Kansas woman killed, three kids hurt in crash in Nemaha County

KHPA Wetmore, Kansas woman was killed and three young children were injured in a broadside crash with a semi in Nemaha County, Kansas Thursday morning.

A crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol indicates 37-year-old Rebecca Lynne Crismas failed to yield at a stop sign on West Road at US-36 highway south of Sabetha.

A tractor-trailer on the highway crashed into the woman’s van just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

Three children, ages 11, three and one, along with the driver of the semi, were transported to area hospitals.

Services scheduled for longtime Hiawatha officer

Services are scheduled on Monday for a longtime Hiawatha, Kansas police officer who died unexpectedly Wednesday.

Officer Michael Thompson was with the Hiawatha department for nearly 40 years. A celebration of life service is planned Monday morning at 10:30 at the Fisher Community Center in Hiawatha.

According to the chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Officer Thompson will be buried at the Mount Olive Cemetery in Troy, with military honors provided courtesy of the Brown County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hiawatha Police Department National Night Out, sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha, 66434.

Savannah running Snow Bus Routes

School Closing Sponsor copy, weather closingThe Savannah R3 school district said it plans to run snow bus routes Thursday and Friday.

The district said the bus routes are in affect for Thursday, Jan. 7th and Friday Jan. 8 for both morning and afternoon. The district said it’s seeing slick road conditions.

A school bus overturned Thursday morning on a county road in Andrew County due to slick conditions. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said no one was injured in the accident.

(Update) Colorado kidnapping suspect arrested in Alabama

(Update) Mr Kitchen has been arrested.  Shortly after noon today, the news was posted to the Facebook page of Longmont Fire, Police and OEM: “The suspect was arrested in Alabama at 10:50. The victim is safe.”

Colorado authorities warned that a kidnapping suspect and his 16-year-old victim may be heading to St Joe.

An official with the Longmont Department of Public Safety says a Longmont teenager was abducted and the suspect may be heading to Missouri with her.  A social media post listed three cities in Missouri that might be the kidnapper’s destination: St Joseph, Darlington and Kingston.

Thomas Ludwig Fechtler, 51, is also known as Thomas Kitchen. He was believed to be driving a light green, 2007 Toyota Rav4 with Missouri plate WH9K2U. The vehicle has rear end damage and expired plates dating back to November 2015.

Fechtler is believed to be traveling with the victim, a 16-year-old girl. The victim was described as white, measuring 5-feet, 3-inches tall and weighing 120 pounds. She has blond hair and blue eyes.

Fechtler is wanted on a felony arrest warrant for sexual assault on a child – position of trust, second-degree kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Accident with meat saw severs hand

Clarks Custom Meat via Google Maps Street View3A 19-year-old employee at Clark’s Custom Meat may have lost his hand in an industrial accident Thursday morning.

Colonel Bill Puett of the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department tells us that Bailey Kerns of Agency, Missouri was injured using a meat saw. A deputy went to the facility at 8411 US 59 shortly before 10 a.m.

“The individual’s hand had been injured, it was already wrapped when our officers arrived,” Puett said. “Our officer did apply a tourniquet to assist until E.M.S. arrived.”

Mr Kerns and his hand were transported to Mosaic Life Care and then transferred to see a specialist at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

School bus accident in Andrew County

wpid-mshp-logo111.jpgWinter road conditions caused a school bus to roll in Andrew County Thursday morning but caused no injuries.

Sgt. Jake Angle with the Missouri State Highway Patrol said an Andrew County School Bus for the Savannah R3 School District was picking up kids around 6:30 a.m. traveling westbound on county road 63 when it crested a hill and come across some slick road conditions, the bus started sliding sideways the wheels caught and it overturned.  Angle said there were three kids on board at the time but no one was injured.

Parents were notified and picked the children up at the scene.

 

Oklahoma rocked by earthquake swarm

The Weather Channel logoThe state of Oklahoma records one of the biggest earthquake swarms in its history.  Analysts say at least 22 quakes were reported in 13 just hours.

According to The Weather Channel, a 4.7-magnitude tremor was followed 30 seconds later by a 4.8-magnitude quake.

Both were centered in a sparsely populated area about 20 miles northwest of Fairview, Oklahoma, about 97 miles northwest of Oklahoma City.  The quakes struck at depths of 2.1 and 3.7 miles below the surface.

The twin earthquakes occurred at 10:27 p.m. CST Wednesday night and were felt from central Kansas to southern Oklahoma and the eastern Texas panhandle, including in Wichita, Kansas, and the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.

Chillicothe man charged with animal abuse

Livingston County Sheriff's Office PatchA 79-year-old man is accused of starving livestock in Livingston County.

William Christison, of Chillicothe is charged with a misdemeanor for Animal Abuse stemming from an incident that took place on Dec. 30.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office an animal abuse/neglect investigation began last week after the Livingston County Humane Society received information regarding a large number of cattle not being fed or watered in the northwest part of the county. The office said it served a search warrant on two properties.

“The Livingston County Humane Society and a neighbor assisted our office with providing adequate hay and water to the livestock. Information was explained to the livestock owner on the ramifications and requirements for these issues and animal,” LCSO said. “Continued monitoring the situation and on January 06, 2016 served a Livingston County arrest warrant on William Christison, 79, Chillicothe for alleged class A misdemeanor Animal Abuse.”

Christison posted $2,500 bond and has been released pending court appearance.

Hiawatha officer passes away

The police department and the broader community in Hiawatha mourn the loss of one of their own.

Police Chief John Defore posted a news release on social media to announce that Officer Michael Thompson has passed away Wednesday morning at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS.

Chief Defore says officer Thompson was as “a fixture” at the Police department since 1978.

“Words don’t seem to convey the true gratitude that we feel in knowing Officer Thompson,” Chief Defore said.

“He will certainly be missed among his police and city family. On behalf of the entire City Commission and all city employees, our sincerest sympathies go out to Officer Thompson’s family.”

Arrangements are pending at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha.
