“While the two subjects were in the physical altercation the suspect struck the victim in the head with an object,” Officer Greg Ogdahl with the St. Joseph Police Department said in a sworn probable cause statement. “While the two subjects were in the physical altercation the suspect struck the victim in the head with an object. The suspect then shot the victim at least one time causing fatal injuries to the victim.”

As we previously reported, police found Martin dead in a bathroom of the home located in the 1500 block of Felix St. Autopsy results indicate that Martin died as a result of a gunshot wound.

Hollandsworth turned himself into the Riverside Police Department Wednesday evening after being wanted for questioning in the investigation for more than a day.

“He ran from the scene of a shooting and was unable to be located for at least two days,” Ogdahl said.

Hollandsworth is scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday.

The prosecutor’s office said the class B felony of voluntary manslaughter carries a range of punishment from 5-15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, Count II alleges the felony of armed criminal action has a range of punishment from to minimum of 3 years to an unlimited number of years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

A second man, 58-year-old Joel Clark of St. Joseph was taken into custody Monday evening at the same time police responded to the home on Felix Street and charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. Court documents said Clark is a potential witness in the homicide investigation.

Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program in need of adopters

Adopt a FamilyMore than 700 families are asking for help this Christmas from the AFL-CIO Community Service’s Adopt-A-Family program.

The agency said after all of the applications were entered the tally stands at 789 families composed of 2,472 individuals.  That number is down slightly from 2014.

Last year there were 868 families who applied composed of 2,791 individuals.

As of Wednesday evening more than half had already been adopted but 339 families were still in need of some extra help this Christmas.

“Most of them try their best to manage their finances to make it day-to-day but to find extra dollars to purchase Christmas gifts is near impossible for them,” said Penny Adams, AFL-CIO Community Services Dir. “We will continue working through Christmas eve to get all the families adopted.”

Adams said the agency located at 1203 N. 6th St. is open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday and 9 to 1 on Saturdays.

For information on how to adopt call (816) 364-1131.

State School Board takes no action against former principal

Rudy Papenfuhs

The Missouri State Board of Education took no action to discipline the license to teach of former Smithville High School principal Dr. Rudy Papenfuhs.

In a recent meeting the board reviewed the investigation conducted by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and followed the recommendations that the board take no action against Papenfuhs’ teaching certificate.

The investigation summary  said on Sept. 24, 2014 Todd Schuetz, Superintendent of Smithville Schools, issued a statement of charges against Papenfuhs alleging that Papenfuhs willfully and persistently violated the Board policies on staff conduct and staff-student relations and presented a list of incidents in support of the allegations.

The findings state that Papenfuhs admits he violated the technical terms of the Board policies, but believes that the actions he took were justified at the time and appropriate as a part of his philosophy to be “student centered” and serve the whole child.

As we previously reported, the statement of charges against Papenfuhs said Papenfuhs provided unknown medications to a male student on several occasions, added a student to his vehicle insurance policy, purchased gifts including a hockey jersey and football tickets for a student and engaged in a text message conversation with a student in which he told a student “There is nothing I don’t love about you…”

“This whole scenario, this whole last year, has been very unfortunate for a lot of different people. Not the least of all myself and my wife and my family. I dedicated my profession to helping students. I dedicated my life as an educator to do whatever I needed to do within the power and the boundaries of my ability to help kids be successful. I asked nothing in return. I asked only that these students go on and make me proud and see what they could do to help others,” Papenfuhs said during the August hearing according to the documents.

On Oct. 16 Papenfuhs and the Smithville School District entered into a Separation Agreement and Release, which states that the agreement is not an inference, admission, concession of any liability or wrongdoing by either party and Papenfuhs resigned.

Second warning of a driver’s suspicious behavior issued by St. Joseph School District

SJSDAnother warning of a suspicious man trying to give a student a ride has been issued by the St. Joseph School District.

A middle school girl reported suspicious behavior Tuesday to administrators and police. The student said she was approached as she was walking near Humboldt Elementary School Tuesday afternoon after school.

An unidentified man offered to give her a ride, which made her uncomfortable. The district said the student ran to a safe place at Humboldt School and promptly informed staff members and police were notified.

In the most current report the man is described as having a chubby build, dirty blond hair and in his mid 30’s. The man was said to be driving a Grey/blue ford pickup traveling west on Cherry between Dewey and Main.

It’s the second warning regarding a man displaying suspicious behavior by the district in eight days. On Dec. 1 the district issued a similar warning of a white man with dirty blond hair, a scruffy beard, with a large build and of average height attempting to offer a high school girl a ride on her way to Central High School. That man was reported to be driving a gray car with a great dane sticker on the back window.

“We join the police in urging all students and their families to take precautions while away from home and particularly while traveling to and from school,” said Joey Austin, Dir. of Communications with the district. “All students are encouraged to not walk or wait alone while en route to school or at the bus stop.”

The police are asking residents to report any suspicious activities to their attention by calling (816) 271-4777. Students at school with information to report or with concerns should contact any school administrator or counselor.

“Our school district will be working closely with the police to assure the safety of our students,” Austin said.

Free haircuts, manicures and hairdos were offered to more than 20 students Wednesday at Truman Middle School.

In an effort to provide students a “new outlook for the new year” the school hosted what it calls a Pamper Party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We decided to try to raise some self-esteem, give them a holiday gift,” said Amber Smith, School Nurse. “Self-esteem, school attendance, school performance, health all kind of go hand-in-hand so we thought if we could make them feel awesome and hopefully this will extend beyond one day that this will help in other areas of school also.”

Various hairstylists from local businesses and salons volunteered their time to the pamper party.

“I got my makeup done and my nails done,” said Hailey Walker, a student at Truman. “It was fun. I learned how to do my nails a lot better and a lot fancier and I learned how to put on proper makeup.”

Ethan Brown is also a student at Truman and said he got his hair cut.

“I really like it a lot,” Brown said. “I decided to get it a lot longer at the top and shorter as it went down and got my hair parted to the side.”

Brown and Walker both said the day made them feel better.

Six stylists and more than 25 students took part in the event.

“There was no process we had for picking students,” Smith said. “The kids are excited, their parents are excited for them, some of them maybe couldn’t provide this for them otherwise at home.”

School Principal Jason Callaway also took part in the event helping to paint fingernails.

Mercy Group buys former Maryville Energizer facility

City of Maryville logoThe former Energizer Battery plant has been sold according to the City of Maryville.

Greg McDanel, Maryville City Manager said the facility officially sold Tuesday to the Mercy Group Foundation out of Tampa, Florida.

“Their intent is to market the facility to possible developers or to redevelop the facility for possible end users,” McDanel said. “The Mercy Group foundation is experienced in doing this, in locating end users for the facility and so this is a great step for the future of that facility.”

McDanel said Energizer announced the closure of the plant in 2012 and officially shutdown in 2013. The closure meant the loss of more than 300 jobs to the community.

“We’ve had a lot of growth in other areas of the community since then so some of that impact has been lessened but certainly anytime we lose jobs it’s a difficult thing for the community,” McDanel said.

McDanel said Mercy Group will begin to market the facility and hopefully find an end user for it.
