chart1-jpg chart2-jpg(Update Nov. 8) – The St. Joseph School District issued a correction to the total APR results Tuesday.

Dr. Kendra Lau, Dir. of Assessment for the district said she was made aware Tuesday morning of a change that impacted the total points for the St. Joseph School District’s final APR results.

“During a phone call with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, we were notified that an update had been made to the calculation formula which caused a one-point difference in our overall score. The total points should be 117.5 instead of 118.5,” Lau said.

(Nov. 7) – A state report released Monday show a drop in attendance in the St. Joseph School District.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released its Annual Performance Report (APR), highlighting areas of stability and room for growth in the St. Joseph School District.

The district earned 117.5 points (Corrected) out of 140 points or 84.6 percent of points available.  The APR evaluates school districts on academic achievement, subgroup achievement, college and career readiness, attendance and graduation rate.  The St. Joseph School District earned 48 out of 56 points for academic achievement, 9.5 out of 14 points for subgroup achievement, 25 out of 30 for college and career readiness, 6 out of 10 for attendance, and 30 out of 30 for graduation rate.

Dr. Marlie Williams, Asst. Supt. of Academic and Education Services for the district said attendance dropped during the 2015-16 school year from the year prior.

“Just over 1,700 of our students missed 16 or 17 or more days of the academic year.  That’s really critical for us to get students to school.  It’s a workforce readiness habit.  We want students who are prepared to attend college or attend their jobs regularly, we also know how critical it is that students are in the classroom,” Williams said.

She said college and career readiness also shows room for growth.

“We placed 83.1 percent of the seniors or 570 students in college, the military or the workforce within six months of their graduation in a field that was directly related to what they studied in high school,” Williams said.

Dr. Kenda Lau, Dir. of Assessment for the district said the APR is just one of the reports used to shape goals for the district.

“It’s a piece of the information that we use.  We certainly monitor APR information throughout the year in real time and based on student assessment scores in real time.  So we progress monitor how we’re doing all year long with our APR so at a building level and the district level there is an awareness of how we’re preforming at usual intervals,” Lau said. “It lets us know where we are and where we need to go.”

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Race is down to less than a week and the campaign is back underway as the current sheriff recovers from a heart attack.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office issued a news release Friday stating that while Sheriff Steve Cox remains in the hospital recovering from a heart attack he sustained a week ago he is improving.

“The Sheriff is amazing his doctors and nurses with his speedy recover,” said Chief Deputy Michael Claypole.  “St. Lukes is one of the premier cardiac care facilities in the United States.  The sheriff is responding to doctors, his wife, others and is doing well.  Keep in mind that this happened just one week ago today and Steve will need time to recover.”

Claypole said the sheriff will be returning to work in the near future.

As we previously reported, Eric Menconi who is running as Cox’s opponent in the sheriff’s race announced a day after Cox’s heart attack that his campaign was postponed until a later date.  Menconi posted on Facebook Monday that after it was reported Sheriff Cox showed signs of improvement his campaign activities proceeded.

“I want to thank all supporters on both sides of this election for the overwhelming support with our decision to temporarily postpone the campaign,” Menconi said. “We continue to pray for Sheriff Cox’s recovery and hope to hear from him soon.”

Claypole said anyone wishing to send cards to Sheriff Cox can mail them to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office at 901 Webster St.  Chillicothe, Mo. 64601.

The City of St. Joseph Streets Department has spent the past week gearing up for the first snow fall.

Steve Kendall with the Streets Department said this week workers have been taking part in classroom training and going over equipment ahead of the winter season. Snowplow drivers took part in a snowplow rodeo Thursday at Heritage Park. Kendall said the course was set up to get drivers back in the swing of things before the first snowfall.

“It’s a refresher course for the guys who have been here for a long time and the guys who haven’t ever done it it gives them a feel for what they’re getting into,” Kendall said.  “The little metal pipes we have there you want to get as close to the cones as you can without hitting them and knock the pipes over.”

Kendall said this year around 17 trucks will be out each shift pushing snow and there are around 35 crew members who will be working in shifts.

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold its statewide drill to prepare for the upcoming winter season on Wednesday, Nov. 9. MoDOT said that day drivers may notice increased numbers of MoDOT vehicles on state routes during the drill. In rural areas, crews will deploy after 8 a.m. In urban areas, the drill will not begin until after 9 a.m. The exercise should be completed by 3 p.m.

New website to aid in Doniphan County community awareness

Doniphan County officials have launched a new website in the hope of increasing the county’s online visibility and public awareness of area business and resources.

Adrienne Korson is the Dir. of Economic Development for the county and said the website launched Oct. 7.

“We have completely redesigned the website,” Korson said. “We redesigned it around economic development. Just to offer more of a new image and kick off the branding for the county.  With the website we also designed a new logo for Doniphan County as well.”

Korson said work on the new website began in March and the platform creation began in June.  She said the cost of the project was around $12,000 and included a $6,000 discount from Webcom Resources, the web development company based in Atchison, Kan. Half of the cost came from economic development, the Doniphan County Chamber of Commerce contributed $2,000 and the remaining amount was split between the other county departments.

“We saw that this could be an opportunity not to just list out what’s going on with the government and each department but also to kind of showcase the community.  Kind of give them a voice and create transparency and communication between all the cities and unincorporated areas,” Korson said. “Also to highlight the businesses in the area and really give them a digital presence as well.”

Features include a county news portal, community event calendars, pages for each of the cities, and a county-wide business directory. Korson said around 8,000 people live in Doniphan County.

“It really is a one stop shop for anything that you’re looking for dealing with in the county,” Korson said. “We’re hoping once everyone gets used to it and sees what kind of potential it has that we will be able to keep adding to it. Such as each of the city pages maybe to integrate more of the history about each of the city on there and making it into a news source for each area as well.”

She said businesses in the county can utilize the county’s website.

“We’re actually hoping that businesses will be able to market through the website. A lot of the businesses don’t have a digital presence so unless you live in the county and know that they exist people have a hard time knowing that they are there. Especially if they’re trying to Google the area and see what’s around and they don’t show up,” Korson said. “We’re trying to help them with their search optimization by giving them the opportunity for a small fee to be able to have their own landing page and be a featured business.”
