Work to interstate ramps delayed due to weather

Construction road MoDotST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Contractors working with the Missouri Department of Transportation had planned to begin working on all on and off ramps on northbound Interstate 29 between 1.5 miles south of Route O in Buchanan County and Business Route 71 in Andrew County this evening at 6 p.m. Weather over the weekend delayed other work and has pushed the ramp portion of the project back to Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Aug. 25-26.

Crews will work at each ramp on northbound I-29 where the ramp meets the interstate mainline beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25. Work will continue on the ramps on the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 26. The contractor will build transitions from the new pavement on the interstate mainline to the ramp surface, working on half of each ramp at a time in order to leave the ramps open to traffic. A 15-foot width restriction will be in place during the work.

All work is planned to begin no earlier than 6 p.m. each evening, after peak travel times, and should be completed each day by 6 a.m. Motorists may experience delays both at the ramp locations and along the mainline, as slow-moving equipment must be transported between each ramp.

Troopers urge caution ahead of Labor Day weekend

mshpTroopers are asking drivers to use caution ahead of Labor Day travel after traffic fatalities jumped up 13 percent last weekend in Missouri.

As of August 17 519 people had died in traffic crashes so far this year in Missouri. That was up 13 percent from the same time last year.

As the Missouri State Highway Patrol prepares for the upcoming Labor Day holiday it’s reminding drivers to use caution.

In 2014, six people were killed and 369 injured in Missouri over the Labor Day holiday in 901 traffic crashes. Of that total, troopers worked 274 traffic crashes, which included 120 injuries and three of the fatalities over the 2014 Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested 94 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend.

The 2015 counting period for the Labor Day holiday will be from 6 p.m., Friday, September 4, through 11:59 p.m., Monday, September 7, 2015.

“The important theme here is: Drivers made errors resulting in traffic crashes. Traffic crashes can be prevented. Fatalities don’t have to happen,” said Colonel J. Bret Johnson. “If your vehicle leaves the right side of the roadway, please follow these important steps: 1) Don’t panic and don’t overcorrect! 2) Ease off the gas pedal and stay off the brake pedal. 3) Turn your wheel about 1/8th of a turn to the left to get back on the road. When the tires hit pavement again, turn the wheel 1/4th of a turn to the right.”

The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) over the Labor Day holiday weekend. All available officers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and alcohol laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.

Troopers throughout the state will participate in a special enforcement operation on September 4 and again on September 7. This operation will include Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 61. Troopers will be targeting all traffic violations, and be especially vigilant of aggressive driving violations.

“The Patrol encourages everyone to have a safe Labor Day holiday,” said Colonel Johnson. “Please buckle up in your vehicle and wear a life jacket on or near water. If you witness criminal activity or experience an emergency—whether you’re on a highway or on the water— call the Patrol’s Emergency Report Line at 1 (800) 525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. If your celebration includes alcohol, designate someone else to drive, whether you are in your boat or your car. Please don’t become a statistic.”

Hattie Davish Mystery set in St. Joseph

unnamed (8)Anna Loan-Wilsey writes the Hattie Davish Mysteries series which is set in various cities in the late 19th century. The series features traveling secretary and dilettante detective Hattie Davish– a private secretary to the late 19th century’s rich and famous. Each book takes place in a different historic town. Her latest book, the fourth in the series, is set in St. Joseph, Missouri, Hattie’s hometown. Praised by Publishers Weekly for her meticulous research and sturdy characters, Loan-Wilsey visited the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau and the St. Joseph Museum as she was writing the book. On Saturday, August 29, Loan-Wilsey will be on hand at the Glore Psychiatric Museum, 3406 Frederick Avenue, to share how she developed the plot using what she discovered in St. Joseph. The book talk/meet & greet will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.

In A Deceptive Homecoming, Hattie returns to her hometown to find it bustling with commerce, electric streetcars, and secrets as she explores some familiar places, including the home of an infamous outlaw, the town cemetery, and the State Lunatic Asylum. During the author’s appearance, Museum visitors can visit the section of the hospital tunnel system that is described in the book.

“I’m grateful to Sarah Elder, curator of collections at the St. Joseph Museums, for her willingness walk me through what is now the Glore Psychiatric Museum, which is part of what was once the State Lunatic Asylum No. 2. Her insights into the history of St. Joseph were invaluable. I also have to thank the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau, especially Mary Supple, for going out of their way to be helpful and welcoming. I left their office loaded with historical research materials, a contact list of experts, and the address for a local tea room. A true Midwestern welcome!” said author Anna Loan-Wilsey.”

The event will be held at the Glore Psychiatric Museum on Saturday, August 29, at 2 p.m. Copies of A Deceptive Homecoming will be available for purchase and the author will autograph them on request until 4 p.m. The presentation is free.
