Louise Williams 82, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, went to be with her Lord on Monday, June 19, 2017 in Saint Joseph, MO. She was born February 6, 1935 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of Lillian and James Miller. She attended Benton High School and was a member of King Hill Baptist Church. Louise married Roger Williams on December 11, 1964. She was a housewife and childcare provider for a numerous children. Louise had a passion and great love for any child she came in contact with. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, cooking, family functions, and annual trips to Jamesport, MO. Louise was preceded in death by husband, Roger Wayne Williams, father, James Miller, mother, Lillian Pearl, brother, Willis Miller, brother, James Milton, brother, Melvin Miller, brother, Elvin Miller, sister, Norma Kuhnert, sister, Lavina Miller. Survivors include, daughter, Debi Pierce of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Brenda Marriott of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Carla (Jim) Zawodny of St. Joseph, MO, son, James P. (Kim) Boone of Burns Flat, OK, 6 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am, on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. Jean E. Aberle
1923-2017

TROY, KANSAS – Jean (Lincoln) Aberle, 94, of Troy, Kansas died Saturday, June 17, 2017 in St. Joseph, Missouri

Jean was born on January 18, 1923 in Fairport, Missouri to Jay and Stella (Oaks) Lincoln. She attended Business School in St. Joseph and worked at American Optical Company also in St. Joseph for 40 years.

Jean is a member of the Troy First Christian Church of Troy.

Jean married John Aberle on August 27, 1952 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on October 23, 2002. She was also preceded by a sister, Aelcidean Stewart and a brother, J.W. Lincoln

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Rogers of the home
Brother, Dean Lincoln of Maysville, Missouri.
3 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 nieces and 1 nephew.

Larry Franklin Wilson
1950-2017


Larry Franklin Wilson 66, of St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, June 18, 2017 . He was born September 17, 1950 in St. Joseph, MO, to Robert “Bob” and Barbara Wilson. Larry spent his childhood and adult life in his hometown where he was a familiar face to many in the south end of town. Growing up, Larry enjoyed camping, family vacations, and playing baseball. He graduated from Benton High School in 1968 and made his career as a Boilermaker with Local Union 83. He loved being with friends, going out and playing bingo. He had a special relationship with his cousin, Diane Mazur and his sister, Debbie Lotz who helped take care of him.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother; Barbara Wilson, grandparents; George and Viola Meeks, Olive and Mary Walker, aunt; Donna Miller, aunt; June Wilson, aunt; Maxine McKenney, uncle; Gilbert Wilson, and uncle; Joe Wilson. Survivors include, his father; Robert “Bob” Wilson of St. Joseph, MO, daughter, Natalie (Kevin) Koehler, grandson, Noah Koehler all of Phoenix, AZ, and sister; Debbie (Tom) Lotz of St. Joseph, MO, aunt; Lou Wilson of St. Joseph, MO, special friends, Melissa Kretzer and Nancy Gunthery, and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mary Ellen Clay
1926-2017


Mary Ellen (Page) Clay, Onaga, 91, entered eternal celebration with her Lord on June 17, 2017. She was born on February 13, 1926 to Eston and Rhoda (Hoffman) Page at Grove, Kansas just north of Silver Lake. She attended Rossville High School and moved to Topeka shortly afterwards.

She married the love of her life Calvin Clay on April 13, 1952 at Grove, Kansas. They were blessed with two sons William Ross Clay (Darlene), Yukon, Oklahoma and Robert Nathan Clay (Linda), Rogers, Arkansas and one daughter Daisy Marie Parker (Alexander), Berryton, Kansas. She greatly loved her five grandchildren; Page and Abby Parker, Teresa (Nicholas) Sweet and Michael (Sarah) Clay and David (Jenna) Clay, they brought her great joy. She was blessed to have four great grandchildren, Ava Clay, Griffin Clay and Reece and Sarabelle Sweet. Her family was one of the most important things in her life. She was very proud that all three of her children graduated College, an experience she had not had.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her father and mother (Eston Page 1955 & Rhoda (Hoffman) Page 1965), one brother William 1969 and one sister Esther (Page) Knowlton 2006. Her beloved husband Calvin, aka Papa, preceded her in death on February 9, 2017 a little over four months prior to her. They are together again in eternity.

Mary Ellen worked for Hallmark Greeting Cards for five years in Topeka, Kansas until she married Calvin and moved to a farm six miles north of Onaga, Kansas. They farmed together as a true team where they raised cattle and pigs. She also raised registered dogs (Collies, Boston Terriers and Miniature Schnauzers) for almost four decades. She was a true Farmers wife helping with everything on the farm along with raising their three children. Mary Ellen enjoyed sewing and made at least a hundred blankets, or more, which she gave to family, friends and strangers. You knew you were loved when you received one of her blankets. She was highly involved in 4-H as a youth and with her daughter. She enjoyed numerous bus trips, activities and the lasting relationships she formed as a vital part of that organization.

She was a wonderful mother with a strong spirit and an even stronger sense of family and God, which she passed on to her children along with an eye for a good bargain and the love of chocolate ice cream.

Mary Ellen spent the last eight years of her life at Eastridge Care Facility in Centralia, Kansas, where she enjoyed a rousing game of bingo with anyone that would play. She graduated into eternity surrounded by her daughter and one granddaughter. Though she will be truly missed, we are all so glad she made it to heaven in time to spend Father’s Day with both her father and Papa. Blessed are those who are pure in heart, for they will see The Lord.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24th at the First Congregational Church, UCC in Onaga. Burial will follow in the Neuchatel Cemetery. Bud Buffey
1951-2017


Bud Buffey, 65, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017.
He was born August 19, 1951 to Charles and Norma Jean (McMachen) Buffey.
Bud graduated from Central High School and later received his Bachelors in social work and political science at Missouri Western State University. He was a social worker for the State Hospital for over twenty-five years.
He was an avid reader and a political junkie.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and brother, Ricky Buffey.
Survivors include daughter, Samantha Shehan; friend and longtime companion Diana Taylor; grandchildren, Michael and Isaac Shehan; father, Charles Buffey; sister, Vicki Stubbs; beloved dogs and cat, Nicky, Sunshine and Mooshie.

Sylvia L. Cluck, 76, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, June 16, 2017.
She was born January 7, 1941 in Axtell, Kansas to Fred Kelley and Marjorie DeLong, they preceded her in death.
Sylvia married Warren Cluck May 31, 1963, he survives of the home.
She was employed with Quaker Oats for over twenty-one years.
Sylvia enjoyed traveling, gardening, spending time with her family and grandchildren and loved raising horses.

Robert C. “Bob” Dowell, Jr.
1943-2017


Robert C. “Bob” Dowell, Jr., 73, Stanberry, Missouri passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017 at his home.
He was born August 26, 1943 to Robert, Sr. and Monnie Dowell in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bob was a talented Jack of All Trades, which included farming, carpentry and woodworking. He loved his wife, family, the farm and his bird, Joshua. They broke the mold when they made Bob, his stories will provide laughter and heartfelt memories for generations to come.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Patricia (Pippitt) Dowell.
Survivors include his children, Larry Park (Zenny), Leslie Price (Ted), Whitney Park (Zelda), John Park (Cheryl), Linda Yazdani (Saied) and Lara Herrera (Ray); sister, Bonnie Elam; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family; and his adoptive Amish family.

Lee Koehler
1937-2017


Lee Koehler 79, of St. Joseph, Missouri, went to be with his Lord, Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in St. Joseph, MO. He was born November 13, 1937 in Troy, KS, son of Mae and Oren Koehler. He graduated from Troy High School class of 1955. He married Lola James on May 19, 1957 in Fanning, KS. He was a retired Meat Cutter and member of Local Union # 576. Lee loved spending time with his family and enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and helping people. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #238, Rushville, MO, Scottish Rite, Moila Shrine, and Eagles Lodge, where he was a past secretary. Lee was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers and a sister. Survivors include, wife, children, Gina, Warren Lee (Lynette), Duane (Terri) and Kevin (Marlene), 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and sister, Edna Hunsaker.

Milford “John” Gibson, Na Whe Hen
1939-2017

Milford “John” Gibson, Na Whe Hen, passed on June 11, 2017 to be with his beloved wife, Sharon. Thoreau said, “The man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest.” Milford required only family or friends to be truly happy. Always willing to help or just listen as he did the past month in staying with a dying friend. Milford will be truly missed. However, his smile and love will live on in all who loved him.

He was born May 29, 1939 on the Six Nations Onondaga Clear Sky Reservation in Canada, of the Turtle Clan, the son of Simeon and Lena Silversmith Gibson.

Milford was a roofing, siding and painting contractor.

He married Sharon Levier in 1963. She died November 29, 2015.

Milford was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters.

Survivors include four children, Theodore Gibson and Robert Gibson, both of Topeka, and Lena Gibson and Simion Gibson, both of the home; and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation is planned and services will be private. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt is assisting the family.

Russell Allen “Russ” Meyer
1952-2017


HIAWATHA, KS With family by his side, Russell Allen Meyer, passed from this life early Friday morning, June 16, 2017, at his home, west of Hiawatha, at the age of 65.

