If you are considering applying to run for a seat on one of the five grain commodity commissions, ballots are due to the Kansas Department of Agriculture no later than Nov. 30.
Candidates must have been actively engaged in growing corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers and must gather 20 signatures from eligible voters to be eligible for the 2014 ballot.

(AP) — Five Missouri school districts will be getting federal money to replace old school buses with more energy-efficient versions.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says in a release the districts will receive funds of up to 25 percent of the cost of a new school bus, with a $20,000 maximum per district.
Districts receiving the funds are Clever R-5, Hannibal Public Schools, Joplin Schools, Ozark R-6 and West County R-4.
The funds come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are administered by the DNR’s Early School Bus Replacement Program.
The DNR says controlling diesel emissions from school buses can benefit children because they’re more susceptible to the health effects of the emissions.
(AP) — A Missouri man who sold counterfeit goods at a store in Kansas has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a news release Wednesday that 45-year-old Jehad Shalabi, of Blue Springs, Mo., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit trademark goods. He sold the merchandise at the Joe Black store in Kansas City, Kan.
Prosecutors say FBI agents working undercover bought counterfeit items at the store and agents searching the store in June 2011 seized 588 counterfeit items with trademarks including Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike and Major League Baseball.
Investigators say the counterfeit goods accounted for up 20 percent of the store’s weekly sales of $4,000 to $6,000.
Investigators are trying to determine if skeletal remains found in southwest Missouri are those of an eastern Missouri man missing since 2006.
The remains were found Tuesday in Taney County, near where Matthew Needham went missing. Needham, of Fredericktown, was last seen Aug. 10, 2006. He was running into a wooded area after the vehicle he was riding in was found burned.
The remains will be examined Thursday by a pathologist in Springfield, who will compare dental records.
A Missouri appeals court has ruled that the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph cannot be liable for actions of a priest accused of abusing a boy away from church property.
A three-judge panel of the Missouri Western District Court of Appeals on Tuesday upheld a ruling last year by a Jackson County judge that dismissed civil allegations against the diocese filed by a plaintiff identified as “D.T.”
He alleged in his lawsuit that the Rev. Michael Tierney abused him in the 1970s, once in a hotel room and another time in the basement of Tierney’s mother’s home.
Tierney denied wrongdoing. The plaintiff dismissed his claims against Tierney while his appeal of rulings in favor of the diocese was pending.
(AP) Cass County officials say three children who were missing for several days have returned to their father’s home in Harrisonville.
The children were found Oct. 16 in Canada with their noncustodial mother. Cass County officials say they came back to their father’s home during the weekend.
Their mother, Sherri L. O’Neal remains in Canada awaiting a status hearing.
Cass County officials say a 19-year-old man who was arrested at the Montana/Canada border after the children was booked into the Cass County jail Tuesday on a charge of accessory to interference with custody.
AP) – A southwest Missouri man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old in Republic
Twenty-nine-year-old Christopher Jorgensen of Ava pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Kenny Stout. He was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years on each charge, to be served concurrently.
Prosecutors say Jorgensen and another man beat Stout with metal baseball bats before he was stabbed to death six hours later in December 2011.
A second suspect, 26-year-old Nathan Jensen, of Seymour, is charged with first-degree murder in Stout’s death.
The motive for the killing remains unclear.
AP) – A Missouri business owner from northeast Kansas has admitted embezzling more than $1.3 million from the Missouri Petroleum Storage Tank Insurance Fund.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says 52-year-old Robert Fine II of Lenexa, Kan., pleaded guilty Tuesday to mail fraud and money laundering. His plea agreement requires him to pay restitution of $1.5 million.
Fine was the owner and sole employee of FINEnvironmental Inc., a home-based company that used subcontractors to perform environmental services for property owners with underground petroleum storage tanks.
Prosecutors say Fine created false, inflated invoices for the services and submitted them to the insurance fund.
He could be sentenced to up to 30 years in federal prison.
(AP) — A 29-year-old Missouri man whose conviction for the killing of a newspaper sports editor was overturned is free from custody after the state attorney general said he would not hold a new trial.
Ryan Ferguson was released from a state prison in Jefferson City Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Boone County Jail in Columbia, which freed him shortly before 6 p.m. He had been imprisoned since 2005.
Ferguson waved to a crowd of cheering supporters from the back seat of his father’s car on the way to a news conference.
A Missouri appeals court last week overturned Ferguson’s conviction in the 2001 strangling and beating death of Columbia Daily Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt. Ferguson was 17 at the time of the killing. A high school classmate implicated him.
