving vehicle. The Ford Explorer hit an embankment and overturned.

Mr. Morin was arrested, as was his adult passenger, identified as Lacie Bever. The crash report lists Ms Bever, 32, and two other young children, ages six and nine, as residents of Worth, Missouri. All three were taken to Northwest Medical Center with what were described as minor injuries.

Mr. Morin and Ms Bever were taken to the Harrison County Law Enforcement Center. The Prosecuting Attorney in Gentry County has filed new charges against Mr Morin. Mr. Morin remains in custody in Harrison County where the booking officer says a judge set bail at $30,000. The charges are operating a vehicle without a valid license, resisting arrest by fleeing, three counts of child endangerment, and leaving the scene of an accident. All are felonies. An earlier version of this story did not include all the charges, some of which were filed later. The booking officer in Harrison County refused to release Mr. Morin’s booking photograph. Shown here is a photograph of the defendant dating back to 2013.

Prosecutors also filed charges against Ms Bever, including two counts of child endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.

Both defendants are due in court for a first appearance on Wednesday, April 20, at 9 a.m. before Gentry County Judge Edward M. Manring.

Career Fair to be held in St. Joseph Tuesday

resource fair 2016Hundreds of job seekers are anticipated to turn out Tuesday for the largest career fair in northwest Missouri.

The 12th annual Career & Resource fair will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 at the Civic Arena in downtown St. Joseph.

The event is free and open to the public.

Nshan Erganian with the St. Joseph Employment Coalition said 78 employers, 10 schools and 15 social service agencies are anticipated to take part in this year’s event.

All employers are looking for candidates to fill job openings.

“You actually get to talk to a person and make a first impression,” Erganian said. “You may still have to go back and file an online application…but it’s definitely a way to get an individual noticed.”

Job seekers are urged to bring multiple copies of their resume to hand out and to dress for success.

Erganian said there will be a variety of businesses looking for candidates at the fair.

“Every major manufacturer or just about every one in the St. Joseph area.  Heavy presence of healthcare, there’s a real shortage of nurse aids and home health aids, a lot of telesales and telemarketing, customer service and then it really runs everything from insurance companies to media and retail,” Erganian said. “There’s really something there for everybody.”
