Savannah police warn of permit scammer

The Savannah Police Department is warning residents of a woman entering businesses allegedly trying to collect money for permits.

According to a post on social media Friday, police have received calls about a woman going to a business claiming she is an official with the County and that the establishment owes a $25 permit fee that needs to be paid in cash.

Police said, the Andrew County Health Department, Andrew County, or City of Savannah will not collect money on site, and do not have anyone going around to collect.

Anyone who comes into contact with this person is asked to call dispatch at 816-324-4114.

(UPDATE) US 59 reopens after crash

(UPDATE) According to Sgt. Chris McBane, the Traffic Unit Supervisor for the St. Joseph Police Department, one motorist suffered moderate injuries, and one was issued a citation. McBane said a semi was southbound on 59 Hwy, and a car was northbound. McBane said the car crossed over the center line and struck the rear wheels of the semi trailer.

U.S. Highway 59 in southern St. Joseph was closed for more than two hours Friday morning after a crash involving a semi and a passenger vehicle.

The impact of the collision separated the semi’s rear-axle from the rest of the trailer. The accident closed 59 Highway between Elizabeth and Parker Streets. Traffic was routed east to King Hill Ave.

The St. Joseph Police Department issued a Nixle alert at 8:12 a.m. advising motorists to the area.

St. Patrick’s Day parade postponed until next weekend

(Update 2:57 p.m.) – The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St. Joseph has been postponed until next weekend.

Sgt. Chris McBane with the St. Joseph Police Department said officials decided in the interest of everybody’s safety with the snow in the forecast to postpone the parade until Saturday, March 18th at the same noon start time.

“In talking to police they said if the streets are covered with snow on the morning you might run the risk of having the permit pulled,” said Bob Fitzpatrick, one of the parade organizers. “Reluctantly we went ahead and decided to postpone.”

Norty’s has also postponed its shamrock run until the 18th.

(11 a.m.) The 31st annual St. Patrick’s Day parade this weekend in St. Joseph will also celebrate an anniversary.

The 20th anniversary of the Ancient Order of Hibernians being established in St. Joseph and sponsoring the parade will also be celebrated this weekend.

Shane McDonald with the Ancient Order of Hibernians said the Irish-Catholic fraternal organization has roots tracing back to Ireland around the 1600s.

“(It was) established in the United States at about the time of the Civil War to protect and defend the Church and Irish immigrants in the New York area,” McDonald said. “Irish immigrants were a very persecuted minority when they began to come over in the 1800s and so the Hibernians formed to protect the churches and the clergy that served the Irish population.”

McDonald said registration for participating in the parade is appreciated but not required. The entry fee is $50 and part of the proceeds will benefit various causes the Ancient Order of the Hibernians supports including Catholic education and the Second Harvest Food Bank.

“If anyone knows much about the history of the Irish, what drove a lot of the migration of the Irish to the United States was the Great Famine of the mid-1800s,” McDonald said. “So hunger is something that is important and dear to our Irish hearts.”

McDonald said Second Harvest is partnering with them again this year and people are welcome to bring canned goods and nonperishable items to the parade and volunteers with the Second Harvest van can pick up donations along the parade route.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade begins at noon Saturday at Noyes and Frederick and will travel downtown.

Social Security scam hits northeast Kansas

scamThe Brown County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public of a new scam circulating in the area.

Sheriff John Merchant said a local financial institution has reported receiving numerous calls from people concerned about an automated telephone call stating their social security number has been put on hold. The the automated message gives them a number to contact in order to correct the situation.

“What we’re trying to alert everybody to is, don’t call the number back. It is a scam,” Sheriff Merchant said. “It was reported to us that the folks who have called this number these places have their security number and it is a concern to them.”

Merchant said residents who may be impacted should report the scam to their state’s attorney general office.

“The Social Security Office is not going to call,” Merchant said. “If there’s anything at all they will be getting a hold of you by a more reputable form of notification such as through the mail that’s verifiable versus something like this.”

With the increase in scams circulating the area Merchant said when in doubt, call law enforcement officials.

“It’s rampant right now,” Merchant said. “When there’s a concern get a hold of me…We’ll put it out to the public so we can keep folks from being victimized.”

MoDOT launches pothole patrol

(Missourinet) – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has kicked off its enhanced pothole patrol across the state.

MoDOT spokeswoman Linda Wilson-Horn says its maintenance crews are committed to repairing potholes with asphalt as quickly as possible, adding that they’ll aggressively respond and patch potholes to keep state highways smooth and safe for Missourians.

“If you call that in today, our crews are going to have a goal of getting it patched by the same time the next day,” Wilson-Horn says. “So, if you call it in on a Monday morning hopefully we’ll have it fixed by Tuesday morning when you drive that same stretch of road.”

You can call 1-888-ASK-MODOT to report potholes, or file it at modot.org.

“We do have people answering the phone, we’re available 24-7,” says Wilson-Horn. “Because we handle a lot of emergencies, so you can always call that in and let us know that you see one.”

Wilson-Horn tells Missourinet that MoDOT spends $15 million annually on pothole patching, with most of that happening in March.

She says the agency normally has about 300 pothole-patching crews working on state roadways in March.

“This is the time of year when we get the most,” Wilson-Horn says. “As we come out of winter, we start to end that freeze-thaw cycle, and the water gets down inside the cracks of the pavement and it pops out. We do pavement repair all year round, but the bulk of it does happen during the month of March.”

MODOT notes potholes form when temperatures warm up during the day, but continue to be cold at night.

Chillicothe Police investigate Craig’s List scam and warn others

Chillicothe Police Department PatchThe Chillicothe Police Department is investigating after an area resident reported losing thousands in a Craig’s List scam.

A woman on Friday reported she had been scammed out of $2,500. Officer Michael Smith said the victim was attempting to purchase a vehicle off of Craig’s List. The woman was told to pay for the vehicle by purchasing Walmart gift cards and providing the seller with the card numbers and their PIN. After doing so, the victim said the seller stopped communicating and she learned that the money had been removed from the card.

Officer Smith said they come across this type of scam often.

“We see it more often then not. The most unfortunate thing is we see sometimes they target the elderly,” Smith said. “When you’re making a purchase online to somebody that you’ve never seen or talked to before or if there’s not a phone number or something that you can contact them on we would advise you to probably stay clear of that seller.”

He urges people to use caution when dealing with purchases over the internet. He said another common scam he encounters comes from buyers online.

“The individuals will contact you about purchasing something from you. They will say, ‘Okay I’ll send you a check,’ and they’ll send you a check in the mail. You’ll get a check, let’s say if you’re selling something for $500 then they’ll give you a check for $3,000. When you receive that check and you call them they’ll say ‘Yeah I’m going to send someone pick that item up for me will you just give the rest of that money to them?'” Smith said. “That check is usually a fraudulent check and the bank doesn’t find out about it for a day or two and then that person is out the money and has to pay the bank back that money.”

Smith said it’s best to use caution when dealing with buying and selling online.

“Unfortunately a lot of those are targeting towards the elderly. We’ve gotten pretty good with some of the local businesses where if they see an individual come in and pick up a gift card for an unusual amount usually their employees will start asking questions to maybe make sure it’s a legit reason they’re picking up these cards,” Smith said. “Sometimes we get calls from business at that time letting us know, ‘Hey you might want to come down here. We tried to talk to them and you might just come down here and let them know what’s going on.'”

He said, when in doubt to call authorities first.

“If you even have the slightest gut feeling that things aren’t right feel free to contact your local law enforcement and explain the situation with them. They’d be glad to take the time to explain to you or maybe look into it a little bit more,” Smith said. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
