Teenage motorist t-bones pickup; other driver dies in fiery crash

KCPD patchKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — An unidentified motorist is killed in a pickup truck that burst into flames after a 16-year-old driving a BMW at a high rate of speed T-boned the vehicle at a Kansas City intersection.

Police spokeswoman Sergeant Deb Randol says the crash was reported shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday on North Oak Trafficway on the north side of town.

Police say the pickup truck was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot when a BMW slammed into it. Randol says witnesses reported the BMW had been traveling at a “high, high rate of speed.”

The Kansas City Star reports the explosion apparently occurred when the gas tank of the pickup truck was hit.

Randol says the 16-year-old boy driving the BMW suffered minor injuries.

Spell of forgetfulness prompts police call

SJPD patchSt Joseph police exercise a special kind of patience when their duties range from the serious to the seriously weird.

Dispatchers sent an officer to a downtown address early Monday after a man reported his female companion had cast a spell on him, making him forget things.

It’s certainly a call that officer won’t soon forget, unless the officer was similarly affected.  Details are sketchy, but that just adds to the mystery.

That call came in shortly before 5 a.m. at Eighth Street and Francis.

We have not heard of any resolution to the paranormal dispatch.

Mixed reviews for rainy weather

Joaquin NWS 151005Rainy weather across the U.S. is getting mixed reviews.

On the east coast, seven weather-related deaths are reported. Officials in Columbia, South Carolina, say the rescue calls are too numerous to count.

Officials say it could take weeks, or even months to assess damage to roads and bridges following days of unprecedented, torrential rain.

First responders in the flood rescue business were expecting another busy day Monday. Police in Columbia say emergency crews will continue carrying out rescue operations in the city and in nearby Richland County. Power outages are affecting thousands and numerous roads and bridges around the state are washed out or under water.

Several schools and colleges, including the University of South Carolina, have canceled classes and some businesses plan to remain shut.

“We are at a 1,000-year level of rain,” Gov. Nikki Haley said at an afternoon news conference. “That’s how big this is.”

Meanwhile, rainfall in southern California is being greeted as good news to that drought-stricken region. Rain totals were expected to range from a half-inch in many areas to up to two inches on the south slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Hurricane Joaquin is weakening as it moves past Bermuda and farther out into the Atlantic. After roaring across parts of the Bahamas as a major Category 4 hurricane, Joaquin lost steam as it headed north. The southeastern Bahamas is where aircraft and ships are searching for a U.S. cargo ship with 33 people aboard. It lost power and communications Thursday when it was caught in the hurricane.

Meierhoffer to offer Grief Recovery Workshop Monday

Meierhoffer Funeral Home & CrematorySaint Joseph, MO — Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory and Crossroads Hospice said it will offer a new Grief Recovery Workshop beginning for families and caregivers on Monday October 5th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

The eight week support group is open to anyone in the community and will be offered on a reoccurring schedule throughout the year.

Meierhoffer said the program creates safety and teaches correct action choices that help people “move beyond” the pain caused by a loss.

“Our first workshop was so well received that it proved the need to offer our community a way to address spiritual, emotional, and relational needs was strong. This is one more way we can help the members of our community heal,” said Scott Meierhoffer, CEO.

The Grief Recovery Program builds on each previous session. Meierhoffer said attendance and commitment are essential so in order to preserve the integrity of the structure, no one will be admitted after the second session.

For more information on the Grief Recovery Workshop, call Jennifer Miller at 816-271-0355.

Flu clinic set for Wednesday in St. Joseph

flu shot needle syringeThe City of St. Joseph Health Department will host its free flu clinic Wednesday.

The department said it’s joining Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Tom Frieden, MD, in encouraging everyone over the age of 6 months to get an influenza vaccination. This year’s vaccine is a closer match for the H3N2 strain associated with worse illness and higher mortality from the 2014-2015 flu season. According to the latest surveillance data, the same H3N2 strain continues to
circulate. Manufacturers have prepared 171 million doses of influenza vaccine, of which 40 million have already been distributed.

The City of St Joseph Health Department will conduct its annual flu clinic on Wednesday, October 7, 2015. The clinic will be held at Green Valley Baptist Church, 3110 Cook Road, St. Joseph, MO 64506. The clinic will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until noon or while supplies last.

This clinic is open to Buchanan County residents aged 18 and older, and who are not pregnant. Those with privately provided health insurance, Medicare or Missouri HealthNet are asked to present their card at the clinic registration. Those with privately provided health insurance should be aware of what their policy covers regarding the flu vaccine.

No services will be provided at the Health Department, 904 S 10th St, on the day of the flu clinic but will resume on Thursday, October 8th. For more information regarding the flu clinic, call 271-4725.

Massasauga Rattlesnake found in Missouri to be listed as threatened species

The eastern massasauga rattlesnake found in parts of Missouri is being proposed to be listed an an endangered species.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to list the rattlesnake under the Endangered Species Act.

Eastern massasaugas are found in scattered locations in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada.

The species, which has been a candidate for listing since 1999, has been declining over the past decades due to loss of its wetland habitat and intentional killing by people who fear the snake. More than 30 percent of the historical populations are now extirpated and many more (20 percent) are of uncertain status. Of those populations that are known to remain, most are experiencing ongoing threats, meaning additional population losses are anticipated in the future.

The proposal is currently open for public comment. For more information CLICK HERE.