A Celebration of Russ’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Rich Lehmkuhl officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Monday where the family will meet from 6 until 7 that evening.

Known by family and friends as Russ, he was born February 16, 1952, at Hiawatha, one of three children born to Wayne and Mary Margaret Larson Meyer, and had lived nearly all of his life in Hiawatha. He graduated from Hiawatha High School with the class of 1970, and attended Highland Junior College. Russ in his younger years, grew up helping to do hog chores on the farm. He lived his lifelong passion…farming, working with his Dad and brother Roger. Russ also owned and operated Jayhawk Tavern for a number of years. That is how he started with karaoke where he was involved with area events and family functions. Another one of his passions was camping.

Survivors include a brother Roger Meyer (Angie Orton) of Hiawatha; a sister Carol Mercurio (Frank) of Scott City; three nieces: Gina Hendricks (Riley), Lisa Boksha (Matt), and Denise Meyer. His caregiver and good friend is Elma Wallace.

Russ was preceded n death by his parents.

Lyle R. Brown
1928-2017


Longtime Hiawatha insurance agent Lyle R. Brown, surrounded by family, passed from this life June 16, 2017, at Vintage Park in Louisburg, KS, at the age of 89.

Lyle was born January 27, 1928, at Garden City, Kansas, one of two children born to Loren and Inez Davis Brown. He moved to Wetmore as a young boy and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1946. Lyle had many jobs over the years from throwing hay to a mechanic to a salesman. He was drafted in the Korean War in 1950. He went to OCS and was a 2nd lieutenant upon discharge in 1958.

Lyle owned and operated Brown’s Sporting Goods and Brown Insurance Agency in Hiawatha for over fifty years before retiring.

Mr. Brown was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha; longtime member of Hiawatha County Club; a professional insurance organization of independent insurance agencies. He enjoyed fishing, and the joy of having a family. He was a former member of Kiwanis Club of Hiawatha.

Lyle moved to Hiawatha in 1965 and married Delores Wenger from Sabetha on Jan 13, 1968. They enjoyed their life together golfing, boating, traveling and spending time at the lake house. She survives.

Other survivors include their children: Terri Kissinger Williams (Jimmy) of Carthage, NC, Roger Brown (Carla) of Wichita, KS, Jan Kissinger (Kris) of Clay Center, KS, Cindy Kissinger Farris of Indianapolis, IN , Mike Brown (Deb) of Hiawatha, Julie Kissinger Burg of Louisburg, KS, Mark Brown of Lockhart, TX, Megan Brown Hill (Andy) also of Louisburg; and 16 grandchildren.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; a son Robert; and a sister Loretta Wittenbach.

A Celebration of Lyle’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, at First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha. Reverend Jacob Cloud will officiate. Private family internment will be at Sabetha Cemetery, with military honors a courtesy of Brown County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Morrill Free Public Library of Hiawatha, or the First United Methodist Church, sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th, Hiawatha KS 66434.

Michael Scott Brown
1960-2017


Michael Scott Brown 57, of Springfield, Missouri passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at his home. He was born May 12, 1960 in Oceanside, California. He graduated from Benton High School in 1978. He served in the United States Navy, then worked in the sign business, installing neon signs as well as doing some electrical work. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Harold R. Brown. Survivors include wife, Vicki Brown of Springfield, MO, mother, Jeanette (Paul) Atha, Saint Joseph, MO, daughters, Natalie Pharis, Liberty, MO, and Lindsay Brown, St. Joseph, MO, brother, Brett Brown, St. Joseph, MO, and sister, Stacy Picou, Beaumont, TX. There will be a Private Graveside Memorial Service to be held a later date at Mount Olivet Cemetery. He will be cremated under the direction and care of the Rupp Funeral Home.

Vernon Harold Finley
1936-2017


Vernon Harold Finley 81, of Hiawatha, Ks went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 in Hiawatha, Ks. Vernon was born on May 27th, 1936 in Beloit, Ks the youngest of 4 children to Doris Mae (Shane) and Harold Arthur Finley.

Vernon married his high school sweetheart Louise Anna Fisher on June 19th, 1955 having 3 children: Ray, Barbara, and David. Vernon and Louise lived in Colorado while Vern worked as a telegrapher and then returned to Kansas where he worked for Kindel Electric, and drove a truck for Western Auto.

Accepting a call to the ministry in 1964, Vern was ordained into the American Baptist Church. He attended Friends University graduating in 1968 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Psychology. He then attended Central Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, KS graduating with a Master’s of Divinity Degree. In addition to his schooling and ministry work, Vern also spent time as a Store Owner for Western Auto, and drove a semi-truck for Hoffman Transfer. During his 35 years of ministry, he pastored 7 different churches across Kansas and Nebraska serving with a passion and love for the Lord and his people. Vern retired from full time ministry in 2004 but continued on an interim basis serving at 3 additional churches in Kansas.

Louise passed away in 1993 and Vern remarried to Mary Barben on April 8th, 1995. Mary brought 4 kids to this union: Sandra, Debra, DeeAnn, and Keith.

Vern treasured spending time with all his family and sharing his love of the outdoors. Many memorable times were shared through camping, fishing, boating, or gardening with family.

Vern is survived by his wife Mary, 7 kids: Ray (Theresa) Finley of Westmoreland, KS, Barbara (Kipp) Spier of Tecumseh, NE, David Finley of Sycamore, IL, Sandra Coine of San Diego, CA, , Debra (Dennis) Kirkendall of Falls City, NE, DeeAnn (Jared) Hinkle of Hiawatha, KS and Keith (Jennifer) Erdley of Hiawatha, KS as well as 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death his parents Harold and Doris Finley, his 1st wife Louise Finley, sisters Marie Menhusen-Montgomery, Norma Kindel, Opal Bell Finley, daughter-in-law Marsha Finley

A Celebration of Vern’s life is planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Hiawatha.

The family will meet with friends at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening.

Graveside services and internment are planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Glenwood Cemetery, Glen Elder, KS.

Kevin “Frankie” Gross
1961-2017


Kevin “Frankie” Gross, 56, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, June 12, 2017.
He was born May 10, 1961 in Santa Monica, California to Edward and Marilyn (Brown) Gross, Jr.
Kevin married Cindy McIntosh on January 5, 2008, she survives of the home.
He was a 1980 graduate of Alcester, SD High School and later got his degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. Kevin was a manager of Supply & CMO Planning at Boehringer-Ingelheim.
Kevin enjoyed camping, HO trains and Nascar, especially Jimmie Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and nephew, Ryan Sommervold.
Additional survivors include sons, Gordon (Holly Taylor), Stewartsville, Missouri, Kory (Katie Burns),St. Joseph, Missouri, Kyle (Cynthia), Peculiar, Missouri and Alex Gross, St. Joseph, Missouri;
step-daughter, Kalanie McIntosh; grandchildren, Jordan Taylor and Landin Wallace; brothers, Ed and Mike Gross (Jody); sisters, Michelle Sommervold (Kurt), and Tess Nelson (Craig); mother-in-law, Lorraine Sherman; his kids, Gus and Tess; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward Elmer DeLay
1925-2017

Edward Elmer DeLay 92, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at his home. He was born April 21, 1925 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Laura and Elton DeLay. He served in the Navy and is a veteran of the World War II. After his service he then worked at Hyklass Foods in the bakery department for 20 years, then for the St. Joseph School District in the maintenance department for 12 years. He enjoyed woodworking, and was a Christian. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Ada, and Edna Evans. Survivors include wife, Josephine DeLay of the home, son, Eddie DeLay, daughter, Elsie Reynolds, St. Joseph, MO, stepson, Donald Milbourn, Saint Joseph, MO, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, two brothers, Norman DeLay and Tony Milbourn.
Graveside funeral services and interment will be conducted on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 11:00 am, at the Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home.

Joyce Marie Moppin
1939-2017


Joyce Marie Moppin, 78 of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at her home. She was born May 7, 1939 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Violet and Charles Silvey. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1957 and married Gary Moppin on June 6, 1958 and he survives of the home. Joyce worked at Mead Products for 22 years then at the Mid-Buchanan School. She was an excellent cook and cake decorator and enjoyed fishing, bowling, and watching baseball especially the Kansas City Royals. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include, husband, Gary Moppin of the home, three sons, Darrell Wayne (Carol) Moppin, Faucett, MO, Mark Allen (Sheila) Moppin, Payson, AZ, and Steve (Sheila) Moppin, Agency, MO, four grandchildren: Gary Moppin, Faucett, MO, Cody Higdon, Kalei (Brenton) Becerra, and Cassy Moppin, two brothers, Melvin Silvey, St. Joseph, MO, and Sherman Silvey, Goliad, TX.

