A memorial service to honor Missouri firefighters who died in the line of duty will be held this weekend and will include four former St. Joseph firefighters.
Services will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri in Kingdom City.
A candlelight vigil will be held for all Missouri firefighters who have died while serving their communities on Saturday at 9 p.m. Then Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. a ceremony will be held to add two firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2014.
48-year-old Lt. Bruce E. Britt with the Columbia Fire Dept. lost his life trying to evacuate students from a University of Missouri residence apartment building when a portion of the building’s elevated walkway collapsed on Feb. 22, 2014. 45-year-old Chief Eddie J. Johnson with the Alton Fire Department died Oct. 20, 2014 in a single-vehicle crash while responding in a police vehicle to a house fire.
Five others members who lost their lives protecting citizens, including four from St. Joseph will also be added to the Fire Fighters Line of Duty Memorial Wall.
Those individuals are:
St. Joseph Fire Department Asst. Chief Clarence (Shorty) Stiles, who died at the age of 54 on June 29, 1968. He died after coming into contact with high voltage lines while climbing an aerial ladder at a fire scene. He was a 25-year veteran of the department.
St. Joseph Fire Department First Asst. Chief William A Huebner died at the age of 59 on Oct. 5, 1952. He died of an apparent heart attack while fighting a structure fire. He was a 35-year veteran of the department.
St. Joseph Fire Department Engineer Herman F. Metz died at the age of 56 on Feb. 22, 1918. Metz died after falling and being trampled by the horses pulling his fire vehicle en route to a fire.
St. Joseph Fire Department Firefighter Blass Argus will also be added to the wall. He died at the age of 35 on Jan. 23, 1870. Argus was one of three who died due to a structure fire. During secondary search operations a wall collapsed on Argus and four other firefighters. Argus died a short time after being severely injured.
The fifth individual to be added to the wall is Camdenton Rural Fire Association (now Camdenton Fire Protection District) Firefighter George Hill III. He died Oct. 26 1973 after a tanker truck he was riding in rolled over while responding to a vehicle fire, ejecting Hill and the driver.
“Firefighters across Missouri sacrifice time at home with their own families in order to rush to burning houses, overturned vehicles and other emergency calls,” said Acting State Fire Marshal Greg Carrell. “We remember the heroes we lost for the commitment they made to improve their communities and the examples they set for others in the fire service.”
Both events will take place at the Fire Fighters Memorial of Missouri, which is located one block northwest of the I-70 & U.S. Highway 54 intersection (I-70 Exit 148) in Kingdom City, Mo. In case of inclement weather, events will be moved to Auxvasse Elementary School, 650 E. Harrison St., Auxvasse, MO 65231.
(Updated) – The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the man’s body found earlier this week on 36 Hwy was killed by a semi truck.
According to crash reports, 36-year-old William Dau of St. Joseph was walking in the westbound lane of US 36 when he was hit by a 2014 Peterbilt driven by 60-year-old Mark Conn of Albany, Mo.
The crash was reported to have taken place around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.
However, it wasn’t until around 6:30 a.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol received word of a body found on the Highway, that’s when Sgt. Jake Angle said troopers first began investigating the case.
Dau was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy results indicated the cause of death was extensive crush trauma, with injuries that are consistent with having been struck by a vehicle.
However, Sgt. Angle said the semi driver, Conn properly reported the incident to the Buchanan County Communications Center prior to the Highway Patrol receiving word of a body found, expect he did not realize he had hit a human.
“He wasn’t sure what he hit, he thought he hit a deer and so when he reported it to the Comm Center that’s what he reported it as,” Sgt. Angle said.
Authorities said no charges will be filed.
“For whatever reason he (Dau) was walking in the driving lane in the dark and he got struck,” Sgt. Angle said. “It’s still an ongoing investigation.”

At least one Buchanan County resident has lost money in a phone scam originating overseas.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department has issued a warning letting residents know about a phone scam referencing Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes.
“Residents have been receiving calls from an 876 area code which is Jamaica, and they don’t mind telling you they’re from Jamaica but they also tell you you’re a $1.5 million dollar Publisher Clearing House winner and all you need to do is send them $750 so they can get everything done to get you your money,” said Capt. Mark Brock with the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Dept.
Numerous residents have been receiving calls from the scammers. Brock said he’s even received a call from the scammers who left him a message.
Unfortunately, not everyone realized it was a scam.
“One person negotiated a deal for $150 dollars,” Brock said. “They talked him into going to Wells Fargo and sending it to an address of their choosing.”
Brock said there is absolutely no way for police to work the case because the scam is originating out of the country.
A St. Joseph Post follower said she had received a call from the scammers also and left us this number: (876) 574-2671.
So we decided to see what we could find out.
On the first call we got a hold of a “John Logan” claiming to be with Publisher’s Clearing House.
“Yes, Mam’ this is the Publishers Clearing House Company, Ok?” Logan said in very slurred speech.
We informed Logan we had gotten the number from a friend and wanted to know how the process works.
“Please hold while I transfer you over to the manager they’re going to let you know how it works, Ok?” Logan said.
After a long pause we simply asked, “Are you guys scamming people in St. Joseph?”
Logan promptly hung up.
On our second attempt we got a hold of a “Mr. David Kennedy.” We asked Mr. Kennedy where they were based out of.
“We’re in the state of Missouri, Ok?” Kennedy said.
We asked, “How does this work? If you’re trying to offer somebody Publishers Clearing House Awards how does that work?”
Kennedy said, “You have to sign up, Ok?”
So we asked again, “Are you guys scamming people out of money?”
Kennedy said “no” before hanging up the line.
Our third attempt went straight to voice mail.
Capt. Brock said Publisher’s Clearing House does not call individuals to tell them they won. He urges residents to use caution in dealing with individuals over the phone and not to give out personal information in these types of situations. The best answer, simply hang up.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department is warning the public about another phone scam in the area.
The County sent out a Nixle alert Thursday morning telling the public to beware of calls from Jamaica referencing a Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes.
The County said it’s a scam and not to give out any information.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol have identified the man’s body found on U.S. Highway 36 westbound approximately 2 miles east of St Joseph, Missouri, in Buchanan County.
The man has identified as William Dau, black male, 36 years of age, from St Joseph, Missouri.
Preliminary autopsy results indicate the cause of death was extensive crush trauma, with injuries that are consistent with having been struck by a vehicle.
The next of kin has been notified and the investigation is continuing.
Complete autopsy results are pending at this time.
The St. Joseph Police Department is still searching for a suspect in connection with a North End stabbing.
According to Capt. Jeff Wilson a 22-year-old St. Joseph man was stabbed Tuesday around 4 p.m. in the 500 block of Lincoln St.
Wilson said the man was transported to Mosaic Life Care with a stab wound to his abdomen.
During the investigation police arrested a second individual in the same location, a 19-year-old St. Joseph man on an investigation charge unrelated to the stabbing.
Police are still looking for a suspect in connection with the stabbing. The suspect description given was just that he is a white male.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the TIPS Hotline at (816) 238-TIPS.
