Student-Athletes Given Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.- Earlier this year, 28 Griffon Student-Athletes received the 2013-14 Div. II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

In order for a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, the student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale
have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work
have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year

Marijuana does well at the ballot box

NEW YORK (AP) — Supporters of legalized marijuana use are celebrating a couple of victories on Election Day.

Voters in Oregon and the District of Columbia approved ballot measures allowing the use of marijuana by adults.

Oregon will join Colorado and Washington state, where voters approved the recreational use of pot two years ago. And the District of Columbia is on the same path, unless Congress blocks the move.

Alaska also had a marijuana legalization measure on its ballot.

In Washington state, voters who were faced with two competing measures on gun sales approved an expansion of background checks.

In Colorado and North Dakota, voters rejected measures that opponents feared could lead to bans on abortion. The Colorado proposal would have added “unborn human beings” to the state’s criminal code. But Tennessee voters approved a measure that will give state lawmakers more power to regulate abortion.

Voters in Arkansas and Nebraska approved increases in their states’ minimum wages. In Arkansas, it will rise from $6.25 an hour to $8.50 by 2017, in Nebraska it will go from $7.25 to $9.

Protesters arrested at acceptance speech near Ferguson

CLAYTON (AP) – Police have arrested protesters who interrupted Democrat Steve Stenger’s acceptance speech for the position of St. Louis County executive.

KTVI-TV reports about 15 protesters from Ferguson were escorted out of the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel in Clayton by St. Louis County police. Some chanted the words “free speech” while they were being removed.

The protesters later congregated outside before an unspecified number were arrested. No charges have been reported.

Stenger apparently defeated Republican state lawmaker Rick Stream on Tuesday to become the county executive. The Ferguson police shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old dominated the campaign, and many black activists and political leaders supported Stream.

Police didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment by the Associated Press on Tuesday night.

Highlights of Missouri’s 2014 General Election

POLICIES OVER POLITICIANS, MOSTLY
When it comes to voters statewide, the question wasn’t so much who voters were voting for, but what.
The election cycle found Missouri with just one statewide elected office on the ballot, and in that race, incumbent auditor Tom Schweich easily won re-election over two third-party candidates who haven’t reported spending any money against him.
Voters were greeted by a series of ballot questions aimed at specific issues. The state’s eight U.S. House seats were also up, and incumbents made a clean sweep. Two local races also were grabbing attention — the St. Louis County executive’s seat and a judge’s position in Cole County.

BALLOT MEASURES
Tuesday’s ballot featured four proposals, including an amendment to base teacher evaluations largely on student performance data. That proposal was roundly rejected.
Proposed constitutional amendment 6, which would create a six-day, no-excuses-needed early-voting period for general elections, failed.
Proposed constitutional amendment 2, which would allow allegations of past criminal acts to be used against those facing sex-related charges involving victims under 18 years old, was approved voters.
Also approved was proposed constitutional amendment 10, which would allow lawmakers to override a governor’s decision to freeze or slow spending on items in the state budget.

LOCAL RACES, AND WHAT THEY MEAN FOR GOV. NIXON
Republicans won a supermajority in the Missouri General Assembly by adding to their already strong numbers.
Voters elected an overwhelming number of Republicans during Tuesday’s elections, giving the GOP a greater than two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate. That’s enough seats to be able to override vetoes by Democratic Gov. Jan Nixon without needing any votes from minority party Democrats.
The divide between Nixon and state lawmakers is so wide that U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill and other top Democratic officeholders poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into the state party to help finance this year’s legislative races. They’re hoping Democrats can cut into the Republican supermajority.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY
Three months ago, the two candidates for St. Louis County executive couldn’t have anticipated how a race normally about the nuts and bolts of local government would become something of a referendum on police killings.
But the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was black, by a white police officer in Ferguson in August transformed the election. Brown was killed by Officer Darren Wilson just four days after Democratic County Councilman Steve Stenger defeated 11-year incumbent Charlie Dooley, and conservative state lawmaker Rick Stream won a two-man Republican primary.
Stenger became a primary target of Ferguson protesters for his steadfast support of county prosecutor Bob McCulloch — and his refusal to join their calls for McCulloch to recuse himself from the case over concerns about his family ties to law enforcement.
But Stenger apparently defeated Republican state lawmaker Rick Stream on Tuesday, by a margin of fewer than 2,000 votes, or 0.6 percent. It wasn’t immediately clear if Stream would request a recount.

