Veterans enjoy many freebies on Veterans Day

American FlagJULIE WATSON, Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Veterans Day is not only a time to honor those who have served in the military: For American businesses, it’s also a time to back that appreciation up with a freebie.

A slew of locally owned businesses and national chains are offering up something free Tuesday to anyone who has served in the military. The trend has been growing since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Veterans can start off their day chowing down a free breakfast at a number of restaurants.

They can then walk off the calories in a national park. The National Park Service is offering free admission to everyone.

And that’s only scratching the surface: There are free appetizers, free beer, free non-alcoholic drinks and free car washes, among other things.

Shields rejects offer from the Royals

One of the dozen, Colorado outfielder Michael Cuddyer, became the first major free agent to switch teams when he agreed to a $21 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets.

World Series star Pablo Sandoval (San Francisco) also let the deadline pass, as did pitcher Max Scherzer and first baseman-designated hitter Victor Martinez (Detroit), and left-hander Francisco Liriano and catcher Russell Martin (Pittsburgh).

The others were shortstop Hanley Ramirez (Los Angeles Dodgers), outfielder Nelson Cruz (Baltimore), right-hander James Shields (Kansas City), closer David Robertson (New York Yankees), outfielder Melky Cabrera (Toronto) and pitcher Ervin Santana (Atlanta).

Faster airport screening set for military students

Homeland SecurityBRIAN WITTE, Associated Press

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Students of four U.S. military service academies are now eligible for expedited airport screening.

The Transportation Security Administration announced the extension of the Pre-Check system on Monday. It will apply to students at the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy at more than 120 participating airports when flying on 11 major airlines.

TSA Administrator John Pistole noted the announcement comes just before Veterans Day. He says providing the fast-lane screening program is the least the agency can do for members of the nation’s military and service academies.

Last year, TSA extended the Pre-Check benefits system to all U.S. Armed Forces members. On average, more than 50,000 Defense Department employees benefit from the system on a weekly basis.