Carol Louise Dilley
1941-2017


Carol Louise Dilley 75, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Tuesday June 13, 2017 at her home. She was born July 18, 1941 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma daughter of the late Caroline & Lester Cox. She was a home health care giver. She enjoyed crocheting, watching soap opera’s, and playing baseball with the kids. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Dilley, her parents, brother, Leslie Cox, sisters, Shirley Ramey, and Bert Cox. Freda Evelyn Mumaw
1921-2017


Freda Evelyn Mumaw Donovan, 96, of Kansas City, MO, formerly of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully in the comfort and care of her devoted daughters on June 1, 2017. She was born March 25, 1921 in Onaga, KS, the daughter of Genevieve Henderson Mumaw and Lloyd Wallace Mumaw. She was a 1938 graduate of Onaga High School, and a 1942 graduate of Kansas State University with a B.S. in Home Economics and Institutional Management. She completed a Dietetic Internship at Johns Hopkins University Hospital before being offered a position at the Alfred I. Dupont Institute Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, DE. She was a Registered Dietician and member of the Delaware Dietetic Association, where she served as its president and liaison to the Delaware School Administrators Association. Freda met Maurice M. Donovan in Wilmington at a YMCA dance after WWII and married on August 20, 1949 at the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. After their daughters began school, Freda served as the cafeteria manager of the Harlan Elementary School, and when she retired she was one of the top administrators of the New Castle County School Food Services. Her volunteer work included hospitality chair for Carrcroft School, and Reach to Recovery for Breast Cancer Survivors for many years. Her love, devotion, and passion for her family knew no bounds. From her sumptuous holiday dinners to her ever present smile and good cheer, she delighted her family and friends by her very presence. Her favorite activities were traveling with her husband Maury, cooking, vegetable gardening, and fishing in the Delaware Bay.

She is survived by her three daughters Maureen D. Carman (William), of Versailles, formerly of Lexington, KY; Sharon D. Coffman of Kansas City, MO; and Carole D. Pugh (James) of Northbrook, IL; as well as nine grandchildren: W. Daniel (Dan) Carman, W. Andrew (Drew) Carman, Sarah Behler, Dane Broadie, Scott Coffman, Amy Coffman, Michael Pugh, Andrew Pugh, and Kelsey Pugh; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law Treva Mumaw. Freda was preceded in death by her husband Maury, her mother, father and brothers.

Freda’s family would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the wonderful caring staffs at Crossroads Hospice and The Gardens at Barry Road. A private memorial service will be held at the Onaga Cemetery in Onaga, KS. Barbara Anne Babcock 87, of Saint Joseph, MO passed away peacefully Sunday, June 11, 2017 at her home. She was born March 16, 1930 in Atchison, KS. She graduated from Mount Saint Scholastica High School, and married Wesley Babcock on August 22, 1950 in Atchison, Kansas. She worked at the Sisters Hospital, and Heartland Hospital as a Emergency Room Admission Clerk and in the Nursery. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing doll clothing, bowling, bird watching, and she was an avid KU basketball fan. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was fondly known as the “Nintendo Grandma”.
Barbara was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Wesley D. Babcock, father, Edward James Jackson, mother, Maxine Anna Thorsen, son, Jay Richard Babcock, and brother, James E. Jackson. Survivors include five children: Anne (Terry) Schurman, Spring Hill, KS, Sarah (Jack) Conaway, St. Joseph, MO, Mark (Gayle) Babcock, St. Joseph, MO, Charlie (Dee) Babcock, Saint Joseph, MO, and Bridget (Dale) Pritchett of St. Joseph, MO, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 16, 2017 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Father Matthew Rotert Celebrant. HOYT – Ethan A. Everts, 43, of Hoyt, died Sunday, June 11, 2017 at his home due to injuries sustained in a tractor accident.

He was born December 16, 1973 in Dallas, Texas the son of Steven A. and Martha L. Nevitt Everts.

Ethan was known for his wit and humor and could make anybody laugh.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 9535 in Mayetta, both in Mayetta.

Ethan was a maintenance technician for Banner Mobility in Topeka.

He married Christina A. McGrath on January 3, 1998 at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys. She survives, of the home.

Ethan was preceded in death by his father, Steven A. Everts.

Other survivors include his children, Colin James, Abigail Rose and Madelyn Nicole Everts, all of the home, his mother, Martha Everts, Topeka, a sister, Emily L. Everts and a brother, Andrew S. Everts, both of Topeka.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 15th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery at Hoyt. Ethan will lie in state Wednesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m., followed by visitation until 8:30. Peggy Jean Heideman, 60, of Hamlin, KS passed away at her home with her family by her side on June 12, 2017 following a brief illness with cancer.

Peggy was born in Wichita, Kansas on February 19, 1957, the third of seven children to Alvin and Ethel Phillips Gilbert. She graduated from Sabetha High School in 1975. Later that year on September 26th, she married Ronald L. Heideman.

For the last 20 years, Peggy has worked at Brown County Developmental Services. She also volunteered her time with Northeast Kansas Multicounty Hospice. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going on vacations with her sisters and mother to various places around the nation. Her favorite activities were crocheting and embroidery work, attending and watching NASCAR races, playing games on Facebook, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons, Dean Heideman of Clear Lake, IA and Michael Heideman of Stella, NE; grandchildren: Brynn Heideman, Wyatt Heideman, Levi Heideman, Bridget Heideman, and Rhett Heideman; mother: Ethel Gilbert (Phillips); and siblings: Lonnie Gilbert, Connie Rowland (Tom), Debbie Hewitt (Randy), Bobby Gilbert, Teresa Gilbert, and Gary Gilbert (Carolyn). She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron Heideman in 1997, and her father, Alvin Gilbert.

Funeral services are planned at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Christian Center, 519 N First St., Hiawatha. Cheryl Mishler will officiate. Internment will follow at Hamlin Cemetery.

John was born July 3, 1932 in Atchison, KS, the son of Hyland and Myrtle (Conner) Church. He served in the United States Army for twenty years. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and the VFW. John enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling, woodworking and visits from the grandchildren, great grandchildren and his sister.

John married Delores Bond on May 3, 1953 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, KS; she preceded him in death on July 19, 2014. Survivors include, a sister, Carol and Bill Knoch, Ft. Wayne, IN, two grandchildren, Jennifer and Todd Halling, Lenexa, KS and Billy Jasper, St. Joseph, MO, great grandchildren, Noah and Brooke Halling and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, Craig Church, a daughter, Sheila Church, two brothers, Larry and Hyland (Butch) Church, a sister Wanda Church Barnett.

Irene Marie Theresia Saulan
1935-2017


Irene Marie Theresia Saulan, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 at a local healthcare facility.
She was born June 13, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri and was placed in St. Anthony’s Home for Infants. Choosing her mother, Mabel Saulan resulted in a January 11, 1937 adoption and her new home with John and Mable Saulan in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Irene and her family moved to Madison, WI in 1939 where Irene’s sister Monica was born in 1940. Irene attended St. Patrick grade school from kindergarten through eighth grade. She then went to Edgewood High School and Edgewood College with a B.S in Education in 1958. She obtained a M.S. degree in 1971 and a Doctoral Fellow in 1973. She taught for four years in Kansas City, later coming to St. Joseph in 1962 where she taught at St. Francis Xavier and Immaculate Conception Catholic Schools. In 1967 she joined the SJSD and in 1969 Irene began the Learning Disabilities program. The rest of her teaching career was spent in special education and after 38 years in the education field she retired in 1996.
Irene was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Altar Society, Retired St. Joseph Public School District Personnel, a lifetime member of MSTA and The Lady Hawks.
Irene’s closest friend of over thirty years, Suecilla Adwell shared her love of travel, photography, eating out, and caregiving of family members.
She was preceded in death by her father, John in 1965, her mother Mabel in 1999; and her sister Monica in 2004.
Survivors include caregivers, Suecilla and Ernest Adwell, Michelle Bally and Irene’s feline companion, Fluffy.

Dale was born January 8, 1933, in Waterloo, IA the son of Olin and Lenora (Meyer) Fitkin. He worked for Atchison Casting for many years and various positions around Atchison. Dale was member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, going to bingo, watching TV game shows, the Royals, cooking and baking pies. Dale especially enjoyed his pets and taking care of people.

Dale married Beverly Barker on May 27, 1958. They were later divorced. Survivors include his dog, Link, his children; Kenneth (Sharon) Fitkin, Rushville, MO, Dale Lynn Fitkin and Dan Wolfe, Kansas City, MO, Danny (Lavern) Fitkin, Susan (Glen) Schmidt, Randy (Kelly) Fitkin, of Atchison, KS, and, eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren with one on the way and one great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Robert and his twin; Delbert Fitkin, two sisters; Eunice Fitkin and Mary Quigley.

