ATV crash sends Gower teen to the hospital

MSHP logoA teen from Gower suffered moderate injuries in an ATV crash at a private racetrack in Cosby Saturday evening.

According to the crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 17-year-old Taylor Allison was driving at the Knobby Hill MX Park at 19318 Route W near Cosby shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Investigators say he drove up a steep embankment and his Suzuki QuadRacer went airborne.

Mr Allison was ejected and hit the ground. He was taken to Mosaic Life Care for treatment.

UPDATE – Alarms never sounded during Kmart break-in

(UPDATE) – Alarms were never triggered during an early morning K-Mart break-in according to the St. Joseph Police Department.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said officers responded at 3:55 a.m. Monday to the store located at 2901 North Belt to a report of a break-in after an employee reported a window broken out on the front.

“We conducted a search and we set of the motion sensor but never received an alarm prior to that,” Wilson said.

Sergeant James Tonn said the perpetrators left behind several damaged displays and a lot of broken glass.

Wilson said an unknown amount of jewelry was taken during the break-in.

Investigators are looking at several pieces of evidence as well as the store’s surveillance video.   Wilson said they are still trying to access the surveillance footage at this time.  There have been no arrests.

Restorative Justice Speaker coming to Western

St. Joseph, Mo. —Dr. David Karp, professor of sociology and director of the Project on Restorative Justice at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, will present a lecture at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Enright Community Rooms, Spratt Hall rooms 214-216. The talk, “Restorative Justice on the University Campus: Repairing Harm and Building Community,” is free and open to the public.

Dr. Karp’s scholarship focuses on restorative justice in community and campus settings and on prison programs preparing inmates for return to the community. He was the recipient of the 2010 Donald D. Gehring Award from the Association for Student Conduct Administration for his work on campus restorative justice. Dr. Karp has published more than 100 academic papers and six books, and is on the Advisory Council for the National Association for Community and Restorative Justice and the Board of Directors for the New York State Dispute Resolution Association.

Dr. Karp’s appearance at Missouri Western is sponsored by the Peace and Conflict Studies program, the Center for Multicultural Education and the Missouri Western State University Foundation.

Livingston County to offer Basic Law Enforcement Academy

Livingston County Sheriff's Office PatchThe Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is giving nearby residents a chance to earn a career in law enforcement without having to travel long distance.

The office said it’s partnering again with the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association (MSA) and Training Academy to offer a 2nd Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy in Livingston County. The Police Academy will be a part-time academy which means it will be spread out over about 10 months and is tentatively scheduled to begin August 02, 2016 and graduate June 08, 2017.

Certified law enforcement officers from Livingston County and surrounding areas in addition to prosecuting attorney(s) and juvenile officer(s) will be conducting the course instruction for the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Training Academy. LCSO Chief Deputy Michael Claypole will again be the site coordinator and an instructor for the MSA Training Academy.

“This is a great opportunity to attend a Law Enforcement Academy without traveling long distances and without committing to a full time class 5 days per week,” said Sheriff Steve Cox.

Heartland Foundations to offer $50,000 in Healthy Partnership grants

heartland foundation logo2The Heartland Foundation plans to offer around $50,000 in grants through the 2016 Healthy Partnership grant cycle in Northwest Missouri.

The Heartland Foundation along with North Kansas City Hospital and Mosaic Life Care have announced the opening of their 2016 Healthy Partnerships grant cycle.

Proposals for these matching grant funds must be submitted by two or more organizations partnering to propose new solutions that address opportunities for promoting healthy eating and active living in their communities. This year, approximately $50,000 is available to award to
selected grantees. Grants of up to $25,000 are possible; however, average awards are in the range of $5,000 to $10,000. Projects must exhibit creative thinking and may be focused on one community or serve several neighboring communities throughout the region.

The Healthy Partnerships program was created in 1990 to offer matching grants to collaborative groups testing innovative programs to impact their communities’ health. The program continues to encourage and fund innovative outcomes-based, collaborative initiatives to benefit the 19-county northwest Missouri region.

Godspell auditions to be held at Western

Godspell Featured ImageSt. Joseph, Mo. —The Department of Theatre, Cinema and Dance at Missouri Western State University are holding open auditions for the upcoming production of “Godspell” at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21 in the Potter Hall Theater. Callbacks will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22. Sign up for auditions online at www.missouriwestern.edu/theatrecinema/auditions/.

Missouri Western music and theatre, cinema and dance students are required to prepare 16 to 32 bars of a contemporary Broadway or pop/rock song in the style of the show and a contemporary monologue. The time limit is 60 seconds for a song or monologue only, or 90 seconds of monologue and song.

Community members and non-majors are also encouraged to audition. They have the option to bring in a prepared piece as mentioned above, or a selection of pieces will be available from the show to sing with the accompanist.

“Godspell” is an ensemble show. Callbacks will consist of looking for a group of people who can work closely together to tell a story rather than looking at individual performances.

Dance callbacks will be immediately following the singing/monologue audition, with a brief time provided to change clothes. Be prepared to stay at the auditions for at least one hour.

“Godspell” will be the final production of the 2015-2016 Missouri Western Theatre Season. It will be staged April 8-16.

Suspect arrested after stabbing in St. Joseph

SJPD patchA 61-year-old man has been taken into custody after a stabbing Thursday night in St. Joseph.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said a 38-year-old man was reported to have been stabbed Thursday evening in the 700 block of Locust. The man was taken with a serious but not life threatening injury to Mosaic Life Care for treatment.

Wilson said the suspect was located in the area and arrested. Detectives are continuing to investigate.

Man injured after run-in with Deer in Clinton County

wpid-mshp-logo111.jpgA Lathrop man received moderate injuries Friday morning after he hit a deer.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Caleb Mitchell, 23 was driving a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse around 5:50 a.m. while traveling westbound on 240th St. about 6 miles east of Lathrop.  That’s when his vehicle hit a deer in the roadway and went off the north side of the road and hit a ditch.  Mitchell was taken by private vehicle to Liberty Hospital.
