Michael Julian Huffer
1947-2017

Born on September 16, 1947, Michael Julian Huffer, also known as, “Mike” or “Iron Mike,” as he laughingly nicknamed himself passed away suddenly on Friday night, September 22, 2017. Mike was a simple man. He was content with very little and always happiest when visiting, laughing with friends and family and playing music. At a very early age in life, Mike recognized he was blessed with the gift of music and this became his passion. He completed his studies and earned a degree in sociology at Missouri Western State University. Although, his one true passion in life would always be his love for music and entertainment. He played piano, bass guitar, B3 Hammond organ, and had a strong voice that barely needed a microphone. Some of his favorite musicians were Nat King Cole, Louis Prima, The Blue Brothers, Louie Armstrong, James Brown, Johnny Mathis, and a countless number of old blues and jazz bands. Mike will be remembered for his unique musical talent and his ability to connect with people and develop friendships everywhere he went. He was also a man of God who embraced people of all religions. He regularly attended both a Jewish synagogue and played in a band at a Christian church. He had a heart miles deep; he kept a prayer journal with long lists of people that he’d pray for every morning. He knew the power of prayer and prioritized it in his life. Mike’s daughter Sarah was the “apple of his eye” whom he cherished and passed along his gifts of music, generosity, and love of people. He was always quick to brag about Sarah because of the extraordinary amount of love he had, and will continue to have for her. Mike treated his son-in-law Seth as if he were his own, and he was overwhelmed with joy when his grandson Nixon Jude came into this world on June 26, 2015. He purchased a children’s book club membership and to this day, Sarah and Seth receive a monthly book addressed to “Master Nixon Hobart.” This is just one of many examples of how Mike expressed his kindness, and love to those close to him. Mike was one of 9 siblings in total. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tura Fanning and Forest Huffer; brothers David Huffer, Lewis Mules; and sisters Joy Homan, Jeanette Kontomitras, and Carmen Huffer. Survivors include his daughter Sarah Hobart, son-in-law Seth, grandson Nixon Jude, sister Deanna Potts, brothers John Huffer, Thomas Huffer, numerous cousins, nieces, and his “honorary granddaughter” Paige Schubert. Elva Low
1933-2017

Elva Mae Low, 83, of Winchester, KS, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at the F.W. Huston Senior Center in Winchester surrounded by her family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, September 11, 2017 at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in the Mooney Creek Community of Winchester. Burial will follow in the Nortonville Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Sunday, at the church with a parish rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. Memorial contributions are suggested to the FW Huston Medical Center, FW Huston Senior Living Center, Hospital Hannah’s, Nortonville First Responders, Winchester First Responders, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, or the Jefferson County Hospice. The O’Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville is entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.

Elva Mae Spencer was born on November 4, 1933 in Horton, KS, the daughter of Albert M. and Frances M. (Schuetz) Spencer. Elva graduated from Nortonville High School and she began her work career as a telephone operator in Nortonville. Elva then worked at Thriftway in Atchison in the late 1960’s before going to work for Bell Telephone in Atchison around 1970 and continued to work for Bell Telephone in Kansas City and Topeka until 1985. Elva went to work for Hord Communications and was their store manager in Leavenworth until her retirement in 1998. During the 1970’s, Elva also sold Avon and Amway products. After retiring, Elva briefly drove the Senior Citizen bus; worked for the JCN School District as a substitute custodian; and she and her husband, John, cleaned the Mooney Creek Church for many years. Elva also had a job of cleaning the Easton Bank every Saturday morning. After a while, Elva hired an assistant (several different high school students) who would do the ‘heavy’ things so she could keep her job; as much for the money as for the social part of visiting with the employees and the camaraderie they shared. With great sadness Elva’s health forced her to retire in 2016.

Elva has always been a staunch supporter of the F.W. Huston Medical Center and Dr. Huston. When Elva heard talk of the foundation board opening a hospital thrift store in Winchester, she jumped at the opportunity to volunteer and was instrumental in getting it opened. Elva was devoted to the thrift store “Hospital Hannah’s”. Wednesday was her day to ‘work’, but gladly filled in other days also. She took home items to clean, wash, repair, etc. – so they could be sold to make money for the hospital. Elva was always checking out other thrift stores to get new ideas for Hannah’s. Elva received an award in 2016 for volunteering 1700 hours. With great sadness her health forced her to stop volunteering in the fall of 2016.

Elva was able to stay in the home that she and John worked so hard for until a series of health issues in September 2016. Elva then moved to the Jefferson Apartments in Winchester and in January 2017 to the FW Huston Senior Living Center after a diagnosis of stage four cancer. Throughout each move, Elva decided to make the best of it and made new friends and enjoyed new adventures. Many of Elva’s friends commented on her positive, upbeat attitude, sense of humor and love of life.

Elva and John Low were married on August 14, 1951. Elva was preceded in death by her husband, John on June 8, 2005; her parents, Albert and Frances Spencer; and an infant sister, Alberta.

Elva leaves behind a daughter, Tammy (David) Noll, Mooney Creek; son, J.R. (Diane) Low, Nortonville; five grandsons, Justin (Tiffany) Noll, Brandon (Laura) Noll, Alex (Traci) Noll, Austin (Emily) Low, and Aaron (Cheyenne) Low; two granddaughters, Ashley (fiancée, Bobby Gupta) Noll and Amber Low; fourteen great grandchildren; brother, Kenny (Janiece) Spencer, Hiawatha, KS; three nieces and numerous cousins.

Donna Mae Glenski
1929-2017

On the morning of Monday, September 4, 2017, Donna Mae Glenski, 88, was welcomed into Heaven. She was surrounded by her family holding the hands of her loved ones.
Donna was born on May 6, 1929, to James and Claudia Weddle in Stewartsville, Mo. She was the youngest child of nine, with four sisters and four brothers. Growing up on a farm during the Great Depression taught Donna the lifelong value of resiliency, as well as how to enjoy the small things in life and trust her common sense.
In 1939, Donna’s family moved to St. Joseph, Mo., where she would spend the rest of her life. She attended Central High School, graduating in 1947. Donna was an accomplished high school athlete playing on championship teams in basketball, volleyball and field hockey. She also was a band majorette while at Central, a talent she began to exhibit in middle school.
In 1942, she met her true love Joseph “Joe” Anthony Glenski at South Park softball field. They’ve been inseparable ever since. They officially wed on January 27, 1951, in St. Joseph, Mo., and were married for 66 years. Before Donna began a full-time career as a homemaker, she could be found at Jerry Anne’s Cafeteria, greeting customers with her warm smile.
Donna loved country music. She was an incredible dancer and could be found square and line dancing across the Midwest with Joe by her side. They were members of the YMCA Promenaders and the Pony Express Kickers in St. Joseph and the Savannah Sashayers in Savannah, Mo.
As much as Donna loved dancing, her true passion was being a mother to her ten children – six girls and four boys. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family, teaching each of her children, through example, how to be kind, hardworking and trustworthy. Donna found joy in caring and cooking for her family and always managed to keep a very busy house clean.
Donna was preceded in death by her daughter Patricia Ellen Glenski, whom she is now holding in her arms again. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father, her sisters Marguerite, Claudine, Frances and Lois, her brothers Delbert, Vernon, Hubert and Wesley, her grandson Jamie Joseph “JJ” Pawlowski, her great-grandson Gabriel Beasley and great-granddaughter Addilea Swift.

She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Donna is now dancing with God in Heaven, where her loving mother greeted her with open arms.