Robert “Bob” G. Thorpe
1947-2017


Robert “Bob” G. Thorpe, 70, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 7, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Bob graduated from Central High School in 1965. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from William Jewell College in 1969 and a Master’s Degree in Education from Northwest Missouri State in 1976.
Mr. Thorpe worked for the U.S. Department of Interior at Yellowstone National Park as a Park Ranger. He later taught and coached at Lathrop High School from 1969 to 1978, then Lafayette High School from 1978 to 2001. He also officiated women’s college basketball, high school cross country, and track and field. Bob was inducted into the MSHSAA Hall of Fame in 2016 for his work as an official.
Bob was a member of Ashland United Methodist Church, the Beta Xi chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Kansas National Guard and was an Eagle Scout.
He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family at the lake.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald B. Thorpe.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon (Koehnlein) Thorpe; children, Kim Kruse (Tom) and Kyle Thorpe (Zach Ozbun); two grandchildren, Cole and Cassie Kruse; mother, Martha G. 1932-2017


Sammy Joe Dunn, 84, of Highland, died Thursday evening, June 8, 2017, at his home.

Sam was born at Highland, August 14, 1932, one of four sons born to Charles and Harriet Alverna Sechler Dunn and was a lifelong Highland resident. He attended Highland schools where he graduated high school with the class of 1950. He enlisted with the U.S. Navy where he served for three years, discharged in 1953, at the rank of E5. Sam returned to Highland, and, along with his brother Charles, purchased Dunn Oil Co from their Dad in 1952. They operated a service station and offered bulk petroleum products to farmers/businesses in the Doniphan County area for 35 years before retiring.

Sam was a warm, kind, gentle man with a dry sense of humor. Every other Sunday when he wasn’t working, the family would go for a drive for good family time together. He was also a member of BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge; and Dillon-Bales Post, Highland. Sam delivered Meals-on-Wheels in Highland for many years.

He was married to Barbara Ryan-Titus, April 30, 1961, at Hiawatha. She died November 6, 1994. Sam was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Lloyd, Charles, and Jimmy.

Survivors include two sons: Charles L. Dunn of Highland, David Dunn (Asmae) of Spring, TX;

Step-children: Dennis Titus (Nanci) of Wichita, Carl Titus of Wichita, and Rachel Titus Durand (Phillip) of Shawnee, KS; 9 grandchildren: Tristan, Brett, Kaitlin, Chris, Dustin, Sami Jo, Amanda, Yasmine, and Nabilah; and 5 great-grandchildren

Edmond Eugene “Gene” Rush
1934-2017


Edmond Eugene “Gene” Rush, of Highland, KS died Friday afternoon, June 9th, 2017 at the age of 82.

Gene was born August 15, 1934 on a small farm three miles east of Highland, the youngest son of Virgil and Ida (Ploeger) Rush. The Rush family were 5th generation farmers, Gene learned his way through his brothers and father. He grew up in Doniphan County and went to school at Severance. He graduated Severance High School in 1954 and joined the United States Army until ­­­1956.

Gene and Sally (Kerr) Rush married on April 19th, 1957 at the Severance Methodist Church. The couple were high school sweethearts and farmed all their married lives in Doniphan County where they also raised four children. In 1995, Gene and Sally moved to Highland, KS and opened The Meadowlark Bed and Breakfast where they enjoyed 20 years of hosting people from all over the country at their home.

Gene was known for his kind demeanor and cheerful personality. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, working on equipment, caring for animals, and keeping up on current events. He liked to travel in his younger days and truly loved the landscapes of Alaska, where he was also stationed as a young man in the U.S. Army and enjoyed various fishing trips visiting Alaska. Gene loved to spend time on his farm with his sons and grandson working on his various projects, and taking care of the animals he acquired. He was a gentle man, generous and a lifelong learner; Gene cared for his wife, Sally, up until his death.

Gene is survived by his wife Sally of the home; his sons; Paul and Karla Rush, of Highland; Tim and Sherri Rush of Wimberley, Texas; Mike and Tammy Rush, of Leona; a daughter; Julie Tevebaugh and her husband Dale, of Leavenworth; his grandchildren; Jackie Wilburn, of Prairie Village, KS and Stephanie Wilburn Lykins, of Lawrence, KS; Morgan Rush, of Kansas City, and Mason Rush and Brooklyn Rush, of Highland, his sister Shirley Silva, of Bela Horizonte, Brazil; numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

He is preceded in death by his brothers; Joe Rush, Frank Rush, Hylen Rush, Harold Rush, George Rush and his sister; Audrey Roberts.

A Celebration of Gene’s life is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Highland United Methodist-Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Severance.

Charlotte “Gwen” (Page) Bird 87, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017. She was born January 10, 1930 in Rushville, MO, daughter of the late Ernest and Willie (Conard) Page. Gwen attended Benton High School and worked at Naberhaus Groceries, Bellas-Hess, and was a homemaker. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, and loved spending time with her family. Gwen was a longtime member of Carnegie Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, and served as the church treasurer and Sunday School secretary. She then joined Immanuel Baptist Church.Gwen married Billie Lee Bird, Sr. March 22, 1950. He passed away on June 8th, 1995. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a daughter Charlotte Kay Bird and her 11 brothers and sisters. Jeaniece Marie Benedict 69, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care Hospital. She was born August 31, 1947 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Virginia and Peter Nurski. She graduated from Benton High School class of 1965 and married Richard Benedict in 1972, he survives of the home. She worked at Boehringer-Ingelheim in the Research and Development department retiring after 20 years of service. She enjoyed crocheting, and loved spending time with her family, her grandsons were her whole world. Jeaniece was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister Virginia Standifer. Survivors include, husband, Richard Benedict of the home, son, Douglas Wayne (Jenifer) Benedict, St. Joseph, MO, grandsons, Kodi (Cori) Benedict, Kyle Benedict, and Cameron Norris, 2 great grandsons, Dallas & Karsen, and a brother, Richard Nurski, St. Joseph, MO.

Elmer Louis Hatheway Sr. 71, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at his home with his family by his side. He was born May 5, 1946 in Stanberry, MO, son of the late Nora and Emmett Hatheway. He married Billie Doris Scott in 1964 and they settled down in Cosby, MO and raised their family for over 30 years. He worked at Missouri Iron & Metal Co. as a Yard Supervisor for over 35 years, He served as Mayor of Cosby at one time, and was a volunteer fire fighter, boy scout leader and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. Elmer was a avid lover of camping, hunting, fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, 14 brothers and sisters, and 2 grandchildren, Dekoda E.L. Neill, and Nicole Elizabeth Hatheway. Survivors include, wife, Billie Doris Hatheway of the home, eight children: Ricky Hatheway, Belinda Petitt, Lena Fetters, Elmer Hatheway, Jr., Ronnie Hatheway, Billy Hatheway, Debra Neill, and Everett Hatheway, 27 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. and numerous nieces and nephews, and his loving companion Lady.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Rupp Funeral Home, with Rev. Roger Wilcoxen, and Pastor Dave Hugger officiating, The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home. The Interment will be at the Bethel Cemetery, Cosby, Missouri. Memorials are requested to the Friends of the Animal Shelter.

Patricia R. Nigus
1942-2017


Hiawatha, KS Patricia R. Nigus, 74, of Hiawatha, passed away with her family by her side, June 6, 2017, at the Pines South in Hiawatha.

She was born in Highland, Kansas on September 30, 1942, the youngest of four children born to John Wesley and Nellie Fern Beaman Koelliker. Patricia “Pat” attended Highland Schools and graduated from Highland High School in 1960 and Highland Community College in 1962, with an associate’s degree in business. She married Don L. Nigus on August 26th of that year.

Survivors include her husband Don of the home; son Philip (Tammy) Nigus of Olathe, KS; triplet daughters: Lisa (Terry) Weiland of Bendena, Lori (Gary) Snavely of St. Joseph, Lynn Rupe of Wathena; nephew Michael David (Missy) Nigus, Atchison, 8 grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers Gene (Pat) Koelliker of Hiawatha, Gary (Phyllis) Koelliker of Highland; and a sister Connie Koelliker of Hiawatha.

Pat was preceded in death by parents; and a grandson James Francis Weiland.

Pat worked in clerical positions in several school districts across Kansas from Doniphan County in the Northeast to Kearny and Haskell County in the Southwest prior to serving as the Outpatient Clinic Receptionist at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where she retired.

She was the 1961 Apple Blossom Queen Candidate for Highland Community College. One of her greatest joys was her family, in particular her children and giving birth to triplets.

A Celebration of Pat’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Rhonda Boeckman will deliver the eulogy, assisted by Ryan VanPeursem.

The family will meet with friends starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Freda Lou married George Kenneth Bahr on May 23, 1948 in Wathena, Kansas. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents & a grandson, Bryan Bahr.

Glenn was born on November 27, 1924 in Effingham, KS, the son of Brown and Pauline (Weit) Hargrove. He graduated from ACCHS in 1942. Glenn farmed for many years. He was member of the Effingham Union Church, Lions Club of Effingham, KS, IOOF Lodge #250 of Effingham, KS, a FFA State Farmer along with being an Honorary Member. Glenn enjoyed his grandkids and Royals Baseball.

Glenn married E. Louise Hunt on March 11, 1951 at the First Baptist Church in Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on October 27, 2003. Survivors include a daughter, Barb and Gary Jacobson, Effingham, KS, a son, Daniel and JoJo Hargrove, Redcloud, NE, a brother Max Hargove, Rushville, MO, a sister, Geraldine Wohlgemuth, Effingham, KS, eight grandchildren, Nick and Jennifer Eylar, Samantha and Barry Lamb, Heather and Jeremiah Jackson, Angela Eylar and fiancé Scott Davison, Marc Hargrove, Cassie Muckenthaler, Brandon and Joy Muckenthaler, Lance Hargrove, and five great grandchildren.

