Judge dismisses indictment in $132 million investment scam

gavel obliqueWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A federal judge has dismissed the indictment against seven men accused in 2012 of cheating investors out of $132 million.

U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten granted on Monday the request from prosecutors to dismiss the case. Its end comes nearly three years after the government announced the indictment.

Prosecutors alleged at the time that investors were bilked with false promises and phony reports about companies that leased drilling rigs and related businesses.

Prosecutors did not explain their decision in the filing, nor respond to email and phone messages seeking comment.

The order dismisses charges that had been filed against Michael McNaul, formerly of Hutchinson; Dale Lucas of Wichita; Russell Kilgariff of Preston; Lloyd Nunns of Hutchinson; Greggory Krause of Hutchinson; Steven Tallman of Owasso, Okla.; and Fredie Hembree of Hutchinson.

City meetings set to explore swimming options and you’re invited

The gutter system around the Hyde Pool is unsound and could collapse

The City of St Joseph is hoping you’ll attend meetings this week to discuss the future of the city’s public swimming facilities. Public Information Officer Mary Robertson says they’ll discuss options and offer tours of all three pools this week.

The first meeting is scheduled Tuesday night at St Peter Lutheran Church, 3524 St Joseph Avenue. Afterward you can tour the pool at Krug Park.

The next meeting will be Wednesday at the Aquatic Park, 402 South Noyes Boulevard, with a tour of the Aquatic Park available afterward. The third and final meeting is Thursday at the Keys Gymnasium at 6001 South Ninth Street, with a tour of the Hyde Park Pool to follow.

All three meetings are scheduled from 6:30 to 8pm.

Extensive repairs are needed at the Hyde Pool. An earlier cost estimate, which may no longer be accurate, pegged the cost of those repairs at between $600,000 and $800,000. That pool is closed this summer for the second year in a row. The city has been unable to open the Krug Pool full time because of a lifeguard shortage. The Krug Pool and the Aquatic Center are in need of some improvements as well.

Ms Robertson says the meetings will provide the public with an overview of the various problems, as well as a closer look at some of the options being explored.

Those include not opening the pools, and replacing them with what are called “spraygrounds.” They’ll show you just what that is and what it would cost. They’re also exploring a possible agreement with Missouri Western State University, which has had issues with its swimming pool as well.

Robertson says that could lead to an indoor community pool on campus.

The search for President Harry Truman, the actor is underway

St. Joseph, Mo. —Missouri Western State University is holding auditions for someone to play the part of former President Harry Truman in an upcoming play.

Western is holding Equity principal auditions and non-Equity auditions in Kansas City Aug. 1 and St. Joseph Aug. 2 for actors to play the part of former President Truman in a new multi-media play titled “Harry and Walter: Missouri’s Native Sons.” The play will premiere on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015 in conjunction with the dedication of the third phase of the Walter Cronkite Memorial on the Missouri Western campus.

“The parallels between Harry Truman and Walter Cronkite fascinate me,” said Dr. Robert Vartabedian, Missouri Western’s president and author of the play. “They were both native Missourians who knew many of the same people; in fact, Cronkite’s father served in Truman’s battalion in World War I. They both rose to national prominence at about the same time, and both were noted for their honesty and integrity. This play gives us a chance to spotlight these famous Missourians while exploring the historic times in which they lived.”

“Harry and Walter” will be the second live multimedia performance associated with the Walter Cronkite Memorial. “Cronkite” premiered last Nov. 4, on what would have been the legendary newsman’s 98th birthday. Noted Kansas City actor Jim Korinke portrays Cronkite as he is interviewed by Larry King one year after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, reflecting not just on that tragedy but on other historic moments he covered during his career. The show has been warmly received by audiences at its public performances, and was entered in the 2015 Pulitzer Prize competition by several scholars and journalists (including Cronkite’s son, Walter Cronkite III) who believed the show deserved broader recognition. Korinke will reprise his role as Cronkite for “Harry and Walter.”

Individuals auditioning for the role of Truman should resemble and be able to recreate the voice of the former president. This is a continuing performance opportunity that occurs on an irregular schedule that coincides with special events and group tours of the Walter Cronkite Memorial. The rehearsal schedule is flexible based on the performers’ schedule. Salary will match AEA/SAG-AFTRA scales for rehearsals and performances.

Auditions must be scheduled in advance online at griff.vn/auditions. Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 1 at Musical Theatre Heritage in Kansas City’s Crown Center, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 in the Kemper Recital Hall, inside Spratt Hall on the Missouri Western campus in St. Joseph. Actors with questions may contact Dr. Bob Willenbrink, founding dean of the School of Fine Arts at Missouri Western, by phone at 816-271-4515 or email atrwillenbrink@missouriwestern.edu.

The premiere of “Harry and Walter” on Nov. 2 will coincide with the dedication of the third phase of the memorial, which includes a replica of the CBS studio from which Cronkite broadcast the CBS Evening News in the 1960s.

Crowdfunding effort underway to buy beleaguered Topeka racetrack

Heartland Park TopekaTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man is hoping an ambitious crowdfunding effort will help him buy a beleaguered Topeka racetrack.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Dan Canady of Holton has started a GoFundMe crowdfunding effort to raise up to $10 million to buy Heartland Park Topeka.

Heartland Park Topeka opened in 1989 and became one of the NHRA’s most popular drag racing venues in the 1990s. After the racetrack’s finances took a turn for the worse in recent years under track operator Raymond Irwin and Jayhawk Racing, the city proposed to buy Heartland Park.

But Topeka’s governing body voted against the plan.

Canady says he’ll use the crowdfunding money to negotiate a deal with Irwin, and if another deal is finalized before he raises the money, he’ll return the money to donors.

Victim’s wife throws crime-solving party
