A 27-year-old man has been charged after allegedly crashing two stolen vehicles in St. Joseph.

Andrew Justice is charged in Buchanan County with a felony for tampering with a motor vehicle.

According to court documents, on two occasions Justice has wrecked stolen vehicles.  Justice was arrested Tuesday at a crash involving a stolen pickup.

However, the tampering charge stems from an incident that took place Jan. 18 when a Toyota Tundra was stolen from a victim in the 800 block of S. 16th.

“The vehicle was found wrecked and abandoned several hours later at 2902 N. 12th,” said Det. Chase Cotter with SJPD. “Approx. 30 minutes after the accident, according to a witness statement, the defendant was at 1525 St. Joseph Ave. where he asked for a ride due to wrecking a truck at Highland Meadows after running from the police.”

Justice allegedly told detectives when he was arrested at the scene Tuesday that he had just gotten back into town.

“He was arrested on 4/12/16 in another stolen pickup truck, where he wrecked into 3 parked cars after fleeing police,” Cotter said. “He is a suspect in an armed robbery and a receiving stolen property case from less than a week ago.”

Cotter said Justice has no job, residence or ties to St. Joseph.

Bail for Justice has been denied.  He’s scheduled for an arraignment Friday.

A woman has been arrested in northwest Missouri on a warrant after authorities allegedly caught her driving a stolen pickup due to a tip from a relative of the vehicle’s owner.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were dispatched Wednesday to the southern part of the county to a report of a stolen pickup. The office said a relative of the vehicle owner was following a female who was driving the alleged stolen vehicle and they were headed for Carroll County.

The Carroll County Sheriff and MSHP were able to stop the reported stolen pickup in Carroll County near the Tina junction. The female driver allegedly provided those law enforcement officers with a specific name and personal identifiers. That person was subsequently arrested by Carroll County authorities for alleged Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While Revoked. The suspect was then turned over to Livingston County Sheriff’s Office and extradited back to the LCSO.

The LCSO said it learned at the scene the suspect allegedly has a completely different real name from what had been provided to Carroll County authorities. A LCSO deputy then attempted to print the female on its Live Scan digital finger print instrument and quickly received information back of yet another name for the woman. That individual was found to be Brenda K. Parkhurst, 51 and wanted in Macon County for alleged felony Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Revoked, Identity Theft, and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle with a $20,000 cash bond.

LCSO has received an arrest warrant for Brenda K. Parkhurst, 51, for alleged Tampering with a Motor Vehicle and the court has requested a $25,000 cash bond.

Parkhurst has most recently been residing in Chillicothe. At this time Ms. Parkhurst remains at the Daviess Dekalb County Regional Jail in lieu of bond.

Authorities have confirmed an older woman was killed in a crash on I-29 near Platte City that shut down the roadway for several hours.

The road has since re-opened to traffic.

St. Joseph Post’s Rob Horning said the Missouri State Highway Patrol is reporting the woman turned heading south on exit 19 out of Platte City, taking the wrong exit ramp.

“If you take that exit it goes right onto southbound traffic, she was heading north on the southbound exit and she went right onto I-29 and ran into two semi-trucks that were side-by-side.  There was nowhere for them to go, they ran right into her,” Horning reported.

Two other individuals were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Both lanes of the highway were shutdown from around 12:30 p.m. until just before 3:30 p.m.

Sgt. Jake Angle with the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the highway was backed up from the 19 mile marker to the 26 mile marker, just past Camden Point.

“No gun was ever displayed. Nobody was ever threatened with a gun, and it would be our indication that there never was a gun involved.”

SJPD Police - FeatureSome exaggerated reports from the public may have created unnecessary panic in St Joe Thursday morning. But police and school officials took no chances, and kept students at one elementary school inside.

Commander Eric Protzman says officers were dispatched to the area near the Burger King restaurant on St Joseph Avenue and Highland shortly after 7 a.m. to the report of a juvenile with a gun in the area. Early indications were that the young runaway had fled west on foot in the general direction of Lindbergh School.

But Commander Protzman tells us there was no gun. “Officers were dispatched up there, there was a report of a gun, there was no confirmation that there ever was a gun,” Commander Protzman said. “The runaway was taken into custody.

“No gun was ever displayed. Nobody was ever threatened with a gun, and it would be our indication that there never was a gun involved.”

Protzman says early reports from the public may have been intended to bring police to the scene faster.

“Unfotunately sometimes people will call us with different information to try to expedite a police response, which is not always good. It creates panic throughout the community.”

Based on the earlier, exaggerated reports, officers made contact with officials at Lindbergh Elementary, who agreed to keep students inside. Commander Protzman says they’ve been given the “all clear.”

In a statement, St. Joseph School District spokeswoman Joey Austin also downplayed the situation.

“Police officers are responding to an incident in the vicinity of Lindbergh school. There is no threat to the school or the students, however as a precautionary measure students have been brought inside.”