—HIGHLAND –Helen Darlene Davis, 47, of Highland, died Saturday afternoon, June 3, 2017, at Mosiac Life Care Center in St. Joseph, Missouri, with her husband by her side.

Helen was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, June 21, 1969, adopted by Harvey and Donna Lewis. She grew up at Edgar, Nebraska where she attended schools and graduated high school. She in recent years, took some classes thru Vatterott College. Helen served with the U.S. Navy a few years, stationed in Virginia and Florida before receiving a medical discharge.

She married Victor Davis over 20 years ago. They lived in Hastings, Nebraska a few years before moving to St. Joseph, MO. They have made their home in Highland the past 10 years, where she recently worked at Ernie’s Bar and Grill before it closed. Victor survives of the home.

Also surviving are three sons: Gavin Davis of Texas, Shane Thompson (Holly) of Colorado, Lewis Davis of Highland; a daughter Chrystal Davis (Jeremy) of Highland; and numerous grandchildren. Surviving also is a brother Clint Lewis; two sisters: Char Thomas, and Lori, all of Hastings, Nebraska area.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Celebration of Helen’s life is planned for this weekend (June 10, 11) at the northwest side of Brown County State Lake, west of Highland.

Edward Dean Johnson 54, of St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2017 at his home. He was born November 3, 1962 in St. Joseph, MO, son of the late Catherine and Roy Johnson. He served in the United States Army, and worked as a Union Labor. He enjoyed fishing, riding motorcycles, canoeing, and shooting pool, and was of the Pentecostal faith. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Roy “Buster” Johnson, Jr., and a sister, Karen Johnson. Daniel A. “Dan” Mehringer
1939-2017


HOLTON – Daniel A. “Dan” Mehringer, 78, of Holton, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the Banner Creek Reservoir west of Holton where he had been kayaking.

He was born February 27, 1939 in Garfield, Kansas, the son of Joe & Iva Bingaman Mehringer. He graduated from Kinsley High School in 1957. He attended Fort Hays State University and graduated in 1969.

Dan worked for the Larned State Hospital for 2 years prior to moving to Holton where he worked for SRS for 33 years, retiring in March, 2002.

He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, Holton Knights of Columbus Council No. 4219, James Gibbons 4th Degree Assembly No. 286 in Topeka, Jackson County Senior Citizen’s and served on several boards as a volunteer. Dan helped with the R.C.I.A. program at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Meriden. In 2010, he was awarded Volunteer of the Year for the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. He served on the Jackson County Development Council, was a trained volunteer for Jackson County Friends of Hospice, volunteered with Jackson County Head Start, Relay for Life, and was a cancer survivor. He helped with the local Community Dinners and was very active with Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on the Potawatomi Reservation.

Dan was a part of the Holton community for 47 years and was active volunteering and giving of his time to others and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He never failed to see the saint in the sinner. He was such an inspiration on how to live life and loved being outdoors whenever he could.

He married Lorena “Suzy” Balius on December 27, 1966 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook, Nebraska. She survives, of the home.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jim Mehringer, John Mehringer and Lawrence Mehringer, who died in a childhood accident, a sister-in-law, Mona Mehringer, and a nephew, Matthew Mehringer.

Other survivors include three sons, Chris Mehringer, McCook, NE, Stephen Mehringer (Corin), Kirksville, MO, and Mark Mehringer, Kansas City, MO; a brother, Richard Mehringer, Conway, CO; two sisters, Ann Van Nahmen, Kinsley and Kathryn Arney, Cedar Park, TX; two grandchildren, Levi & Eliana Mehringer, and a special friend of the family, Andrew Barkow.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 9th at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Shipshee Cemetery on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation. Dan will lie in state at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton where a Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Jackson County Friends of Hospice, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Dixie was a homemaker most of her life, and worked various jobs when she was younger.

Dianna loved spending time with her grandkids.

She received her Associates Degree in Accounting & Processing from Vatterott College. Nancy enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of South Park Christian Church. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, John & Vance Stinnett. David Lawrence Zishka, 40, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away, Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at his home in Leavenworth, KS.

David was born on July 12, 1976 in Atchison, the son of Lawrence and Barb (Funk) Zishka. David graduated from ACCHS in 1995 and then attended Fort Hays State College in Hays, KS for one year. David then completed two years of auto mechanic training, followed by a year and a half of electrician training, at the Northeast Kansas Area Vo-Tech in Atchison. David worked for almost eighteen years at MGP in Atchison as a warehouseman. David was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local #74D of Atchison. David always had a project to complete from working on cars or just repairing items around the house. David loved spending time with his family and children, especially the times they spent swimming at the pool.

David and Rebecca ‘Becky’ (Webster) Zishka have been together for 21 years and were united in marriage on April 15, 2011 in Leavenworth.

Survivors include David’s wife, Becky, and their two children, Trevor and Chelsea, of the home; his parents, Lawrence and Barb Zishka of Atchison; two brothers, Clint Zishka, Everest, KS and Daryl (Theresa) Zishka, Atchison; and grandmother, Helen Weishaar, Effingham.

ROSSVILLE – Mildred G. Ward, 90, formerly of Wichita, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born September 13, 1926 the daughter of Louis and Katherine Pierson Kishko.

Mildred worked as an administrative assistant for the State of Kansas Welfare Department for many years.

She married Steve Ward, Jr. on September 4, 1959 in Falls City, Nebraska. They were divorced.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, two brothers, Wendell Kishko and Wayne Kishko, and a half-brother, Philip Niles.

Survivors include ten nieces and nephews and one great niece, Hope Niles.

Michael D. “Mike” Bodenhausen, 64, of Muscotah, KS, died on Monday, May 29th, 2017 as the result of an ATV accident on the family farm.

Mike was born on March 4, 1953 in Horton, KS the son of Dale R. and Mary (Freeland) Bodenhausen. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1971 and from Kansas State University with a degree in Dairy Science in 1974. Mike had worked as a fieldman for the Holstein Association of America, and then as a classifier from 1975-1981. He was a farmer and dairyman in the Muscotah area and had taught dairy judging at K-State 2005-2006. Mr. Bodenhausen served as the 2nd District Atchison County Commissioner from 2012 – 2015. He was an active member of the Muscotah United Church where he had served as treasurer and as chairman of the board. He was a past president and member of the USD #377 School Board from 1987-1995. Mike also served as a director for the Kansas Dairy Association, and was named the Kansas State Dairy Leader of the Year in 2014. He was a past president of the Kansas Holstein Association, 1992-1993. Mr. Bodenhausen was presently working again as a classifier for the Holstein Association of America.

He was married to Linda Hines on Dec. 6, 1981 in Lancaster, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Ryan (Kayla) Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS., a daughter, Jeni (Bob) Hespe, Olathe, KS, his mother, Mary Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS, two brothers, Steven Bodenhausen, Horton, KS and Mark Bodenhausen, Muscotah, KS, two grandchildren, Brinley Bodenhausen, and Thomas “Tommy” Hespe. His father preceded him in death.

JoAnn Lawrence 86, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at a Saint Joseph, MO health care center. She was born February 1, 1931 in Rushville, MO, daughter of Ada and Charles Moberly. She graduated from Rushville high school in 1949 where she was an exceptional softball and volleyball player. She married Edward Lawrence on February 10, 1951 in Rushville, MO. JoAnn worked at Dillards & Penny’s as a Sales Clerk for many years. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. JoAnn loved cooking for her family and friends, and was a member of Rushville Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother in law, Patricia and Joe Thomas, and her father and mother in law, Edward & Christine Lawrence. Survivors include, husband, Edward Lawrence, Jr. of the home, sons, Chuck Lawrence of Tucson, AZ, and Kirk (Lorna) Lawrence of St. Louis, MO, a daughter, Sandra Flocks of Tuscon, AZ, 6, grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Rick Kerns, 63, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with gallbladder cancer on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at his home.
He was born August 29, 1953 in King City, Missouri, where he graduated from Union Star High School and later earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Wood Technology and Industrial Education.
He married Christine Sutton on May 15, 1982.
Mr. Kerns owned and operated Rick Kerns Millwork and Woodworking.
Rick was a member of Orchid Christian Church, Midwest Tool Collectors, Early American Industries Association, St. Joseph Woodworkers’ Guild and Greater Kansas City Pontiac Association.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eldon Francis Kerns; and brother-in-law, Ray Thompson.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Christine, of the home; mother, Viola Kerns, Union Star, Missouri; brother, Bob Kerns (Wendy), Hollister, Missouri; sister, Elizabeth Burks (Marvin), Union Star, Missouri; nephews, Travis Erisman (Tina) and Joshua Kerns (Tara); nieces, Tal Kroll (Robby), Melanie Davis and Megan Burks; sister-in-law, Sheila Thompson; and numerous great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

