Patriot Coal Bankruptcy Demonstrators Arrrested

police lights(AP) – Twelve demonstrators have been arrested following a protest by mine workers and their supporters in a dispute with St. Louis-based Patriot Coal.

The United Mine Workers of America staged another protest Monday in St. Louis. A spokesman for the union says 12 people were arrested for non-violent civil disobedience.

Patriot wants to make significant changes to health benefits for retired miners and reduce pay and benefits for current miners. The company says the moves are necessary for survival. Union leaders say Patriot was set up to fail when it spun off from St. Louis-based Peabody Energy in 2007, so that benefits could be eliminated. A spokesman for Peabody called that claim a “misguided attempt to rewrite history.”

A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge has given Patriot the go-ahead for its changes.

Northeast Kansas Group Fighting Power Line Developer

powerlinesA group of northeast Kansas residents is working to keep a high-voltage power line system away from their farms.

The so-called Grain Belt Express developed by Clean Line would transmit about 3,500 megawatts of electricity along 600 kilovolt lines from wind farms in southwest Kansas to Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The project still needs state approval.

The group of residents started a petition at Change.org arguing Kansas should keep its wind energy in the state and that Clean Line should be required to bury its power lines.

Clean Line estimates the project will create about 5,000 construction jobs and 500 long-term operations jobs. The company also says exporting wind energy is similar to exporting cattle or wheat and buried lines are more expensive.
