Anyone with information is asked to contact the Topeka Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

Reinsurance company moving 400 jobs to Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Swiss Re, a reinsurance company, says it plans to move its headquarters and 400 jobs from Overland Park, Kansas, to downtown Kansas City.

The move is expected in late 2018.

President and CEO Eric Smith says the move will bring the company closer to its lead U.S. regulator and provide a more modern workplace.

Wednesday’s announcement came after Gov. Eric Greitens visited Swiss Re’s headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland last week to promote Missouri’s business climate.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development said Swiss Re could access up to $19.8 million in public incentives through the Missouri Works program over the next five years.

Swiss Re is a $33 billion global business that provides insurance for insurance companies.

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say a former Kansas foster parent has been sentenced to more than 25 years in prison for sexually assaulting some of the children in his care.

Forty-eight-year-old Sean Murphy, of Edgerton, was sentenced Wednesday for two counts of child rape and one count of child sexual exploitation. A Johnson County prosecutor’s office spokeswoman says Murphy was working overseas as a contractor when he was arrested in April and entered a no contest plea in June.

Court documents say he recorded two of the victims engaging in sex acts to create child pornography.

The Kansas Department of Children and Families didn’t immediately respond to an email message from The Associated Press. But the agency said earlier that Murphy had passed the required home inspection and a criminal background check.

WEBB CITY, Mo. (AP) – A former high school teacher in southwest Missouri who’s accused of being sexually involved with a student has taken a plea offer just before jury selection was to begin for trial.

The Joplin Globe reports that 33-year-old Carrie L. Njoroge entered an Alford plea on Tuesday in Jasper County Circuit Court. An Alford plea admits no guilt but acknowledges the likelihood of conviction if the matter proceeded to trial.

Njoroge was accused of having sex with a student in her office at Webb City High School in 2014. She was placed on administrative leave when allegations reached school administrators.

The plea agreement allows a suspended imposition of sentence and probation but requires Njoroge to surrender her teaching certificate and register as a sex offender.

Mo. man dies after SUV overturns on I-70 ramp

Private Missouri college creates mandatory patriotism class

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (AP) – An evangelical Christian college in Missouri is now requiring freshman to take a class aimed at encouraging patriotism.

The College of the Ozarks has unveiled a military science class called Patriotic Education and Fitness. The course aims to educate students on modern military customs, U.S. politics and flag protocol. It will also teach rifle marksmanship, map reading and rope knotting.

The college held an event Monday to introduce the new course.

College President Jerry Davis says patriotic education “must be taught, it must be modeled and it must be emphasized.”

The move comes amid a backdrop of some U.S. athletes protesting by taking a knee during the national anthem. The college announced last month that its teams won’t compete against other teams whose players don’t stand for the anthem.

Mo. appeals court extends some protection to LGBT workers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Missouri appeals court says state law allows people to sue for sex discrimination if they believe they were treated unfairly because they didn’t conform to stereotypes of how men and women should act.

Missouri law doesn’t prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. But a Missouri Court of Appeals Western District panel ruled Tuesday discrimination based on sex stereotypes is a legal basis for a sex discrimination lawsuit.

A gay male sued in 2014, claiming he was discriminated against at his state job because he didn’t conform to his bosses’ beliefs about how males should behave. A female co-worker claimed she was discriminated against because she associated with the man.

Tuesday’s ruling says a person’s sexual orientation is not relevant if the discrimination is based on sexual stereotypes.

Ex-staffer: Sexual harassment rampant at Kansas Statehouse

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A former chief of staff to a Democratic legislative leader says sexual harassment is “rampant” at the Kansas Statehouse and that she was once asked for sex by a lawmaker.

Abbie Hodgson said Wednesday that several female college students working as legislative interns also acted as after-hours designated drivers for intoxicated lawmakers last year.

Hodgson was chief of staff in 2015 and part of 2016 for then-Kansas House Minority Leader Tom Burroughs, of Kansas City, Kansas. She said her experiences and conversations with other women showed her that Kansas legislators face no repercussions for sexual harassment.

She declined to name the lawmakers involved in the incidents.

Burroughs did not immediately reply to a phone message seeking comment. Republican leaders say sexual harassment isn’t tolerated and that allegations of it are investigated.