David “Tub” Eugene Hunt 70, of St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 at his home. He was born November 13, 1946 in St. Joseph, MO. He married Sharon Bennett on February 2, 1965, and they have celebrated 52 year together. He retired from Johnson Controls after 26 years of service. He loved to mushroom hunt, go fishing, and family get togethers. David was preceded in death by his mother, Isabelle Boyles, and his in-laws, John and Irene Bennett, and a great grandchild, Piper Keith. Violet Laquita (Cotter) Deatherage Uthe, 81, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care.
She was born July 7, 1935 to Marvin C. and Violet P (Gust) Cotter in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Laquita graduated from Benton High School where she was a member of T-Cinco Club. She then attended Saint Joseph Junior College where she was a cheerleader.
She married Billy Deatherage, Sr. and to that union four children were born, they later divorced. She married Bobby Uthe on August 15, 1976 and moved to Cameron, Missouri.
She was employed at the Midland Empire Girl Scout Council, as a Secretary for Wire Rope Corporation, Cameron Prison and as the Activities Director for Beehive.
Mrs. Uthe enjoyed being an active volunteer in the community. She was a Director of Camp for Needy Girls and started Meals on Wheels in St. Joseph.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi International and Sweet Adelines with her daughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Uthe; step sons, Keith and Kevin Uthe; and stepfather, Lawrence Johns.
Survivors include her daughters, Rhonda Lewis and Regina Fujan (Byron); sons, Billy Deatherage II (Paula), and Bart Deatherage; nine grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Jennings; brother, Ronald Cotter (Frances); and step mother, Frances L. Cotter.

She was born October 7, 1928 in St. Joseph, MO, daughter of the late Vita and Bernard Kempf. She graduated from Central High School in 1946. She was a florist, and worked at the St. Joseph Hospital and Heartland Hospitals in the housekeeping department, retiring after 15 years of service. She worked hard and enjoyed garage sales, collecting coins & jewelry, but most especially she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She attended St. James Catholic Church and Faith United Baptist Church. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Terance Farley, daughter Margaret Huber, and granddaughter, Jana Hunter. Lee C Arensberg, 90, of Vintage Park, in Atchison, KS passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Atchison Hospital. Lee received exemplary care by all of the wonderful and dedicated staff at Vintage Park and while at the Atchison Hospital. Special thanks also to Connie McRae, Jacob Campbell, Patty Housh and the St. Croix Hospice staff, as well as everyone at Lopez de Mexico (Anne, Amanda, Debbie and Presley) for helping enrich his later life with family and friends.

Lee Curran Arensberg was born on June 12, 1926 in Atchison Kansas, the son of Lee Charles and Agnes (Curran) Arensberg. Lee saw Naval Service in World War II, on the USS Destroyer, Henry Laub 1944 – 1946, and following his service in World War II, he attended and graduated from Benedictine College with a degree in business and accounting.
While going to Benedictine College, Lee started working part-time at Howard & Kohler Shoe Store starting in 1947. Upon graduating from Benedictine-Lee, his brother (Jack) and mother (Agnes) purchased the store and established Arensberg Shoe Store in 1953,with a later second location in Lawrence and which served the Atchison community for over 50 years until 2002.
Throughout his career, Lee was involved in many community clubs and organizations including the Atchison Chamber of Commerce, Fellowship Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks, American Legion, VFW, Bellevue and Pineview Country Clubs and was a lifelong member of St. Benedict’s church where he participated in Perpetual Adoration and was a Eucharistic Minister to shut-ins.
Lee was known for his keen sense of humor, enjoyed a (not-so occasional) beverage or 2-or maybe 3 and always liked to have a good time. In addition to his intense walking routines, over planting and (over-treating) numerous oak varieties for himself, neighbors and friends, Lee also enjoyed fly-fishing with his family in Crested Butte Colorado every summer-starting at a very young age with his parents and family.
On Nov. 4, 1952 he married the love of his life, Luetta P. Henry. They had a wonderful life together and he will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years, Luetta Pauline (“Lulu”) Arensberg; sons, Lee C. Arensberg (Dan), Mark W. Arensberg (Renny) and James A. Arensberg (Renee); and daughter, Janet G. Arensberg; five grandchildren, Mark C. Arensberg (Katie), Elise C. Arensberg-Byrom (Casey), Briana Arensberg-Smith (Cameron), Annmarie C. Arensberg, Aidan J Arensberg and three great grandchildren (Hudson and Georgia Arensberg and Lincoln Smith just born 5-23-17) as well as his brother, Jack Arensberg (Mary) and sister, Gay Lacy (Vincent). Florence was born on April 1, 1923 in Farmington, KS the daughter of Harry and Caroline R. (Bodenhausen) Schrader. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1940.
She worked part time for 15 years in the Atchison County Extension Office and worked as a secretary for Atchison County Noxious Weed Department for 16 years. Florence was a member of the Effingham Union Church, a member of the Sara Circle, the 48er’s Club, the Senior Citizens, Effingham, and the Sunny Hill Thimble Club. She was active as superintendent of the Open Class Foods for the Atchison County Fair for many years. Florence enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and cooking. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was married to George (Junior) Hinz, Jr. on January 1, 1943 at Camp Creek United Methodist Church. Mr. Hinz preceded her in death on November 10, 1994. Survivors include a son, Don (Sara) Hinz, Effingham, KS, two daughters, Mary Kay (Danny) Barnett, Effingham, KS, and Carolyn (Mike) Turvey, Shawnee, KS, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, two brothers, Floyd and Edwin Schrader, and two infant granddaughters preceded her in death.

Herman R. Kuhnert, 92 of Temple, TX died Tuesday, March 28th, 2017 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX.

Herman was born on April 19, 1924 in Bendena, KS, to Herman L. and Moretta (Spencer) Kuhnert. He married Irene Reder on September 6, 1943 in Bakersfield, CA while Mr. Kuhnert was serving with the 27th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Ft. Bliss, TX. He was eventually transferred to Camp Irwin, CA and was sent to Europe during World War II and served in England, Holland and Germany. He saw his most intense combat during the Battle of the Bulge in 1943 and 1944. His unit was separated from American Forces behind German lines. He was eventually discharged from U.S. Army in 1946. After returning to civilian life Mr. Kuhnert was employed by Pillsbury Mills in Atchison, KS and eventually purchased a farm in the Spring Grove community in 1950. He started a farming career in the Troy area until 1961. He truly found his calling shortly thereafter and began a sales career in the agriculture and oil business, which he pursued until his retirement in 1978. He was founder and owner of H & B Supply, Inc., in Temple, TX in February 1977. H & B focused on the lubricant and filter market in Texas and eventually expanded to cover the entire state of Texas as well as surrounding states.
He and Irene were married for 42 years until her death in May of 1985. He is survived by a son, Robert Kuhnert of McKinney, and a daughter Linda Fridell, Temple, his grandsons, Michael Sumner and Warren Harmon, granddaughters, Alison Fortson, Amy McGinnis and Laurie Mershon, brother-in-law, Alvin Wehking, Atchison, KS and his eleven great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, LaVon Barnes and sister Edna Wehking.

Ilene M. Lundy
1918-2017


Hiawatha, KS

Ilene M. Lundy, 99, formerly of Hiawatha, died at Midlands Hospital, Papillion, Nebraska, Friday morning, May 26, 2017.

Ilene was born northeast of Falls city, Nebraska, January 25, 1918, to the late Lawrence and Edith Gerwick Bauman and was a lifelong resident of southeast Nebraska/Northeast Kansas areas. She graduated from Falls City High School. She later attended and graduated from Platt Gard Business College in St. Joseph, Missouri. She went to work for Triple AAA Office in Falls City, where she was employed until the time of her marriage.

In October, 1940, she married William I. Lundy of Shubert, Nebraska. They lived in Hiawatha, Kansas all of their married life where he worked in the engineering department for Gas Service Co. until retiring. She worked for some time at the Hiawatha Daily World, the Soil Conservation Service. In December 1952, she went to work for the Kansas Power and Light Company, where she worked until she retired January 31, 1981. He died November 5, 2011.

Mrs. Lundy was a longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha; and the Altar Society of the Church. She enjoyed embroidery and making doll clothes for her grand-daughters. She loved playing cards and belonged to several card clubs over the years. She taught all her grandchildren card and board games and spent hours playing with them.

Survivors include her children Judith Welton (Myron) of LaVista, Nebraska; a son James (Dorothy) Lundy of Minot, North Dakota; a sister Mary Lou Barrow of Lodi, California; grandchildren: Craig Lundy, Philip Lundy, Sarah Holtzmann (Patrick), Jennifer Sheeran (Chris), Mariah Crouser (Mark) Shannah Portwood (Nathan) great-grandchildren: Kieran Lundy, Jason, Savannah, Elizabeth, and Christopher Holtzmann, Addison and Liam Sheeran, Crosby, Wrenna and Maylee Crouser, Alexi and Livia Portwood.

Ilene was also preceded in death by a brother Sylvester Bauman, and a sister Lorraine Albert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon Thursday, June 1, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Hiawatha, with Father Dan Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery.

