The hours to the end of the 2014 United Way campaign are ticking down but a fast food restaurant is helping the agency in the final push to meet its goal.

As part of Eat, Drink, Live UNITED the United Way of Greater St. Joseph will receive 10% of sales made Wednesday at any St. Joseph McDonald’s before 7 p.m.

The campaign kicked off Oct. 23 with a goal of $3,145,000.

During the last campaign update only around 46% of that goal had been pledged, leaving another $1,686,394 for volunteers to raise before Nov. 6.

The final Campaign results will be announced Thursday at a Victory Dinner, held in Missouri Western’s Fulkerson Center. The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Northwest evacuates building due to possible gas leak

NWSU, NorthwestNorthwest Missouri State University evacuated a building on campus Wednesday morning after detecting a possible gas leak.

Northwest Media Relations Specialist Mark Hornickel said the Station, a conference center and dining facility were evacuated as a precaution around 9 a.m. this morning after faculty and staff who were doing preventative maintenance detected a possible gas leak.

Gas lines to two residence halls, Phillips and Millikan were shut off while leak is investigated.

The residence halls were not evacuated.

Hornickel said students in the residence halls should not see much of an impact with the gas lines shut off.

The Station reopened around 10:30 a.m. for students use. Hornickel said the P.O.D. Market will open during its regular business hours, beginning at 4 p.m., but Papa John’s will remain closed until further notice.

Heartland to cut around 50 positions over the next 2 months

heartlandHeartland Health has announced it will cut around 50 positions across the organization due to changes in staffing needs.

In a news release issued late Tuesday the hospital said because of industry trends towards fewer hospital inpatient services it is looking at more outpatient care and primary-care services and will focus more on preventative and health wellness.

Some of the adjustments Heartland Health and HRMC will make will include the accommodate of surgery center patients at the HRMC surgey suite to decrease what it calls “redundant services to creating a cost savings.”

As a result the news release said around 50 position across the organization will be impacted by the announcement representating a 1.3-percent total of its 3,760 caregivers and includes a cross section of job responsibilities across all areas of the organization. Senior leadership, clinical and support staff caregivers will be looked at for cuts. The hospital said a portion of the positions being cut are currently open positions.

The hospital states that the Heartland Talent Agency will be working with the vast majority of these caregivers to help them redeploy into other open positions within the system for the next 60 days.
