Police release photos in search for armed robber

The St. Joseph Police Department is searching for a suspect believed to be involved in a recent string of armed robberies.

Most recently, police responded to the Quick Stop located at 6739 Memorial Highway Wednesday around 9:15 p.m. after a man allegedly pointed a gun at the clerk, demanded money and left the store on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.

The victim reported the suspect as a white man wearing a blue bandanna over his face and sunglasses. No one was injured during the incident.

Capt. Jeff Wilson said detectives are investigating the incident in connection with robberies that took place, Friday at the Cenex located at 1029 Garfield and Sunday at the Hawkins 66 located at 6401 Memorial Highway. No arrests have been made. Authorities have released surveillance photos. Anyone with information is asked to call police or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 238-TIPS.

Ravenwood man charged in fatal Nodaway County crash

A 71-year-old man is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter after a farm vehicle crash earlier this year near Parnell.

Marlin Meyer of Ravenwood was charged with the class C felony Wednesday in Nodaway County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, on April 24, Virgina Burns, 60 of Parnell was driving a 2001 Tahoe southbound on MO 46 and Meyer was driving a 2011 Case IH Steiger northbound. The patrol said the crash took place around 5:40 a.m. when the farm implement being pulled by the tractor crossed the center line of the roadway and Burns’ vehicle hit the implement. Burns was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a grand jury indictment, Meyer is accused of driving his farm implement on the highway blocking both lanes of traffic which resulted in Burns’ death when her vehicle hit the implement.

Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rice said the charge against Meyer comes after a three-month long investigation and communication with the victim’s family.

“The amount of investigation we put into it to make sure we knew what we thought we knew,” Rice said. “Also, speaking with the family of Virginia and letting them know what we wanted to do…They’re supportive of our efforts to pursue the charges.  More than anything, I just wanted their blessing.”

Meyer was arrested Wednesday and is currently out on $10,000 bail. An arraignment has been scheduled for September 11.

The prosecutor’s office said, if convicted, the range punishment for a class C felony is imprisonment for three to 10 years; or by a fine not to exceed $10,000 or both.

Bikes will now be available to borrow at various locations in downtown St. Joseph.

The City of St. Joseph is launching its Pony Express Bike Share (PEBS) program with a ribbon cutting Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Civic Center Park. Stephanie Malita with the Health Department said the free program will allow people to borrow bikes and take short trips within the city.

“We’re going to open it up in the downtown area because it’s a flatter area,” Malita said. “We’re hoping people will find it easier to ride in the downtown area because it’s not quite as hilly.”

Malita said 40 bikes will eventually be available at a total of seven locations. Those locations include: Patee Park, Transfer Station, Coleman Hawkins Park, Radisson Hotel, Visitors Center, Buchanan County Courthouse, and Remington Nature Center.

“You get on a bike from a rack and ride it to any other rack or ride it back to the rack that you borrowed it from. We ask that people use it for four hours or less at a time,” she said. “If you stop at a location and want to go into a business for a meal or to shop, which we hope people will do, then you can turn the seat sideways…Which will indicate that it’s in use.”

The project was supported by a block grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and community partnerships.

St. Joseph man charged after midtown standoff

A St. Joseph man has been charged after a police chase and standoff Monday afternoon in a midtown neighborhood.

Jeffrey Parham, 36 was charged Tuesday in Buchanan County with felonies of second-degree assault and first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

Commander Eric Protzman said Parham was taken into custody after a nearly two-hour long standoff at a home located in the 1500 block of S 11th St. Monday afternoon.

As we previously reported, Luther Smith of St. Joseph said his pickup was stolen from his workplace Friday night. Smith’s stepson spotted the vehicle Monday afternoon at about 2:45 p.m. The stepson followed the vehicle to a repair shop near 18th and Howard. A police pursuit began through town and ended near 11th and Monterey. Authorities blocked off the neighborhood streets and tried to talk the suspect into coming outside.

According to online court documents, Parham is being held without bail due to the court finding him to be a danger to the community.

Parham is due in court Friday for an arraignment.

Three injured in St. Joseph I-29 rollover

Three people were injured early Tuesday morning in a rollover crash on I-29 in St. Joseph.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jaeke Payne, 24 of Nebraska was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta southbound on the highway around 4:15 a.m. when the vehicle started to skid and went off the west side of the road. The vehicle rolled over multiple times and Payne and a passenger, Zachary Chollar, 22 also of Nebraska were ejected from the vehicle. Neither Payne nor Chollar were reported to be wearing their seat belts. They were both taken by ambulance to Mosaic Life Care for treatment of what was described as serious injuries. Another passenger, Riley Sutton, 17 of Iowa was also transported to Mosaic for treatment of a moderate injury. He was reported to be wearing a seat belt.

Man arrested after float trip results in Platte River search

The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office has taken a man into custody after a float trip resulted in an overnight search of the Platte River.

Sheriff Bill Puett said around 10:30 p.m. Monday deputies responded to the area of East/Saxton road at the Platte River after a man reported that he had been rafting with a friend down the river and had not seen his friend in over an hour. Puett said the man feared his friend may have drowned.

“They had bought two rafts and were floating down the river from Mitchell road,” Puett said. “One of the rafts had sprung a leak and that individual got out and he was the one waiting for his friend.”

Deputies searched the Platte River as well as roadways in the area throughout the night. Puett said around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday the missing man, identified as Eugene Shaw, 45 of Kansas City was found near SE 85th Road and 36 Highway. Puett said authorities determined Shaw had hid from authorities all night due to an outstanding parole violation warrant. Shaw was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Buchanan County Jail.

“For an individual who is just not wanting to go back to jail for an outstanding warrant that is completely out of bounds. He put a lot of people at risk. Also, all of those resources are then diverted for other calls for service for things we might need them for,” Puett said. “We respond in force when there’s a water rescue and things like that. When people that do things like this, I think it’s really disheartening.”

Puett said the sheriff’s office was assisted in the search by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, The Missouri Department of Conservation, South-Central Buchanan County Fire, San Antonio Fire, St. Joseph Fire, and Gower Fire.
