Daniel Sams to transfer from Kansas State

The explosive offense at Kansas State has apparently lost one of its weapons for next football season.

According to GoPowercat.com, Sherrell Griffin has confirmed that her son, Daniel Sams, will transfer from K-State. Sams switched from quarterback to wide receiver during spring drills, leaving Jake Waters as the leader of the Wildcat offense.

Not a lot of details are available at this time and Daniel Sams took to Twitter as he posted the following: “If twitter had enough characters to go on I will do that. I just wanna say I love my team, the fans, and this journey. #emaw at heart I promise”

Sams led all Big 12 quarterbacks with 807 yards rushing, which ranked ninth overall in the league. But during K-State’s late-season run, which included wins in six of its seven final games, Waters gradually took over the full-time job.

To get back on the field, Sams requested a position change to receiver during the spring. But he had only two grabs for nine yards in K-State’s spring game.

Former Missouri football player charged with rape

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — A former University of Missouri football player has been charged with felony rape.

University police say a female acquaintance accused 20-year-old David Sowell of a May 9 sexual assault in his Campus View apartment. The privately-owned apartment complex is used by the university as overflow student housing.

Sowell is a sophomore from suburban Chicago. He briefly played defensive back for the Tigers last year as a walk-on but was dismissed from the football team early in the 2013 season for unspecified disciplinary violations.

Sowell was arrested by campus police early Saturday. He remained in the Boone County Jail late Monday on a $100,000, cash-only bond after an initial court appearance earlier in the day.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Sowell.

Teen injured in Monday crash

BELTON–A teenage driver was injured in a Henry County crash on Monday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred as a 1994 Lincoln Mark 8 driven by Logan C. Nold, 19, Clinton, was southbound on Mo. 7 at Northwest 401 Road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road.

The vehicle struck a culvert, became airborne and crossed over NW 401. The vehicle returned to earth and overturned.

Nold was transported to Research Hospital in Belton. The MSHP reported they were unsure if Nold was properly restrained at the time of the crash.

Mo. taxpayers still due big money

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Several hundred thousand Missouri taxpayers are still waiting for refund checks nearly a month after the tax deadline.

State budget director Linda Luebbering (LOO’-bur-ing) says the Department of Revenue has 366,000 individual income tax refunds remaining to be sent. People are owed a total of about $167 million.

Luebbering says the department appears to be behind last year’s pace in issuing tax refunds. That’s partly because more people waited to file their taxes and partly an effort to manage the state’s cash flow.

Through the end of April, Missouri’s net general revenues were up just 0.5 percent though the first 10 months of the 2014 fiscal year.

Luebbering says the lag in tax refunds means the state’s finances probably are a little worse than those figures would make it appear.

Kansas man dies in Monday crash

ALTOONA, Kan.–A Kansas man was killed in Monday crash in Wilson County. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 GMC van driven by Richard Gene Hawkins, 53, Fort Scott was westbound on K-47 two miles east of Altoona. The van crossed over the road into the south shoulder.

The driver overcorrected causing the vehicle to skid broadside across the highway. The vehicle entered the north ditch, overturned striking a fence and coming to rest on its top.

Hawkins was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to Frontier Forensics Midwest.

The KHP reported he was not wearing a seat belt.

Missouri Lawmakers Approve Boater Safety Bill

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — Missouri lawmakers have given final approval to a bill that would expand who can obtain a temporary boating safety card.

Missouri requires resident boat operators born after 1984 to complete a boating education class or pass an equivalency exam. Non-residents can get a temporary boating safety card one time by signing an affidavit asserting they have reviewed a handbook of Missouri boating laws and responsibilities.

The temporary card is valid for up to seven days. This year’s legislation would let Missourians also get the one-time temporary card.

House members approved the measure 138-8 on Monday, and it passed the Senate 32-0 in April. The legislation now goes to Gov. Jay Nixon.

Mo. lawmakers pass e-cigarette regs

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers have given final approval to legislation barring people younger than 18 from buying electronic cigarettes.

The House voted 127-19 on Monday to send the bill to Gov. Jay Nixon. It passed the Senate earlier this year.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices used to heat a liquid nicotine solution and create vapor that is inhaled.

Supporters say the legislation would protect teenagers from early exposure to nicotine. Opponents say it doesn’t go far enough because it exempts e-cigarettes from some restrictions on tobacco sales and advertising. Under the bill, e-cigarettes would not be subject to Missouri’s tobacco tax.

The vote comes a few weeks after the Food and Drug Administration announced plans to ban sales to minors, add warning labels and require approval for new products.

Mo. lawmakers give final approval to Tanning Bed legislation

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) – Missouri lawmakers have given final approval to legislation requiring parental consent for children younger than 17 to use commercial tanning beds.

House members approved the bill 103-38 on Monday. It passed the Senate 22-10 last week and goes now to Gov. Jay Nixon.

The measure includes penalties for businesses that allow customers under 17 use tanning beds without parental consent. First-time violators would be fined $100. The fine would increase to $250 for the second violation and to $500 after that.

Supporters say the bill would help protect teens from exposure to ultraviolet rays that can lead to skin cancer. Critics argued the requirement amounts to government intrusion on small businesses.

Solar Industry Seeks to Salvage Rebate Effort

MAPLEWOOD (AP) – Missouri’s solar energy industry is rallying to resurrect a popular rebate program created by a 2008 renewable-energy ballot initiative that was curtailed when the state’s largest utility said it had to cease participation to avoid rate increases capped by the voter-approved law.

The Missouri Solar Energy Industries Association says its members will have to lay off thousands of workers if state lawmakers or the Missouri Public Service Commission don’t make further fixes to an incentive program that provided customers who installed solar rooftop panels up to $50,000 in rebates.

With one week remaining in the state’s annual legislative session, solar company owners held a Monday morning news conference at Schlafly Bottleworks. The Maplewood brewery installed a solar roof several years ago.
