(AP) Authorities in Missouri’s capital city are cautioning the public about a scam involving jury duty.
The Cole County sheriff’s department said Monday it’s been receiving complaints about the scam.
Anyone receiving the call is urged to call the sheriff’s department.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino has been hired as the offensive coordinator at Iowa State.
Mangino spent eight seasons as the coach at Kansas, winning national coach of the year honors in 2007 and leading the Jayhawks to a win in the Orange Bowl. But Mangino was fired following the 2009 season amid accusations of treating his players poorly.
Mangino was 50-48 at Kansas. He spent three seasons out of football before serving as the assistant head coach at Youngstown State last year.
A Kansas City, Kan., man pleaded guilty today to robbing a credit union, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said.
John Noon, 65, Kansas City, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of armed bank robbery. In his plea, he admitted that on May 4, 2013, he robbed the Community America Credit Union at 10824 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kan. At today’s hearing, prosecutors told the judge Noon gave a teller a note demanding money and stating he had a gun he would use. He brandished a firearm before fleeing the bank. After investigators released video surveillance photos from the robbery, they received tips leading to Noon.
Sentencing will be set for a later date. He faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. Grissom commended the FBI, the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department, law enforcement officers in St. Joseph, Mo., and Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Rask for their work on the case.
U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today congratulated Ragan Webb, of Fairview Elementary School in Columbia and Laura Parn, of Green Tree Elementary School in Lake St. Louis who have been selected to receive the 2012 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).
“Math and science are areas our kids must concentrate on in order to compete for the jobs of tomorrow, and it’s wonderful to have an educator like Ragan achieving such amazing results here in Missouri,” McCaskill said.
The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level. Webb will receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States and a $10,000 award from NSF at an awards ceremony later this year in Washington, DC.
(AP) — Authorities say a traffic stop in Nebraska has led to the arrest of two people wanted in Iowa.
The Nebraska State Patrol says 30-year-old Shane Houke and 30-year-old Dawn Lagrange, both of Cedar Rapids, were arrested Saturday morning near Lexington.
Local police pulled over a vehicle driven by Houke after it was linked to a nearby convenience store where a driver allegedly failed to pay for gas and left. Lagrange was a passenger in Houke’s vehicle.
Authorities determined both Houke and Lagrange were listed on a most wanted list compiled by the US Marshals Services in Iowa. Both face multiple warrants such as conspiracy to commit a felony.
Houke and Lagrange were taken to the Dawson County Jail. Court records do not list attorneys.
(AP) – The snowstorm that swept across Missouri led to more vehicle crashes than usual on the state’s highways, but there were no fatalities at the height of the storm.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Monday that many motorists appeared to follow advice to stay home or at least drive more cautiously if they did venture out.
The patrol responded to about 40 crashes Sunday as the snowstorm moved across the state. Patrol Capt. Tim Hull says many of those accidents involved vehicles sliding off the road. Few had serious injuries and none were fatal.
The patrol is still encouraging people to avoid traveling unless necessary because of the unusually cold weather and the lingering potential for slick spots on roads.
1:08pm A baby boy was killed this morning in a head-on collision with a snow plow east of St Joseph. The Missouri State Highway Patrol identifies the victim as Kiber Williams, 1, of Easton, Mo. According to a crash report, Kiber was not properly secured with a safety device.
The report says the mother Alicca Williams lost control of her Pontiac on Route C near Kemmer Road. The vehicle slid into the path of the MoDOT plow. The baby was transported to Heartland with serious injuries shortly after 8am today. He was later transferred to Children’s Mercy, where he was pronounced at 10:48am.
Everett Goddard, the driver of the snow plow, was treated for minor injuries.
11:45 a.m. UPDATE Two people were injured when a car hit a snowplow on Monday morning on Route C near Highway 36.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol Fifty-four year old Everett D. Goddard of St. Joseph was driving a 2002 International Truck and snowplow north on Route C, four miles east of St. Joseph just after 8 a.m.
Twenty-four year old Alicca M. Williams of Easton, Mo was driving a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix south bound on Route C. She lost control of the car on the snow and ice. The car traveled across the centerline and hit the snow-plow on the truck
The truck travelled off the east side of the road and came to rest upright off the road, facing north. The Grand Prix travelled off the west side of Route-C and came to rest on it wheels, partly on the highway, facing southeast.
Goddard was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center.
One-year-old Kiber L. Williams of Easton, a passenger in the Grand Prix was transported to Heartland Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City with serious injuries. The child was not in a safety seat. His mother was not injured.
8:25 a.m First responders have been dispatched to report of an injury crash at US 36 and State Route C, approximately 3 miles east of St. Joseph.

(AP) — Bitterly cold weather prompted death penalty opponents to cancel a news conference to discuss efforts to halt executions.
The news conference had been scheduled for noon Monday at the Missouri Capitol.
George Mercer was executed on Jan. 6, 1989, for the 1978 rape and slaying of waitress Karen Keeten in the Kansas City area. Mercer’s execution was Missouri’s first after a nationwide moratorium on capital punishment was lifted in 1976.
Since then, Missouri has executed 70 inmates.
The state executed two people in the past two months and is scheduled to execute Herbert Smulls on Jan. 29 for the 1991 robbery and slaying of suburban St. Louis jewelry store owner Stephen Honickman.
(AP) — Union Pacific Railroad says the extreme cold, drifting snow and gusting winds are affecting its Midwest network.
The Omaha-based railroad said Monday that main line and switching operations are being slowed.
The railroad says customers can expect delays of as long as 48 hours for traffic moving through Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.
