Entrepreneurship Week schedule. Image courtesy Missouri Western.

A week for entrepreneurs and anyone interested in business is coming up later this month at Missouri Western State University.

Workshops being offered during Entrepreneurship Week include Accounting for Beginners, Creating a Marketing Plan, What Your Financial Statement Can Tell You and Social Media Tools for Small Businesses.

Director for the Center for Entrepreneurship at the Missouri Western Craig School of Business Annette Weeks said this year, the speaker for the capstone luncheon on Friday will be Peter Ueberroth.

“Our benefactor, Steve Craig, was able to get him to come to St. Joseph. A little bit of background on him is he was the architect for the Los Angeles Summer Olympics (1984), he was also voted Man of the Year by Time Magazine, he was commissioner of the baseball league as well as helped an effort to rebuild Los Angeles after the riots,” Weeks said. “We’re very excited to get someone of his esteem and such a vast background especially in entrepreneurship to come to Missouri Western in St. Joseph.”

Weeks said whether or not someone has an interest in being an entrepreneur themselves, entrepreneurship affects everyone in a community.

“It’s important to know what (entrepreneurs) bring to our region, the economic stability, the job creation, the innovation, it comes from our local entrepreneurs,” Weeks said. “We really feel passionate about that and at Missouri Western, we are committed to cultivating and educating entrepreneurs for our region. Entrepreneurship Week is one of our efforts in supporting this entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

Entrepreneurship Week takes place March 25-29 on the campus of Missouri Western.

Northwest online nursing program granted pre-accreditation status

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State University online RN to BSN program has been granted pre-accreditation status by the National League for Nursing’s Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA).

Brooke McAtee, the director of the nursing program at Northwest, said the designation is an important step in the continued development and success of the program.

“I am very excited that all of our hard work is being acknowledged by the accrediting body,” McAtee said. “This is a big accomplishment for our program in such a short timeframe. I am proud of my team and all that we have done to ensure student success.”

Northwest began taking steps in 2017 to relaunch its RN-to-BSN after determining the demand and outlook for future jobs in the field is strong, at the state and national levels. Northwest also is working with Academic Partnerships, a vendor that provides support and services to help Northwest with its online enrollment, to build momentum and grow its nursing programs. Northwest began offering courses within the program in August 2018.

The National League for Nursing is dedicated to excellence in nursing and is regarded as the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. It offers faculty development, networking opportunities, testing services, nursing research grants and public policy initiatives to its more than 40,000 individual and more than 1,200 institutional members, comprising nursing education programs across the spectrum of higher education and health care organizations. Furthermore, CNEA accreditation helps programs focus on continuous improvement and ensures they are addressing the needs of employers.

Spring forward: Set clocks ahead 1 hour

WASHINGTON (AP) — Time to abide by the adage to spring forward (though it’s not yet spring).

The shift from standard to daylight saving time comes at 2 a.m. local time Sunday across most of the United States. Consider setting clocks an hour ahead before bed Saturday night.

Daylight will begin to last longer into the evening but the sun will take an hour longer to emerge in the morning.

No time change is observed in Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.

Standard time returns Nov. 3.

It’s official: Everyone’s sick of winter, meteorologists say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Even the National Weather Service is sick of winter.

The agency’s Kansas City area office said in a tweet that “After a recent poll, stats confirm that 96% of our followers are tired of winter.” It jokingly added that, “The other 4% are wrong.”

Just over 29 inches (about 74 centimeters) of snow has fallen since November at the Kansas City International Airport. Meteorologist Jonathan Welsh says that’s 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) more than fell over the past three winter seasons combined. None of those winters saw more than 8 inches (about 20 centimeters).

The last time there was more snow in the area was in 2012-2013, when accumulations totaled nearly 32 inches (about 81 centimeters).

Welsh says no additional snow is expected anytime soon in the area, although “we’re certainly not out of the woods.”

U.S. Marshals capture violent fugitive in St. Joseph

A violent out-of-state fugitive was found and arrested Friday morning in St. Joseph.

According to a news release from U.S. Marshal Mark S. James, Western District of Missouri, Delbert Flint was charged in the 36th District Court, Detroit, Michigan, on February 12, 2019 with one count of tampering with evidence and one count of disinterment and mutilation of a dead body stemming from a 2016 incident in Detroit.

Detroit Police were dispatched to a vehicle fire in the early morning hours of March 20, 2016, following the discovery of a dead body by the Detroit Fire Department in the trunk of the burning car. Following the entry of charges against Flint in February 2019, the U.S. Marshals from the Eastern District of Michigan provided assistance to police investigators in determining Flint’s whereabouts.

Marshal James credited the numerous agencies involved in the fugitive investigations and thanked the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and St. Joseph Police Department for their significant assistance leading to the capture of Delbert Flint.

Jefferson City, Mo. – State Representative Sheila Solon (R-St. Joseph) successfully passed HB 821 through the Missouri House of Representatives and moved it to the Senate on Thursday.

According to a news release from Solon’s office, this legislation will allow the city of St. Joseph to create a land bank with the ultimate goal of getting abandoned properties in the hands of responsible owners.

“I was asked to handle this legislation by the city of St. Joseph; it is a top priority for them. I am thankful that I was able to get it passed out of the House and moved to the Senate where Senator Tony Luetkemeyer (R-Parkville) has agreed to handle this legislation for me” said Solon.

According to the news release, the city of St. Joseph currently has approximately 450 vacant structures that are considered dangerous and are in violation of the Property Maintenance Code. This legislation will give an incentive for responsible borrowers to invest in these properties and either bring them up to safe standards or possibly tear them down and rebuild.
