KCP&L seeks big rate increase

kcplKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Power & Light Co. is seeking a 15.8 percent increase for about half of its Missouri customers.

The utility said Thursday that it needs the increased revenue to pay for environmental upgrades at its coal-fired plant in La Cygne, Kansas.

KCP&L officials say the $121 million annual rate increase would cost the average residential customer about $14 more a month.

The company said the federally required installation of scrubbers at the La Cygne plant cost $1.21 billion.

The Kansas City Star reports if the current request is approved, the affected KCP&L customers will be paying more than 50 percent more for power than they did a few years ago.

The rate increase for La Cygne would probably not go into effect until September 2015.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Union Pacific has converted a boxcar into a mobile classroom that it will use to help teach emergency responders about railroads.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based railroad says the boxcar classroom will join its fleet of training equipment it uses with emergency responders.

Union Pacific vice president Bob Grimaila says the classroom will make it possible to expand the number of classes offered each year.

Already, Union Pacific trains about 2,500 local, state and federal emergency responders each year.

The classes give emergency responders a chance to see railroad equipment up close and better prepare for the possibility of a derailment.

2 more plead guilty in bank robbery and leaving cash in a tree

courtKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Two more Iowa men pleaded guilty to robbing a small northwest Missouri bank after which the money was left in a tree.
The St. Joseph News-Press reports 28-year-old Travis Davis, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, pleaded guilty Thursday to bank robbery for his role in the March 21 theft at Citizens Bank & Trust in Burlington Junction.

Court records show 27-year-old Donald Kestner Jr., also of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, pleaded guilty Tuesday to bank robbery and using a firearm during a crime.
In October, 27-year-old Torrence O’Neill, also of Mount Pleasant, pleaded guilty to bank robbery.
A witness saw the men leave the bank and followed them until authorities arrested them. A few days later, more than $12,000 taken from the bank was found in a tree in southern Iowa.

Several schools in southeast Kansas will use the Southeast Kansas Career Technical Education Center of Crawford County for training in such areas as careers as welding, construction, culinary arts, nursing and auto technician training.

Griffons travels to Maryville looking for bounce back win

Missouri Western Athletics
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon Football looks for a bounce back win as they travel to take on rival Northwest Missouri State this weekend. Missouri Western is fresh off its third loss of the season and travels to Maryville with memories of last year’s 30-point defeat at the hands of the Bearcats.

A loss last week could be the best thing for Missouri Western. Jerry Partridge is 9-2 since 2009 the week after a loss. A road trip might not be the worst thing for the Griffons either. Since 2011, Missouri Western is 18-3 away from Spratt Stadium, including a 14-game regular season road winning streak that was snapped earlier this year at Central Oklahoma. A loss would give MWSU four losses in a season for the first time since 2010 and four MIAA losses for the first time since 2008. A win would guarantee Missouri Western of nothing short of a .500 season for the ninth straight year.

Despite the loss last week, the Griffon offense continues to show improvement, setting seven season high offensive marks and six individual marks last week against Emporia State. The defense also continues to impress, holding opponents to just over 14 points per game and picking off an MIAA-high 13 passes. The Griffons have also put pressure on oppsoing quarterbacks, racking up 25 sacks on the year.

Northwest enters after a bounce back win of their own. The Bearcats took down Fort Hays, 29-10 last week after falling to Pittsburg State, 35-17 the week before. The Bearcats lead the MIAA in total defense (224) and are third in total offense (441.1). Northwest leads the all-time series 23-12 but the Griffons have taken two of the last four from Northwest, including the last matchup in Maryville in 2012 that handed Missouri Western their first ever, outright MIAA Championship.
