February checkpoints planned in Platte

Feature - saturation, drunk driving, dwiThe Platte County Sheriff’s Office says it could be holding sobriety and/or safety checkpoints throughout the month of February.

Sheriff Mark Owen said if a driver encounters a DWI Checkpoint the delay will be brief. If a driver is suspected of being intoxicated, he/she will be asked to complete the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Any driver found to be impaired will be arrested and transported to the Platte County Detention Center. He said motorists should also keep in mind that if they encounter a safety checkpoint, the safety check will also only be for a brief time.

“We appreciate the cooperation from the public as we conduct DWI Checkpoints and take drunk drivers off our roads. We also appreciate the public’s patience when they enter a safety checkpoint, knowing that the overall goal of any checkpoint is to keep innocent motorists safe. Providing a safe and secure environment for the citizens of Platte County is one of the reasons we conduct both of these checkpoints,” Sheriff Owen said.

(Missourinet) – The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that angler Shane Doherty of Fort Scott, KS, set the first fishing state-record of 2016 by catching a 2-pound-2-ounce gizzard shad measuring 19 and 13/16 inches.

Doherty caught the fish by pole and line on Jan. I at a private strip pit in Vernon County. The previous pole-and-line record for gizzard shad was 1-pound, 14 ounces set in 2015.

The gizzard shad travels in large, constantly moving schools near the water’s surface and frequently leaps clear of the water or skips along the surface on its side, earning it the common name “skipjack.”

Missouri’s State Record Fish program recognizes an angler’s top achievement, catching the biggest fish of that species in state history. Anglers who have fish that meet that criteria are awarded a plaque and will be entered onto the state-record fishing list.

Deer disease turns up in east-central Nebraska

deerLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Wildlife officials say a fatal deer affliction has spread eastward in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says testing done on deer killed by hunters in November in Boone and Nance counties, located in east-central Nebraska, came back positive for the disease.

The commission says the last testing of deer from that area was in 2008, which turned up no positive results.

Chronic wasting disease affects deer and elk and is always fatal. No human cases have ever been recorded.

The disease was first discovered in Nebraska in 2000 in Kimball County. Since 1997, the state has tested nearly 49,000 deer, with 292 testing positive. The disease has been found in 30 Nebraska counties, but state officials say it has not hurt Nebraska’s deer population.

Kristopher Koebel

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 32-year-old man who wanted to take a Lincoln police cruiser for a joyride has been sentenced for burglary and other crimes.

At a Thursday hearing Kristopher Koebel was given five to seven years in prison.

Police say Koebel broke into a vehicle business on June 12th and stole a car and soon broke into a store.

Then he was spotted inside a cruiser parked outside a police substation. Police say he asked an off-duty sergeant for the cruiser’s key and then raced away in the other car when the officer refused to provide the cruiser’s key.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Koebel later told officers he wanted to steal the cruiser “and have fun driving it around.”

InterServ investigation leads to employee termination but no criminal wrongdoing found

The results of an InterServ investigation that began last month after a social media post indicated the possibility of misconduct allegations has been completed with no wrongdoing found.

In a statement released Thursday, InterServ said it filed a police report related to what had been identified as unauthorized credit charges a number of months ago. Following an evaluation of some new information that was later released on social media the agency decided that an independent third party should review the circumstances.

“This separate review found no indication InterServ was missing any funds or that money was unaccounted for, and there was no indication of criminal wrongdoing,” the statement said.

However, InterServ said the separate review did speak to some other concerns which resulted in the release of an employee.

“Dennis Snethen remains an employee here,” the statement said. “There is no evidence of any job related or other concerns with Mr. Snethen’s work for InterServ.”
