Hazardous enforcement on I-29 results in tickets and warnings

mshpThe Missouri State Highway Patrol held a hazardous moving operations on Interstate 29 in Atchison and Holt Counties last weekend issuing several tickets and warnings in an effort to promote roadway safety.

The operation was held on Sunday, Oct. 11 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As a result of the project, officers issued 26 citations and 57 warnings.

“Motorists traveling on Missouri’s roadways can expect that members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be striving to keep our roadways safe through strict enforcement,” Capt. McDonald said.”Always pay attention to the task of driving, and please wear your seat belt at all times.”

Suspect in motel standoff charged

Roderick Ellis
Roderick Ellis
A 44-year-old St Joseph man is being held without bail awaiting a first appearance in court next week on charges of kidnapping, domestic assault and armed criminal action. The charges stem from a daylong police standoff at a St Joseph Motel on Wednesday.

Roderick Ellis is accused of taking Rebecca Urban hostage where she worked and forcing her to drive to the Motel Six.

Investigators say he shot her in the arm when she cried for help. He is accused of holding her at gunpoint for about eleven hours until he surrendered at around 7pm Wednesday.

If convicted on the most serious of the charges Mr Ellis could land in prison for life. Domestic Assault in the first degree with serious physical injury is a Class-A Felony, which carries a range of punishment of from 10 to 30 years or life imprisonment.

City Council endorses $16-million proposal to replace downtown parking garage

city of st joseph seal logoThe St. Joseph City Council has endorsed a proposed $16-million project to replace a deficient parking garage in downtown.

According to City Manager Bruce Woody the current garage at 8th and Felix is structurally deficient. Vehicles are not allowed on the top floor due to the deficiency. The proposal would replace it with a brick building that combines parking and retail space.

He said the current garage produces no tax revenue, but the new one would.

“It would immediately from day one also provide a new flow of taxes to the taxing districts including the school district, the city, the county and the smaller taxing districts as well, the museum, the library, things like that,” Woody said.

The location of the garage is within the Tax Increment Financing District approved by the City Council in 2009, so part of the tax revenue would help pay for infrastructure.

Woody said Mosaic Life Care would pay $13-million of the cost, the city would pay $3-million.

150 of the 300 parking spaces would be dedicated to Mosaic employees in the renovated German-American building one block away.

A council work session gave the project a 9-0 endorsement this week.

“Just about everybody that you can think of that wears a badge pitched in “

‏@MoDOT_KC I-29 was closed due to the police emergency.
Captain Jeff Wilson says there were a lot of law officers and agencies involved in the response at the Motel Six Wednesday.

“Just about everybody that you can think of that wears a badge pitched in yesterday to help us handle that situation,” he said.

Officers from the St Joseph Police Department were joined by Buchanan County Sheriff’s deputies, members of the Special Response Team and Drug Strike Force, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and officers.

There was at least one team from The St Joseph Fire Department, three Buchanan County ambulances, members of the bomb squad and an agent with the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Wilson says a lot of safety considerations were deliberated during the eleven-hour ordeal. First and foremost was the safety of a woman being held hostage after she was shot in the arm.

“We have responsibility to do everything in our power to protect that hostage, that shooting victim,” he said.

Rebecca Urban, 41, St Joseph, was transported to the K.U. Medical Center for treatment that Wilson said were serious, but not life-threatening.

“We also in our safety priorities have to consider what we refer to as innocent bystanders, anybody that might be around, as it’s evolving, and try to consider the possibilities of what could happen.”

When you consider the view of I-29 from that second-floor balcony, you realize there would have been a lot of drive-by bystanders.

“The subject was armed. We encountered gunfire. Not knowing what he was fully capable of at the time, and where all those rounds could go, we determined that it was the safe thing to do was to shut down the interstate,” Captain Wilson said.

“The room faced the highway, and not knowing exactly what his firearm was at the time, it was determined ‘better safe than sorry.’ ”

Victim identified in Motel Six standoff

Captain Jeff Wilson of the St Joseph Police Department identified on Thursday the woman held hostage for eleven hours after she was shot in the arm Wednesday. The all-day standoff ended Wednesday evening when the suspect surrendered. Captain Wilson declined to identify the suspect, described as in his 40s.

Captain Wilson did identify the woman held captive during the standoff.

Rebecca Urban, 41, of St. Joseph, was shot in the arm. Ms Urban was transported to the K.U. Medical Center with injuries that were serious, but not believed to be life-threatening.

