School and community gardens program in the running to win funds

St. Joseph School DistBefore voting in the general election on November 8th, area residents can vote to help a gardening and cooking program in the St. Joseph School District.

Mosaic Life Care, along with the St. Joseph School District, was chosen as one of the finalists as part of the Neighborhood Assist Program through State Farm. Over 2,000 people applied for the opportunity for their cause to win $25,000. Mosaic Team Leader of Community Health Marcy George said their cause made it to the top 200. George said their cause is the school and community gardens and the cooking classes that go with them.

“Drew Bouge is our Youth Health Coordinator and he is our liaison with the school district,” George said. “We have school and community gardens currently at eight schools and Drew also teaches healthy cooking classes, called Kids in the Kitchen. We would really like to expand to two more community gardens and expand cooking classes to possibly as many as four or five schools. We were looking for some funding (and) it was just a great opportunity that this should come about because this was the kind of project they were interested in, it was community development and so I applied and now we’re in the voting phase.”

George said if they win, the funds will go toward garden equipment and more.

“The gardens require fencing, they require a tiller, there are hoses, that sort of thing, and the main cost for the cooking classes actually is the food,” George said. “We’re trying to teach kids how to eat healthier so we actually prepare the food in these cooking classes.”

George said she thinks their application for the program was chosen because it benefits the entire community.

“The produce that is grown in the gardens is accessible to anyone who lives around one of those gardens,” George said. “Residents nearby can come and take part in the harvest and take produce from it, it’s also sent home with the kids at the schools for their families. In some places where we have gardens, there is not ready access to fresh produce, there isn’t a grocery store nearby, so this actually makes produce available in areas where there might not be any. Given the problem of childhood obesity and that this is focused on eating healthier and also growing fresh produce, I think that maybe that appealed to the review board.”

The gardens are located at the Lake Contrary, Pickett, Lindbergh, Humboldt, Mark Twain, Edison, Parkway and the Amazonia Elementary Schools.

State Farm will fund the 40 causes with the most votes by the deadline.

Anyone can vote up to 10 times a day for the cause until November 4.

The Streets Dept. begins preparations for winter

SJSD with snowThe St. Joseph Streets Department will prepare for winter weather with a rodeo.

Interim Superintendent of St. Joseph Streets and Sewers Keven Schneider said they begin thinking about and making preparations for winter and cold weather in the middle of summer.

“We start going through our (equipment), making sure everything’s in good shape and all repaired,” Schneider said. “We also make sure that we have a (full) supply of salt.”

Schneider said around the beginning of November each year they hold a “rodeo” for operators to practice.

“The operators run through a course with a plow and we score each obstacle that we set up and the obstacles kind of mimic what they might encounter on the street,” Schneider said. “We score that and make it kind of fun for them, but at the same time it gets them thinking snow again.”

Prior to the rodeo, if it’s an operator’s first or second winter Schneider said they hold a two day training session to provide an introduction to policies, dos and don’ts and experience with the plows.

“It’s kind of a fun week but it’s informative and all summer long you’ve been thinking asphalt and concrete and rock and it’s time to start thinking about snow again.”

Schneider said since they have started doing the rodeos each year, it’s helped reduce incidents.

Training week takes place the week of October 31-November 4, and the rodeo begins at 9 a.m. on November 3rd at Heritage Park.

Fall rabies vaccination clinic offered this weekend

dog-1023933_1920An opportunity to protect your pets will be offered at the fall rabies vaccination clinic in St. Joseph this weekend.

St. Joseph Animal Shelter Humane Educator Jenna Keyes said they’ll be offering rabies vaccinations, combination vaccinations, microchipping, dog park tag sales – everything offered at the spring rabies clinics will also be available at the clinic on Saturday. Keyes said a rabies vaccination is something you need to get every year as a preventative for your pet.

“I know a lot of people think rabies is not a big deal, but it’s so simple to get that preventative vaccination for your animal, especially whenever you can come by a rabies vaccination clinic and get it for such a cheap price,” Keyes said. “I hear a lot of times, ‘My dog is indoor,’ ‘My cats never go outside,’ ‘I’m never going to need a rabies vaccination.’ That’s not true. You still need to get those rabies vaccinations, your animals still have to have those city licenses if you’re living inside the city, you never know whenever your animal may get out or whenever wildlife may get into your house, as well. It’s a lot better to be proactive from the start and it’ll make your headache a little less if they should ever be exposed to a wild animal.”

The fall rabies vaccination clinic takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the St. Joseph Aquatic Park.