A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, with the family visiting with friends following rosary until 8 p.m.

Delmas Higdon, Jr., 90, Easton, Missouri passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at his home.
He was born in Daviess County, Missouri to Delphin Delmas Hidgon, Sr. and Gladys M. Berry.
Delmas married Winifred Burton on August 7, 1948, she preceded him in death in 2011.
He purchased the family farm in 1957 and that was his life’s passion. Delmas was a member of the McCarthy Baptist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, farming and current events.
Delmas was also preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Donald “Max” Higdon.

Joanne Lee Greiner McGlade went home to be with the Lord on May 23, 2017.
She was born on June 18, 1933, in Dodge City KS, on her way home to El Dorado KS, where she grew up with her parents, Lawrence Henry Greiner and Eunice May McNeal Greiner.
She was welcomed in Heaven by her heavenly Father and His Son, as well as her parents and her husband, James W. McGlade, who went home in 1997.
She is survived and sorely missed by her daughter, Darci McGlade Jones, and her husband, Tony Jones, of Topeka KS; her son, Kevin Alan McGlade, and his wife, Mary Price McGlade, of St. Joseph MO; her granddaughter, Madison Rene’ McGlade; her daughter, Patricia McGlade West, and her husband, Robert West; her grandsons, Aaron and Philip West, and their families; her son, Jerry McGlade; her grandsons, Jathan and Christopher McGlade.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Wichita KS through the late 1960s. She was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph MO and Canyon Del Oro Baptist Church in Oro Valley AZ, where she made her home from 2001 to 2016.
In November, 2016, she returned to the Midwest to be near her family. They are very thankful for this special time they were able to spend together.
She was very grateful for the special care she received and the love she felt from the staffs of Atria Assisted Living, Rolling Hills Health and Rehab, and Great Lakes Caring Hospice.

Lila “Little Lolly Pop” Jean Knox 85, of Faucett, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017 in Saint Joseph, MO health care center, she was born May 2, 1932 in Dearborn, MO, to the late Helen and Charles Bowles, she graduated from Dearborn High School and was a homemaker and excellent cook. She enjoyed taking care of her “Special son, Bobby” for 55 years, and taking care of her bushes and flowers throughout her yard. She could make anything grow, and loved to play bingo. Lila was a member of Faucett Baptist Church. She was preceded in death her parents, a son, Robert “Bobby” Knox, husband, Walter Knox, son in law, Bill Dunham, brother, George Bowles, and Billy Bowles, half brother, Jim Mullendor, half sister, Ruth Read. He graduated from Central High School, and attended Missouri Western State College for 2 years. He was a welder in the farming community, and was known as “Mr. Overhead” as a Welder. He served in the United States Army, and was a member of the Copeland Baptist Church. Randy enjoyed bush craft, hunting and fishing. He was a beekeeper and made honey.Randy was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Richardson, mother, Laveda Phillippe, and a daughter, Margaret I Richardson. David “Doc” Allen Roberts 67, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at his home. He was born August 26, 1949 in Independence , MO, son of the late Dorothy and Jim Roberts. He worked for Union Local 1290 construction union. He spent his youth in California and was raised by relatives in the St. Joseph area. He enjoyed fishing, target practicing, riding motorcycles and camping, and he was a and Christian. David was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, wife, Sally Roberts of the home, daughter, Melissa Roberts Sewell (Jason), Northridge, OH, step children: Zachary Fetty, and Rebecca (Jerry) Senter, 2 grandchildren, Emily & Jason, step grandchildren, J.D., Elizabeth, Sydney, and Aspen, as well as numerous cousins and friends.
Mr. Roberts will be cremated under the care of the Rupp Funeral Home, with a private family service to be conducted at a later date.

Norma Jean Klein 87, of Saint Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday May 24, 2017 in a Saint Joseph health care center. She was born November 17, 1929 in Holt County, Missouri daughter of the late Nora & Earl Hines. She graduated from Mound City high school in 1947, and worked at Meyers-Watson & Butcharts as a floral designer. She enjoyed crafts, painting saw blades, saws, and was a very talented floral designer. Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Cecil Klein, and her parents. She is survived by sons, Kerry (Patsy) Klein, Saint Joseph, MO, and Nelson Reed (Patricia) Klein, Conroe, TX, and a sister, Janice (Gene) Nottingham, Kaw City, OK. A joint-graveside memorial service with her husband Earl will be held 10:00 AM Monday June 12, 2017, at the Leavenworth National Cemetery, with Military honors. Herman R. Kuhnert, 92 of Temple, TX died Tuesday, March 28th, 2017 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX.
Memorial services will be 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 27th, 2017 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS with Rev. Ben Ockree, Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Herman was born on April 19, 1924 in Bendena, KS, to Herman L. and Moretta (Spencer) Kuhnert. He married Irene Reder on September 6, 1943 in Bakersfield, CA while Mr. Kuhnert was serving with the 27th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Ft. Bliss, TX. He was eventually transferred to Camp Irwin, CA and was sent to Europe during World War II and served in England, Holland and Germany. He saw his most intense combat during the Battle of the Bulge in 1943 and 1944. His unit was separated from American Forces behind German lines. He was eventually discharged from U.S. Army in 1946. After returning to civilian life Mr. Kuhnert was employed by Pillsbury Mills in Atchison, KS and eventually purchased a farm in the Spring Grove community in 1950. He started a farming career in the Troy area until 1961. He truly found his calling shortly thereafter and began a sales career in the agriculture and oil business, which he pursued until his retirement in 1978. He was founder and owner of H & B Supply, Inc., in Temple, TX in February 1977. H & B focused on the lubricant and filter market in Texas and eventually expanded to cover the entire state of Texas as well as surrounding states.
He and Irene were married for 42 years until her death in May of 1985. He is survived by a son, Robert Kuhnert of McKinney, and a daughter Linda Fridell, Temple, his grandsons, Michael Sumner and Warren Harmon, granddaughters, Alison Fortson, Amy McGinnis and Laurie Mershon, a niece Patricia (Charles) Begesse, brother-in-law, Alvin Wehking, Atchison, KS and his eleven great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, LaVon Barnes and sister Edna Wehking.

Troy, Kansas Russell “Dean” Horner, 79, of Troy, Kansas passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at his home. Dean was born on September 17, 1937 in Robinson, Kansas to Charles & Daisy (Shaiffer) Horner.

He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, Troy American Legion Post #55 & UTU. Dean retired as a Conductor for the UP Railroad.

Dean married Marilyn Thompson on August 9, 1969. She survives of the home.

William “Bill” Byron Coder
1935-2017


William Coder passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He spent
his last days at his ranch in Saint Joseph, surrounded by
family.
William Byron Coder was born in Saint Joseph, MO, to
William L and Rose Harris Coder on March 19, 1935. They
precede him in death, along with sisters Aline Reeder and
Rosemary Klamm, and brothers, Roy Coder and Gary Coder.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce Caw
Coder, his son, William Charles Coder, and daughter Cheryl
JoAnn Coder Adams (Terry).
William loved and cherished five grandchildren:
William Justin Adams (Jamie), William Larry Coder,
Christian Charles Coder (Renee), Brook JoAnn Miller
(Brett), Brett Groves Coder (Megan), and 14 great-
grandchildren: Christian Coder, Corbin Adams, Lexi Adams,
Braden Miller, Jackson Coder, Haylee Coder, Brogan Miller,
Breah Miller, Brody Coder, Taegan Adams, Sophie Coder, Levi
Coder, Kinsley Coder, and Jase Coder.
He is also survived by a sister, Sandra Coder, and
brothers Richard Coder (Ruth) and Ronald Coder (Gail).
Above all else, William was devoted to the Lord,
living his life through Christ. William also cared deeply
for his family. He was an extremely caring and loving
husband, and attentive father. He found his greatest joy in
entertaining his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
built his ranch as a place for his loved ones to congregate
and enjoy being together – fishing, hunting, and listening
to his stories of cowboys, outlaws, and a whole cast of
intriguing characters.
William attended Central High School and was active in
ROTC. He attained the rank of Cadet Colonel over all the
high schools in Saint Joseph. He was also a Gold Coat Club
member of Missouri Western State University.
Upon graduation in 1953, William followed his father
in the homebuilding business, becoming a bricklayer. He and
Joyce married on May 25, 1954 at the RLDS Church in Saint
Joseph. After eight years in construction, William went on
to join the Missouri State Highway Patrol on July 2, 1961,
where he served for eight years. He left as a corporal, on
February 28, 1969.
In 1976, William was a founding owner of the Car City
Motor Company, Inc., where he found success in the car
business until he retired from daily operations with the
company in 1998. During that time, he was the Director of
the Missouri Automobile Dealers Association for Northwest
Missouri, and earned numerous accolades from Chrysler.
William was a member of the Saint Joseph Scottish
Rite, the Masonic Saint Joseph Lodge 78, and Moila Shrine
Temple, where he served in the Ambassador Group and the
Mounted Horse Patrol. He also raised Missouri Foxtrotter
horses and Paint horses, and was a member of the Missouri
Foxtrotter Association, a corporate sponsor of Ducks
Unlimited and the Missouri Paint Horse Association.
He was also devoted to many other causes, especially
those who helped children in need, such as St Jude Hospital
for Children, Shrine Temple Hospital for Children, and
Noyes Home for Children in Saint Joseph.

