Mo. shooting victims, gunman killed by police identified

murder policeCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The Boone County Sheriff’s Department has identified two shooting victims and a man who was shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy during the weekend.

The department says in a news release that 53-year-old Deborah Koontz and her 51-year-old brother, Donald Wilson, were shot to death Saturday night near Columbia. A third man, 44-year-old Willie Mays, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.

The suspect in the shootings, 28-year-old Cornelius Parker, was pursued by Boone County deputies. Boone County authorities Parker died after he got out of his vehicle and exchanged gunfire with a deputy.

Parker lived with the three victims but investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

The 32-year-old deputy involved in shooting has over 11 years in law enforcement.

Case dismissed against Saudi man accused in attack on Mo. woman

courtSPRINGFIELD (AP) – A judge dismissed a case against a Saudi national who was accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Springfield two years ago.

The Springfield News-Leader reported Greene County Circuit Judge Mark Powell last week dismissed the case against 22-year-old Rayan Alqabbaa.

Alqabbaa and Ahmed Alanazi, who were Missouri State University students, were accused in 2003 of dragging a woman from a nightclub and sexually assaulting her at an apartment. Alanazi was found not guilty in a bench trial in August.

The judge who found Alanazi not guilty said the woman believed something happened to her but she was too intoxicated to remember and her story changed several times.

Alqabbaa remained in the U.S. for schooling but Alanazi has returned to Saudi Arabia.

2015 Football Season Ticket Options Announced

K-State athletics officials have announced a full menu of ticket k-state footballoptions when football season tickets go on sale Monday

According to a media release, the football schedule will include seven games in Bill Snyder Family Stadium, including matchups with TCU, Oklahoma, Baylor, Iowa State, and West Virginia.

Season ticket prices in some areas including bench seating, view level, and general admission areas, will show slight increases in 2015, the first of any kind for full-price season ticket options since 2011, ranging from $5 to $25 per ticket depending on location.

Public season bench seating is priced at $330 this season, while chairback seating remains at $355. Prices for K-State faculty / staff are $264 for bench and $285 for chairback. Up to two Young Alumni tickets are available at $205 for K-Staters who have received their undergraduate degrees since December 2010. With the opening of the new Vanier Football Complex and North Stadium project approximately 500 additional season tickets in the north end zone are also available for $225 a seat, or a 4-pack for $699. Pledge and Tradition ticket-holders throughout the stadium will have the opportunity to renew their seats at $125 each.

Fans interested in purchasing new season tickets, including the more than 3,800 fans on the season ticket waiting list can do so beginning Monday online at www.k-statesports.com, or by calling 1-800-221-CATS. There is a payment plan option.

Several single-game promotions will be available. Single-game tickets will go on sale to the general public online at k-statesports.com beginning June 22 and will feature numerous options and price levels.

One injured after small plane’s ‘hard landing’ in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY (AP) – A spokesman of the Kansas City Aviation Department said one person has minor injuries after a small plane experienced a hard landing at a Kansas City airport.

Spokesman Joe McBride said one of the aircraft’s two occupants suffered a broken arm Sunday night.

He said the plane, which took off from an airport near Mosby, went down on the north side of the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport.

McBride said the aircraft had flown over the Country Club Plaza before its pilot flew to the Wheeler airport and practiced a “touch and go” landing.

He said the plane soon lost power and came down at the airport.

Although the plane’s landing gear is damaged, McBride said the plane didn’t turn over.

Mo. man accused of throwing rocks at patrol car, kicking officer

PoliceSPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) – A Springfield man is accused of throwing a rock that shattered a patrol car’s windshield and then kicking a police officer during an arrest.

The Springfield News-Leader reported 32-year-old Jason Alexander is charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and property damage.

According to a probable cause statement, officers found Alexander intoxicated in a parking garage Feb. 12 in downtown Springfield and told him to leave. Alexander initially refused to leave, but later left. As officers were leaving in their patrol car, Alexander threw two large rocks, with one breaking the windshield.

The statement says Alexander resisted arrest by kicking and punching an officer. He was booked into Greene County Jail on a $7,500 bond. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney.

Kansas City police connect 2 deadly shootings

police crimeKANSAS CITY (AP) – Kansas City police have connected the fatal shootings of two men who were found less than a mile apart.

Police identified the victims as Calvin Watson and Daniel Conner, both 21 years old and from Kansas City. Police said in a news release that the first victim was found dead around 8:20 p.m. Friday. An officer then found a second victim who died at an area hospital.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Kansas City streetcar construction to finish this fall

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Officials say construction on Kansas City’s downtown streetcar project is nearly 50 percent complete and is on track to finish this fall.

But the vehicles will undergo months of testing before passengers can start boarding. It’s likely the streetcars won’t be open to the public until early 2016.

The Kansas City StarKansas City view reports several small businesses say water and sewer work related to the construction project has inconvenienced customers for nine months, affecting their bottom line.

However, the executive director of the Kansas City Streetcar Authority and a spokeswoman of the Kansas City Streetcar Constructors say crews have worked hard to keep the impact of construction work minimal. They say the most disruptive street work is nearly finished.

2 from St. Joseph hospitalized after crash with SUV

Missouri Highway Patrol  MHPAVENUE CITY – Two from St. Joseph were injured in an accident just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 1998 Chevy Blazer driven by Samual J. Johnston, 17, Savannah, was southbound on U.S. 169 at Route D in Avenue City.

The driver failed to yield and struck the left side of a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Robert M. McQuinn, 33, St. Joseph that was northbound.

McQuinn and a passenger Meggie N. McQuinn, 30, St. Joseph were transported to Mosaic Life Care.
Johnston was not injured.

The MSHP reported all were properly restrained at the time of the accident.

Boy dies after falling into Missouri farm pond

emergencyNEVADA (AP) – A boy has died after falling through an ice-covered farm pond in southern Missouri.

Capt. Kevin Scott, with the Nevada Fire Department, says emergency crews rushed to the scene Saturday morning after a caller said three children were in the pond northwest of Nevada. The Joplin Globe reports that a bystander pulled one boy from the pond, and another boy was able to get out on his own.

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher says divers recovered the third child about an hour and a half after dispatchers were contacted. The boy was rushed to Nevada Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The child’s name wasn’t immediately released.

Mosher says one of the surviving children was listed in stable condition, and the other was treated and released.

2 die in crash on snow-covered Missouri highway

fatalLEBANON, Mo. (AP) — Two people are dead after a driver lost control on a snow-covered highway in southern Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the out-of-control car skidded into a tractor-trailer that was stopped Saturday afternoon because of an earlier crash on Interstate 44.

The 20-year-old Fort Leonard Wood man who was driving the car survived with minor injuries, but both passengers were ejected and killed. The patrol identified the victims as 24-year-old Eduardo Contreras of Wichita, Kansas, and Cesar Hernandez of Los Angeles.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it has been working to clear wreckage from another I-44 pileup that happened Saturday when a tractor-trailer crashed into the rear of a Greyhound bus.

The department says it could take most of Sunday before both westbound lanes can be reopened.
