MARYVILLE, Mo. –Northwest Missouri State University is seeing one of the largest freshman classes in its history this fall.

The school attributes the increase in its transfer population and undergraduate headcount according to its preliminary enrollment totals released by the Office of Enrollment Management.

Northwest begins its 2015-2016 academic year with a freshman class of 1,478 students, an increase of 11 percent from last fall. Northwest recorded its largest freshman class, totaling 1,498 students, in 2011.

“The freshman class growth is exceptional and helps offset the largest graduating class in Northwest’s history this past spring and huge numbers last December as well,” Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said, noting those graduating classes of 945 and 542, respectively. “Our enrollment team and so many partners across the institution have taken intentional and strategic steps to ensure this growth and I wish to commend them.”

Additionally, Northwest is projecting increases of nearly 4 percent among transfer students and a little more than 1 percent for its undergraduate student headcount. Northwest’s total headcount stands at 6,415.

The enrollment numbers are preliminary and the University’s official census occurs Monday, Sept. 28.

Shirley Ann (Cochell) Payne, 82, Show Low, Arizona, formerly of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015 with her family in attendance at her home in Show Low, Arizona.
She was born April 17, 1933, in Mercer, Missouri. She lived in, and around, St. Joseph most of her life until moving to Arizona about 20 years ago.
This is not the first obituary written for her. The first was published in 1938, at age 6, after an accidental shotgun discharge to her head. The attending physician put her right eye back in its socket, wrapped up her head, and predicted her to pass by that next morning. That prediction proved to be 76 years premature. She ultimately discovered relief from lifelong head pain in the higher altitudes of Arizon’a White Mountains.
We are all eternally grateful for the honor to have known and loved her. Rest in well-deserved peace Mom.

Troopers in church anger some

Nebraska State PatrolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The new head of the Nebraska State Patrol is defending his proposed outreach program that would encourage on-duty troopers to attend county fairs, public celebrations, sporting events and church services.

Colonel Brad Rice, who has been leading the agency since March, remains committed to the idea of the program even though internal emails obtained by the Omaha World-Herald show that it has been criticized by some.

Capt. Lance Rogers told Rice in an email that the public might not support uniformed troopers attending church while on duty.

Rice says he wants troopers to build relationships with the community.

Rice says the program isn’t intended to let troopers attend their weekly church service with their families while on duty. And church attendance is just one part of the program.

Mom thwarts attempted kidnapping

Lincoln Nebraska police patchLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 33-year-old man has been arrested in the attempted kidnapping of a 3-year-old girl in Lincoln.  The incident happened around 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

The man faces attempted kidnapping charges.

The 40-year-old Aurora, Colorado man was transported to Lake Regional Hospital for treatment. The other occupant, Timothy Greufe of Parker, Colorado, was not hurt.

Head-on crash injures two

MSHP patchTwo people were hospitalized after a crash Saturday night in Agency, Missouri. The crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol says a vehicle driven by Steven Whittaker of Wathena, Kansas crossed the center-line along Route-FF just before 10:30pm Saturday.

His vehicle crashed head-on with a Toyota driven by Tyler Hoffman of St Joseph. Mr Whittaker’s vehicle then overturned.

Mr Hoffman was flown to the KU Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Mr Whittaker was taken to Mosaic LIfe Care with moderate injuries.

Progress report on downtown mural projects (Photo Gallery)

St Joseph now boasts four new murals on the outside of buildings in the downtown area. One depicts the western expansion. One suggests memories of musical moments past. Another depicts a scene from the city’s Civil War history. And the latest appears to show a stroll in the park.

Three of them were begun within the last month and are still in varying degrees of completion. The latest was added to the Joyce Raye Patterson Senior Center with the help of students at Missouri Western.

Here’s our ongoing progress report.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – With dove hunting season opening Sept. 1, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds dove hunters of its more than 180 conservation areas around the state that allow dove hunting, including nearly 100 planted in multiple crop fields that attract the popular game birds. Crops include sunflower, corn, millet, wheat, and buckwheat.

A list of conservation areas that offer dove hunting and maps of areas that have dovefields are available from MDC online at mdc.mo.gov/node/8905.

Weather conditions can impact the quality of field crops so MDC encourages dove hunters to check field conditions ahead of time.

Mourning doves, Eurasian collared doves, and white-winged doves may be taken from Sept. 1 through Nov. 9 from one half hour before sunrise to sunset with a combined daily limit of 15 and a combined possession limit of 45 for all three species.
