Classes begin soon and bus drivers around the area participated in training this week in St. Joseph.

According to Apple Bus Area Regional Manager Kim Green, 120 bus drivers from around the area participated in the back-to-school training Monday and Tuesday at Hillyard Technical Center.

Linda McDowell with Apple Bus Company said the training covered a variety of everyday and emergency situations.

“(We) make sure they’re doing their backing right, their back tail swings, we’re doing emergency evacuations, we’re doing the school bus stops,” McDowell said. “It’s to make the drivers aware of the oncoming year, just a little bit of what we’re working with on an everyday basis.”

McDowell said the training drills cover situations such as emergency evacuations.

We show them emergency exits, we show them exits on top, we show them the radio, how to use it, all the emergency windows, just show them how to get on and off so we know how to do it so we can tell our students,” McDowell said.

McDowell said classroom training over the two days included new driver orientation, refresher courses, information on insurance and more.

According to Green, drivers must complete eight hours of safety training per year to keep their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Classes for the St. Joseph School District begin August 16th.

Several animals taken from home after call from concerned citizen

St. Joseph Animal Control and Rescue took several animals from a St. Joseph home on Monday.

According to St. Joseph Animal Shelter Humane Educator Jenna Keyes, Animal Control received a call in the afternoon from a concerned citizen.

“They were concerned for the welfare of the animals on the property,” Keyes said. “Our officers got to the property, they as well had concerns. Upon further investigation, getting into the home, we did end up impounding several animals which are now at the shelter.”

Keyes said the owner did sign a release on all the animals.

“So those animals are now in our possession and we’re just working hard to get them back to healthy, getting them in good condition, so we are working on getting them all checked out by a veterinarian,” Keyes said. “Once they have passed through health and behavior inspections, then we will go and look toward adopting those animals out.”

Keyes said they are not yet sure on the total number of animals found at the house but they took in several cats, dogs and smaller pets including reptiles.

Man dies in attic after running from deputies

A 52-year-old St. Joseph man died in an attic after attempting to hide from deputies.

According to Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett, at 4:20 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to an uninhabited house on MacKenzie Drive after receiving a call from the realtor assigned to the house who noticed two men on the property.

Puett said the men appeared to be attempting to burglarize the house.

When deputies arrived, they made contact with one of the men in the front yard. After discovering he had an arrest warrant, they took the man into custody.

The other man went back into the house. After calling for additional units, deputies entered the house and discovered the man in a crawl space attic above the garage.

Puett said the man was unresponsive when deputies found him and later determined to be deceased.

Puett said they are awaiting autopsy results and the incident is still under investigation.

Back to school shopping kicks off at Grace House

Back to School shopping kicked off at Grace House in St. Joseph Tuesday morning.

The three week shopping event provides school supplies and more for students in need.

Ruth Costello is the owner of the Grace House which began almost 12 years ago.

Costello said they serve around 800 people a month at the free thrift store including seniors, children and adults with disabilities. Costello said the next two to three weeks, however, are just for kids.

“They get two outfits, new underwear, new socks, if they desperately need a pair of shoes and we can tell by looking at them, we try to find them a pair of shoes,” Costello said. “We have a little over 400 shoes that we’ve given to kids who have signed up way back in March and April that are getting As and Bs. If they get As and Bs on their report card, they get a new pair of shoes and that’s their reward, so they’ve earned the shoe, not just been handed a shoe.”

Costello said their goal is to help students feel confident when they head back to school.

“When they go there and they’re wearing new stuff and nice stuff and some of them with a brand new pair of shoes, they start off the year right and the teacher doesn’t know who’s very poor or very rich,” Costello said.

According to Costello, Tuesday morning they served over 350 students.

Costello said they do need more donations of school supplies and especially backpacks as they ran out Tuesday morning. For more information, click here.