COLE COUNTY JUDGE
Attention and lots of money were poured into Cole County, where Republican Brian Stumpe received big money from the GOP in his bid to oust Cole County Circuit Court Judge Pat Joyce. Cole County is home to the state Capitol, meaning its judges hear cases that question the constitutionality of legislation or the wording of statewide ballot initiatives. The big-money strategy didn’t work, however, as Joyce — the only Democratic judge in the circuit court — was returned to her job by voters. Republican interest in the race made the local judicial election — typically sleepy, low-budget affairs — one of the more interesting races in Missouri.

Mo. GOP wins big; teacher tenure measure dies

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missourians have voted down several conservative-backed measures, including a limited early voting proposal, while electing an overwhelmingly Republican-dominated Legislature.

The election Tuesday marked a sweeping victory for state-level Republicans, who gained a more than two-thirds majority in both legislative chambers, meaning GOP lawmaker will be able to override vetoes by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

The GOP will also have more power next session after Missourians passed Amendment 10, which allows the Legislature to override a governor’s decision to freeze or slow spending on items in the state budget. The initiative also prevents governors from making budget recommendations based on revenue from legislation that’s not yet been passed.

But several other proposed constitutional amendments supported by Republicans failed. A measure to allow early voting failed, and a proposal to end teacher tenure and require a majority of educator evaluations to be based on student performance data was rejected.

The proposed constitutional amendments were some of the most attention-grabbing issues during an election without races for president, governor or U.S. senate seats.

Voters elected Republican Auditor Tom Schweich, the only candidate running for a statewide office, to another term after he faced no Democratic opposition. All eight U.S. representatives — Jason Smith, Vicky Hartzler, Blaine Luetkemeyer, Billy Long, Emanuel Cleaver, Lacy Clay, Ann Wagner and Sam Graves — faced no major challengers and won re-election.

Voter attention focused on Amendment 3, the teacher-tenure proposal.

Educator groups continued fighting the measure even after its main sponsor stopped campaigning following poor public polling.

The group Teach Great, financed by investment firm founder Rex Sinquefield, hoped the proposal would create a system to reward good teachers and encourage poor-scoring educators to shape up.

Educators said it could have pushed educators to “teach to the test,” and could have led to unfair results for teachers of disadvantaged students who might test poorly regardless of instruction.

“I just think it’s too broad and an arbitrary way to judge performance,” said 52-year-old Laura Lynch of Kansas City, a creative director and Democrat.

Missourians also defeated an early voting initiative sent to voters by the Republican-led Legislature. Proposed Amendment 6 would have created six days of early voting before general elections.

Missouri currently has no early voting, other than allowing absentee voting in limited circumstances when people attest they won’t be able to vote in person on Election Day.

Republican backers said the measure could have increased access to voting while ensuring residents don’t miss important campaign developments by voting too early. Democrats argued that the proposal was too restrictive, in part because weekend voting was not included. It also included a caveat that early voting could occur only if funding is approved from the governor and Legislature.

“I don’t think it was going to make any difference the way it was worded and all the conditions they put on it,” said 67-year old chaplain and Democrat Diane McCain of Columbia.

Voters also passed a constitutional amendment that could make it easier to gain convictions or guilty pleas in child sexual abuse cases.

Some prosecutors and law enforcement officials who want to be able to use allegations of past criminal acts against suspects facing sex-related charges involving victims under 18 years old supported Amendment 2. The measure faced no organized opposition.