Linville Sherman “Linny” Wilkinson IV, 24, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017.
He was born April 20, 1993 to Linville III and Rhonda Wilkinson.
Linville was a graduate of East Buchanan High School with nine years of perfect attendance. He coached basketball in Stewartsville for four years. He was also a member of the FFA for four years. Linville was the Sergeant of Arms for St. Joseph Rollin’ Three’s Motorcycle Club.
He enjoyed drag races and car shows. Linville spent lots of time with family and had a very strong work ethic. He loved his horse, Zeus, and the time they spent together.
Linville was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Vernal Bartley; grandmothers, Marie Wilkinson and Maxine Wilkinson; paternal great grandfather, Linville Sherman Wilkinson, Sr.; maternal great grandfather, Jack Lewis; and favorite uncle, Dion Taylor.

She was a 1967 graduate of Central High School, then later graduated from Missouri Western State University in 1971 and went on to attend St. Mary’s Hospital School of Medical Technology and received her degree.
Norma was devoted to the Catholic faith and recently became Catholic. She was a wonderful grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Marjorie was born on September 1, 1926 in White Cloud, Kansas the daughter of Charles B. and Jennie B. (Thomas) Cash. She attended Atchison Public Schools and had worked for years as a stock clerk for the former F.W. Woolworth’s Store and S.S. Kresge’s, Atchison. Mrs. Wells’s joy in life was being a wife and mother. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, was an active member of the Priscilla Guild at Trinity, and attended Morning Break, ladies Bible Study Group at church. She had also helped by calling families to help with funeral dinners and enjoyed sports and “John Wayne “movies. Marjorie was known by many as a wonderful cook and a fantastic dessert maker.

She was married to Lohman C. “Bill” Wells, on April 28, 1945 in Leavenworth, KS. He preceded her in death in July, 1990. Survivors include a son, Terry C. and daughter-in-law Joan Wells, Lawrence, KS, and nephew Dan Wells, nieces Pamela Gholson, Georgena King, and Candace Tellez. Darell Lee, 59, Peabody, Kansas passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017.
He was born July 2, 1957 in Kansas City Missouri.
He was a graduate of Carson High School, Carson, California.
Mr. Lee was in an auto accident in his younger years, but still managed to do a lot. He volunteered at Access TV in Salina, Kansas at which he produced, directed and edited. He was a member of OCCK and Community Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Eugene Lee.

Gary Mac McDonald, 73, Agency, Missouri, went home to his heavenly Father on May 16, 2017.
He was born to Raymond and Marcella McDonald in Kearny, Nebraska on June 11, 1943.
Gary worked construction his entire life and retired from the Operating Engineers Local Union 101 in St. Joseph. From there he opened a bait and tackle store. He purchased the Atomic Bait and enjoyed making bait and experimenting with new recipes. Gary loved to talk to other fisherman and listen to their “fish” stories. Growing up he loved horses, fishing and hunting and on the weekends you could usually find him at the lake lot with his line in the water. He loved to tell stories of his own about when he was growing up, even the ones that got him into trouble. Gary was a true family man and when they say that anyone can be a father, it takes someone special to be a daddy. He was definitely our daddy. May you dance in the heavens and rejoice in his love. God bless you, husband, daddy, and papa. We will miss you, but one day will see you again.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joseph; sister, Marlene; and granddaughter, Jacquelyn Furbee.

Joe was born on May 1, 1925 in Atchison KS, the son of Joseph J. Sr., and Mary M. (Ruhlman) Smith. He attended St. Benedict grade school. Joseph was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #723 of Atchison. He enjoyed his family, golfing and gardening.

Joseph married Marcella Hawk on August 10, 1968 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, she survives of the home. Patricia Lockwood Snowden (Kinney)

Patricia Lockwood Snowden, Kansas University lost one of it’s biggest arm chair basketball fans on May 17, 2017.
Through the years Pat loved cheering on her team and didn’t hesitate to write to the current coach if she saw something that didn’t meet with her approval. Another one of her interests was the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, where she served as president for many years. She was a member of the Auxiliary for over 56 years. At 93 Pat was still driving to the thrift store on Monday’s to help out in the mornings. Pat was born in Atchison on August 22, 1923 and early on moved with her parents to Kansas City. She went to Kansas University, was a Pi Beta Phi and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her interest in art continued through the years and she was on the Kansas Art Commission for four years. She was a member of the Governors Council of the Arts for two years. Pat attended Sister Helen’s and Dennis McCarthy’s art classes at Benedictine College in her senior.

March 5, 1945 was the day that Pennell Snowden and Patricia Lockwood were married at the Episcopal Church in Atchison. They celebrated their marriage for 61 years, Pen passed away in 2006. Pat continued to live in the home they built together, in 1951. This was the family gathering place for her four children and their spouses, her nine grand children and her 16 great grand children. There will be a Celebration of Life for relatives and close friends at 2:30 on June 4 at the home.

Marion R. “Bob” Peterson, 89, Clarksdale, Missouri passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at a local healthcare facility.
He was born July 23, 1927 in Bendena, Kansas to Marion, Sr. and Cora Peterson.
Marion married Florence Schneider on March 19, 1948; they were married for 69 years.
He was a lifelong crop and dairy farmer.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Jerry and Melvin Lee; brother, Chris; sisters Mary Vavra and Rose Shifflett.
Survivors include wife, Florence; son, Larry Peterson (Teggy), Clarksdale, Missouri; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Farewell Services 10:00 A.M. Monday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather with friends 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Elwood J. “Skeeter” Chilson

HOYT – Elwood J. “Skeeter” Chilson, 80, of Hoyt, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, May 19, 2017 at his home.

He was born November 2, 1936 at McPherson, the son of Jerrold and Elsie Beuhler Chilson. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1955 to 1958.

Skeeter was a welder by trade, having worked for various companies.

He married Cindy Myers on July 16, 1980 at Salina. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors a son, Nathaniel “Nate” (Kathy) Chilson, Arlington, KS and a daughter, Dawn (Quentin) Moeder, Topeka.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Hoyt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Heart of Jackson Humane Society, and may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt, P.O. Box 280, Hoyt, KS 66440

Larry Wilkening
1937-2017

MAYETTA – Larry Wilkening, 80, of Mayetta, died Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

He was born April 4, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Raymond and Lucille Wilkening.

Larry had worked at various jobs before joining the police department in Elmhurst, IL. After moving to Kansas he worked at several different places before starting with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, where he became Corrections Captain at the jail. He had taken a law enforcement class at Washburn University.

He married Elizabeth Ann Heath on May 8, 1970 in Illinois. She survives, of the home.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Other survivors include two sisters, Linda Hough, Elmhurst, IL, and Lisa Ramos, Lombard, IL and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23rd at the Potawatomi United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Mayetta Cemetery. Larry will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. Monday until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hoyt where family and friends will meet from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Memorials are suggested to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, and may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, PO Box 280, Hoyt, 66440.

Jerliyah Y-Eair Ford

Jerliyah Y-Eair Ford was born and passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
Survivors include her parents, Jer Orlando Ford II and Jaliyah Take-Y Wash; grandmothers, Debbie Brown and Traci Wash.

Grace L. Hull

Troy, Kansas – Grace L. (Wiedmer) Hull, 89, of Troy, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at her home.

Born in rural Troy on April 14, 1928, Grace lived in the Troy community her entire life. She was a graduate of Troy High School, was a member of the former Burr Oak Baptist Church, and later attended the First Baptist Church of Troy.

Mrs. Hull had been employed several years as the Deputy Clerk of the District Court in Troy before later becoming a full-time homemaker.

On May 13, 1951 she married Hillman Hull. He survives of the home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Alvera (Laipple) Wiedmer; three brothers, Albert, Charles, and Hubert Wiedmer; and four sisters, Estella Brenner, Scevilla Burroughs, Gwendoline Elliott, and Bernice Edwards.

Additional survivors: Son, David Hull of Troy, Kansas;
Daughter, Pamela Pickerell (Jim) of Troy, Kansas;
Grandchildren, Jared Pickerell of Troy, Kansas;
Jena Williams (Tyler) of Hiawatha, Kansas;
Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Janice Louise Bontrager

Janice Louise Wykert Bontrager passed away on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017. She was born on October 4th, 1935 in Hoyt, Kansas. She is survived by her husband Kenneth Bontrager, Charlotte, NC, and her four children, Mark(Cathy), Arlington, VA, Kim (Mike), Charlotte, NC, Cathey(Harwell), Pinehurst, NC, and Kristy (Steve), Leawood, KS, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the Hoyt Cemetery on Friday, May 26th at 2:00 p.m. A reception at the Hoyt Community Center will be held immediately following the Service.
