Students try “selling” robots to judges

20141029_103425Young entrepreneurs pitched robots as a business investment Wednesday at Webster Learning Center.

“He can talk he can show pictures on his face, he can move, and other stuff,” said William Hausman a 4th-graders in the St. Joseph School District Gifted and Talented program (GATE).

“Robots are not a toy, robots can help all around the world,” said GATE 4th-grader Joshua Peek.

Students in the GATE class presented their robot build to a panel of judges and attempted to sell the machine.20141029_103322

“As we build through the program we try to build through more entrepreneurship and getting the kids to understand business practices,” said GATE teacher Ashley Jevorutsky. “This is my first step to get the kids used to presenting to a group of people that is not necessarily their teacher.”

Students helped to put together a video advertising their robot and presented that video to the judges.

“They can help in the world,” said Hausman. “Go to outer-space, one’s up there right now on Mars.”

The Madraliers, Northwest Missouri State University’s chamber choir, will present a fall concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Charles Johnson Theater at the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building.

The chamber choir, directed by Dr. Brian Lanier, associate professor of music, will perform a varied program, including Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria, Hymn to St. Cecilia” by Benjamin Britten and “Six Chansons” by Paul Hindemith. The Vivaldi work will be performed with orchestra.

“My approach to choral music is to give our students a broad view of repertoire across time,” Lanier said. “The opportunity to perform master works such as the Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ with orchestral forces is a valuable experience for the students. Last fall we performed Bach’s ‘Magnificat,’ and ‘Gloria’ is a perfect companion piece for us to study and learn. The Britten work is very colorful and harmonically challenging. Hindemith’s ‘Six Chansons’ is a delightful setting of poems by Rilke about scenes from nature and seasons.”

The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.

The Madraliers have made numerous appearances for prestigious music organizations, including the American Choral Directors Association and the Missouri Music Educators Association. They will also present the 41st Annual Yuletide Feaste, Dec. 5-6 on the Northwest Campus.

The Madraliers choral ensemble is a select group of undergraduate and graduate students representing a variety of disciplines and majors at Northwest. In the spring, the same students become Celebration, the show choir for the University.

A playground launch party is being held Tuesday at Progressive Community Services to inform the public about a universal playground that will break ground in St. Joseph early next year.

Lynn Smith, Executive Director of Progressive Community Services said, “Our organization helps make sure that people with developmental disabilities are included in both the work and play in our community. Unlimited Play describes itself as an organization that “partners with community organizations and municipalities to design, fund raise and build universally accessible playgrounds.” The non-profit organization was born from the hopes of two parents who wanted their child with a developmental disability to be able to play on structures and with others at their community playground.

The community kicked off party will be held Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Progressive Community Services located at 1620 N. Woodbine Rd. in St. Joseph, Mo.
