Preliminary hearing set in Maryville rape case

courtA preliminary hearing has been set for a man charged with rape during a house party in Maryville.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice said a preliminary hearing was scheduled Tuesday for July for 24-year-old Tyreak Speed.

Speed was charged with felony first-degree rape or attempted rape, and felony second degree rape in March.

Rice said the incident allegedly took place at a private house. It was the second rape case in a month’s time where the victim allegedly met her assaulter at a Maryville fraternity house.

Rice said several weeks prior to Speed being charged, 22-year-old Abraham Acosta was charged with first-degree rape or attempted rape. He said that incident allegedly took place at Tau Kappa Epsilon.  A pre-trial is also scheduled in July for Acosta who entered a not guilty plea earlier this month.

Aquatic Park opens, Krug pool still closed

St Joe Aquatic ParkThe Memorial Day weekend will kick off the official opening of only one St. Joseph pool.

The St. Joseph Aquatic Park will officially open for the season Saturday at 11 a.m., but the opening of Krug Pool remains in limbo.

The city already made the decisions to keep Hyde Pool closed earlier this year.

As of 1 p.m. Friday the City of St. Joseph had only employed a total of 36 lifeguards.

As we previously reported, in order to operate both the Aquatic Center and Krug Pool around 70 lifeguards would be needed.

Interim Parks Dir., Chuck Kempf said the opening of Krug Pool is still unknown.

He said there are enough lifeguards to operate the Aquatic Park but lifeguards are still needed to provide swim lessons and open Krug Pool.

“We have every intention for both of those,” Kempf said. “We will probably sit down next week and talk about our numbers and priorities.”

He said the city is still taking applications for lifeguards and is planning to hold another lifeguard training course sometime within the next two weeks.

A lifeguard training class ends Saturday morning, Kempf said he hopes to have more applicants after that course ends.

Kempf said if the city is able to open Krug Pool he doesn’t see is being on a daily basis but rather, on a three or four day a week schedule.

He hopes to know more within the next week about the city’s decision for the pool opening.
