St Joseph Police To Hold Public Hearing on Grant Money Uses

police carSt Joseph Police want to know what you think they should do with a recently received grant.

The Police Department received nearly $28,000 from a US Justice Department grant that they will share with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department.

Sergeant Larry Stobbs says the department will take public input Friday afternoon.

“We typically only get you know, one or two people show up and were hoping at some point more people show up so we can get more feedback,” Stobbs says.  “That’s why we have the public comment hearing so if there are other concerns citizens have they can say here’s our thoughts on how to spend that money.”

The city is looking to purchase data storage for evidence on electronic devices like cellphones, professional standards software, audio recording software for officers and tasers for the Sheriff’s Department.

The grant fund has declined in the past due to budget cuts.  Stobbs says they used to get near $80,000 each year.  The funding in the past was used for equipment purchases such as tasers or in-car video camera’s.

The public hearing starts at 1:00 Friday afternoon at the Law Enforcement Center, 501 Faroan Street.

graduateThe Kansas Board of Regents has approved tuition increases at public universities that will have some students paying nearly 9 percent more this fall.

The increases approved Wednesday by the board are expected to raise an additional $34 million during the fiscal year beginning in July.

The universities want to boost faculty salaries and pursue other initiatives, but the increases in tuition also would partially offset cuts in state funding enacted by legislators.

Out-of-state graduate students at Pittsburg State University would see the biggest increase at 8.8 percent. The smallest increase, 3 percent, would be for out-of-state veterinary medical students at Kansas State University.

For undergraduates from Kansas, tuition would rise 7 percent at Kansas State and almost 5 percent at the University of Kansas.
