Snowstorm Shuts Down KC Airport

KCI logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Heavy snow has forced the closure of the Kansas City International Airport.

Airport officials announced on Twitter shortly before 10 a.m. that the whiteout conditions had forced the airport to shut down. Earlier, conditions had reduced air traffic to a single runway, and maintenance workers were having trouble seeing each other through the blinding snow.

It wasn’t certain when the airport would reopen and how many flights were affected. Travelers are being urged to check their flights frequently and monitor local media before making the trek to the airport.

Kansas, Missouri Governors, Declare State of Emergency

photo (3)Governors of both Kansas and Missouri have declared a state of emergency for each state due to winter weather.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a State of Emergency for Missouri this morning.  Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas signed an emergency declaration Wednesday.

The weather system has involved a mix of snow, sleet and ice throughout the state, with forecasts of 10 inches or more of snow in some parts of the state and a wintry mix across many other regions of Missouri.

“A severe winter storm continues to bear down on communities across the state,” Gov. Nixon said. “Missouri stands ready to help communities in need and to deploy the resources to keep folks safe. I urge all Missourians to keep a close eye on the weather and avoid unnecessary travel.”

Gov. Brownback said. “Our state agencies are ready to respond as needed to assist Kansans and counties who may need additional assistance,” Brownback said.

Gov. Nixon has also activated the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan, which allows state agencies to coordinate directly with local jurisdictions to provide emergency services.

Citizens who need disaster information, shelter information, and referrals are urged to call 211. The 211 Service is now available for most areas of Missouri.

State officials recommends residents to pay close attention to local media, check road conditions before you go and check on elderly neighbors.

Livingston County Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam

Livingston County Sheriff's Office PatchA voice-mail left for a Livingston County resident has prompted a scam alert.

The caller ID showed the call coming from the Livingston County Sheriff’s office, however Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox announced Tuesday that’s not the case.

The caller had what was described as a Middle Eastern accent and claimed to be Sheriff Cox. The caller told the resident he had an outstanding arrest warrant.

The call did not come from the Sheriffs office and the resident did not have an arrest warrant.

The Sheriff warns of programs that manipulate caller-ID to show any phone number. Sheriff cox says the caller was likely trying to get the individual to send or wire money to take care of the warrant.

Joanie Haynes of St. Joseph said, “It didn’t seem real,” when she checked her Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash ticket at Pacific Quick Stop on the Belt Highway.

The 36-year-old hairdresser won the prize in the February 5th Show Me Cash drawling.

“It was a little overwhelming,” she said, adding that she knew instantly how she’d use the prize money.

“We have three vehicles – mine, my husband’s and a daughter who’s getting ready to move away,” Haynes said. “We’re going to pay her car off, and we’re going to pay off ours.”

She says she had to check the ticket several times just to make sure it was a winner. Then she took it home and locked it up. She was one of two ticket holders who matched all five numbers in the drawling.

Phone Scammer Claims Victim Won Publishers Clearing House Prize

BuchCo Sheriff Badge

A possible phone scam reported in Buchanan County claims the victim won a Publishers Clearing House prize.

The prize allegedly comes from a 2nd place “money back scratchers ticket,” according to Lt Col. Bill Puett with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office.

Puett reported Wednesday the scammers told the victim they had won a $1.2 million prize, but the caller stated they would need a money card from Wal-Mart worth $500 to claim the prize.

The winners were told to call back with the money card number for their package to be shipped.

The scammers called the victim three times asking if the winner had gotten the money card and said the fee would go up if they didn’t act soon.  The victim was a senior citizen and told the caller they could not afford the money card.

The calls came from 876-557-0732. Any similar calls should be reported to law enforcement.