No criminal charges have been filed in the case, which caused quite a stir in St Joe. An interstate highway and a shopping mall were closed, as were about a dozen adjacent businesses and at least one public school.

Royals Take the Crown! (Listen) Q-Country 92.7 Royals Remix

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Johnny Cueto delivered a masterpiece on his biggest stage yet, pitching eight dominant innings Wednesday night and leading the resilient Kansas City Royals to a 7-2 victory over the Houston Astros and back to the American League Championship Series.

Cueto allowed two hits, a single by Evan Gattis followed by Luis Valbuena’s second-inning homer, before retiring the final 19 batters he faced. He struck out eight without a walk in the kind of clutch performance the Royals expected when they traded for him.

When Wade Davis breezed through the ninth, the Royals poured onto the field to celebrate.

The defending AL champs will host the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 on Friday night. The teams have met once before in the ALCS with the Royals winning in seven games in 1985 — they would go on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals for their only World Series triumph.

“Johnny Cueto was unbelievable,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He knew the magnitude of this game. I think we all did. And he came out from the first pitch and had everything going.”

Still, the Royals trailed 2-1 in the fifth when Alex Rios led yet another comeback with a go-ahead, two-run double. Eric Hosmer and Ben Zobrist also drove in runs, while Kendrys Morales capped the festive night with a three-run homer off Dallas Keuchel in the eighth to put it away.

“The good version of Johnny Cueto is really tough,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “Hats off to him. He pitched a great game. … We didn’t scratch much off him.”

Collin McHugh (1-1), who won the divisional series opener for Houston, allowed three runs in four-plus innings. His bullpen fared little better just two days after it blew a four-run, eighth-inning lead to send the series back to Kauffman Stadium for Game 5.

Kansas City has now won 10 of its last 13 playoff games at home.

The Astros actually seemed poised after their meltdown Sunday, bolting to the lead in front of a charged Kansas City crowd thanks to a rare series of Royals defensive lapses.

With two outs in the second, Gattis sent a slow hopper down the line that third baseman Mike Moustakas fielded cleanly. But with plenty of time, his throw across the infield went wide, and first baseman Eric Hosmer had the ball pop from his glove trying to make a swipe tag.

On the next pitch, Valbuena sent his two-run homer streaking into the Astros bullpen.

It wasn’t until the fourth that Kansas City got a run back, on back-to-back singles by Cain and Hosmer. But by the fifth, the Royals had figured out McHugh’s darting curveball.

Salvador Perez was hit by a pitch, and Alex Gordon hit a ground-rule double to right. Hinch brought in Mike Fiers in relief, and Rios sent a double bouncing down the chalk of the third-base line, scoring two runs and giving the Royals the lead.

Following a sacrifice bunt, Zobrist’s lazy sacrifice fly made it 4-2.

That was plenty of support for Cueto, who was acquired from the Reds for a package of left-handed prospects just before the July 31 trade deadline precisely for moments like this.

Mixing quick-pitch fastballs with hesitation changeups, Cueto made the Astros look foolish most of the night. He jawed with Houston outfielder Carlos Gomez, strutted around like a Wild West gunfighter, and had the unmistakable swagger of an October ace.

After all, Cueto was finally proving that he was one.

His star turn came after going 0-2 in his first four playoff starts, including a forgettable outing in Game 2 against Houston. He allowed four runs in six innings in that game, though Kansas City’s offense and its stingy bullpen ultimately bailed him out.

There was no need for any help this time. Cueto was good enough on his own.

“He didn’t make a bad pitch all night,” Yost said. “He came in after the eighth inning and was lobbying to go back in the ninth. He was unbelievable.”

Major League Baseball bat tricks and other highlights (VIDEO)

The baseball playoffs often generate some outstanding, and strange, highlight videos.

For instance, there was this celebration by some Royals supporters that was NOT safe for kids.

The seventh inning of the Toronto/Texas matchup was a wild affair as well. The Rangers took the lead on this very unusual play, which led to a barrage of garbage tossed onto the field.

They cleaned up the field, but that was all she wrote for Texas. After committing three errors on three plays, Texas gave up this home run, and one of the finest bat flips in playoff history.

Toronto vs Texas from video
Toronto beat the Rangers, and Kansas City beat the Astros. The Royals host the Blue Jays in game one of the American League Championship Series Friday night at Kauffman Stadium.