Wildcats move up in Latest College Football Playoff Poll

The Kansas State Wildcats are ranked seventh in the new College Football Playoff Poll released Tuesday night.

K-State was number nine a week ago.

Mississippi State remains ranked first, followed by Florida State, Auburn, Oregon, Alabama, TCU and Kansas State. Michigan State is ranked eighth followed by Arizona State and Notre Dame.

K-State plays at TCU Saturday night.

Brownback narrowly re-elected Kansas governor

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Gov. Sam Brownback has narrowly won re-election in Kansas against a Democratic opponent who attempted to make their race a referendum on the incumbent’s conservative fiscal experiment.

Brownback’s contest with Democrat Paul Davis remained closed as ballots from Tuesday’s election were counted. The challenger made some headway with disaffected GOP moderates and unaffiliated voters.

But with most of the unofficial returns counted, Brownback had just shy of 50 percent of the vote. Davis had 46 percent and Libertarian Keen Umbehr had 4 percent.

Brownback argued that personal income tax cuts enacted by legislators at his urging are creating jobs and boosting the economy. Davis said the cuts wrecked the state’s finances and endangered school funding.

The governor portrayed Davis a liberal supporter of Democratic President Barack Obama.

Selzer elected insurance commissioner

TOPEKA — Ken Selzer, a conservative Republican who supports repeal of the Affordable Care Act and Kansas’ participation in a multi-state compact designed to allow member states to take control of their Medicare programs, has been elected Kansas insurance commissioner.
Selzer, 61, defeated Dennis Anderson, a Democrat, in the general election Tuesday.
“The message we got from people all across Kansas tonight is that they are looking for someone to really focus on the issues and to bring a business-like approach to an important state department,” Selzer said during a telephone interview shortly after Anderson conceded defeat.

At the time, Selzer, who lives in Leawood, had captured 60 percent of the statewide vote.

He succeeds Sandy Praeger, a moderate Republican from Lawrence who chose not to seek a fourth four-year term.

Praeger had endorsed Anderson in September due to his support for expanding eligibility for the state’s Medicaid program, which Selzer opposes.

Anderson, 57, leads an Overland Park-based company that trains and provides continuing education courses for insurance agents. Like Praeger, he had expressed support for implementation of the ACA, also known as Obamacare, and for expanding the state’s Medicaid program. He opposed Kansas legislators’ decision to join the compact.

Selzer said he was committed to ensuring a “seamless transition” between his and Praeger’s administrations.

He downplayed the office’s role in implementing the Affordable Care Act, expanding Medicaid or defining the parameters of the health care compact.

“Those are legislative issues,” he said. “They’re for the Legislature to decide. I’ll be focusing my attention on the three things that the office is required to do, and that’s educate and advocate for consumers, regulate insurance companies, and license insurance agents.”

Selzer, who grew up in Marion and McPherson counties, is an executive managing partner with Aon Benfield, a global insurance and consulting firm. His office is in Kansas City, Mo. He has a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California. He’s also a certified public accountant.

He said he will resign his position with Aon Benfield before he’s sworn in as insurance commissioner on Jan. 12.

The Kansas Insurance Department is charged with ensuring the financial solvency of companies that sell health, life and property insurance in Kansas; enforcing regulatory compliance; educating and assisting consumers; and licensing agents.

In its 143-year history, the department has had one Democrat commissioner, Kathleen Sebelius, who later was twice elected governor before joining President Obama’s Cabinet as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Sebelius and Praeger are the only women to have been elected Kansas insurance commissioner.

Mark Peterson, chair of the political science department at Washburn University, said that despite Praeger’s decision to endorse Anderson, the insurance commissioner’s race didn’t seem to pique much interest among voters.

“It was a curious race in that we had the candidates talking about Obamacare and the health care compact when, in reality, as insurance commissioner they won’t have much authority over either question,” Peterson said. “It was sort of like they were grasping at straws to get the public to pay attention, but I don’t sense that the public did pay attention.”

Peterson called the race “one of the closest (on the ballot) to being a straight-party vote.”
