Governors: No clear plan if health care subsidies fall

Healthcare Healthcare.govSTEVE PEOPLES, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of people could lose health insurance subsidies if the Supreme Court sides with opponents of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

And what’s clear as the national governors met in Washington is that many states that could be affected are not prepared for the potential fallout.

Several governors indicated they could do little about the estimated 8 million people in more than 30 states who could drop coverage if they were to lose health insurance subsidies later this year — a scenario that legal experts suggest is a real possibility.

While preliminary state-level discussions have begun in some cases, many governors charged that Congress should bear the burden of fixing any problems.

Arguments are schedule before the court on March 4, with a ruling expected in late June.

Push on to make catfish a Kansas state symbol

catfishHUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Despite past opposition, some Kansas residents want the channel catfish to become a state symbol.

Supporters of the fish say it has a long history in Kansas and remains one of the most popular species in the state’s waters.

Bills to designate it as a state symbol have been introduced in Senate and House Committees. It was nominated by Robin Jennison, secretary of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism.

The Hutchinson News reports that earlier efforts to honor the fish failed. Opponents suggested a rarer species like the Topeka shiner, or considered the catfish a “second-class” species.

The Kansas Agriculture Department says the fish helps the state’s economy, as a favorite of anglers and as a major part of the state’s aquaculture industry.

Missouri House Budget Committee chairman Tom Flanigan, of Carthage, says he does not plan to add funding to the 2016 budget for the Office of Community Engagement.

Nixon created the office in September by executive order and tasked it with facilitating communication with citizens and finding policy solutions to help poor and minority communities.
