Residents are trying to pick up after a tornado leveled homes, took down power lines, lifted furniture and uprooted trees in Clinton County.
A tornado touched down Monday night between 7:15 and 7:46 p.m. The National Weather Service has determined the strength of the tornado as an EF-2 with the peak wind at 132 miles per hour. The tornado traveled from Smithville to Lathrop, a path of 18.7 miles. Julie Adolphson, Meteorologist in charge with the NWS of Pleasant Hill said a team was deployed Tuesday morning to assess the damage.
“Our path looks like just south of Trimble and moving towards the northeast, south of Plattsburg, and just on the southern edge of Lathrop and towards the northeast of Lathrop where it looks like that’s where it ended near Missouri 110,” Adolphson said. “I have to go through and compare the reports we received from spotters along with the survey team.”
No fatalities were reported. Adolphson said the strongest part of the tornado appears to have hit the areas of southwest McComas Ln. and southwest State Highway J.
Matt and Adrian’s home was destroyed during Monday night’s EF-2 tornado
Matt and Adrian Gaines said they were home at the time the tornado hit in the area of southwest State Highway J.
“It was one of the worst experiences of my whole life,” Adrian said. “I’m learning from first-hand experience the suffering and the pain of losing everything. But I have great gratitude, and I’d say the humility of being alive, and my partner being alive and our dog being alive. The material things are gone but the things that can never be replaced are here.”
Matt said he was standing on the front porch of their home watching the lightning when he heard a roar.
“I knew it was bad. I grabbed my partner and we went into the basement,” Matt said.
“It sounds like a train at first,”Adrian said. “Five minutes before our house blew away we went down to the basement.”
Their home was demolished. Matt said their gun safe fell in front of them in the basement and he believes it saved their lives by creating a barrier.
Rick Bashor, acting Public Information Officer for Clinton County Emergency Management Response said during the storm officials received a report of two people with minor injuries that were transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. Bashor said two other people also received minor injuries from the storm and were transported by private vehicle for treatment.
Crews work to restore power
In addition to debris and damage to buildings, Bashor said there was also a large power outage in the Lathrop and Plattsburg area.
“Emergency management has been in contact with the power companies and they’re trying to restore it as soon as possible,” Bashor said. “The earliest they’re saying is midday today into tomorrow before they can get power back.”
The Red Cross of Northwest Missouri deployed volunteers Tuesday morning to assist Clinton County residents in the clean up. Karla Long, Red Cross Emergency Services Dir. said preliminary information they received indicated between 25 to 50 homes were impacted during the storm.
Red Cross responds to aid in clean up
“We’ve got trash bags, and boxes, snacks, water, shovels, rakes, gloves and we’ll be going into the affected area and if anybody needs any of that product we just distribute it out free of charge for them to be able to start that clean-up process,” Long said. “Those teams will be going out and will be reporting back to us later today what we’re actually seeing in the field.”

Now that the sun is up, crews are assessing the damage after Monday night storms hit the area.
American Red Cross Northwest Missouri Executive Director Angie Springs said they are in evaluation mode.

“The first and foremost thing that we’re going to be doing is circling around the impacted areas, handing out supplies as people start to clean up and clean out and evaluate the damage,” Springs said. “So that’s our goal today (Tuesday) is to take a look at what areas are impacted, what are the needs of those people that have been impacted by the storm and what supplies can we give them to help make this clean up process a little easier.”
Springs said, so far, they have been hearing of home damage especially in Clinton County where potentially 25 to 50 homes were impacted mainly in the southwest part of the county.
Springs said the Red Cross is making its first stop in Clinton County to assess damage and people can help by staying out of impacted areas so emergency personnel can begin cleaning up.
“This is the reason why the American Red Cross raises funds. Right now we’re in the middle of our Heroes Campaign and this is what your money goes to help support,” Springs said. “One of the best ways to help… is by making a financial contribution to the American Red Cross so we continue doing the good work that we do right here. You never know when it’ll be in your backyard.”

Clinton County has opened up its Emergency Operation Center due to Monday’s storms.
According to posts on the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook, Monday’s severe weather appears to have impacted a large part of Clinton County.
“We are currently in the process of checking residences and assessing the damage of the large storm that struck our county. Currently we have made contact with several residents who sustained minor injuries and several homes have been completely destroyed,” the office said. “We ask the public to refrain from driving around as we have multiple live power lines on the ground. Power crews are working as fast as they can to restore power throughout the Region.”
Clinton County activated an emergency plan and has multiple agencies working together to provide safety and security to residents. The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging people to reach out to family and neighbors to ensure they are safe.
The following roadways are closed in Clinton County:
*Route 33 South out of Lathrop.
*South Street in Lathrop.
*SW Arnold Road at Route J
Roadways closed to thru traffic:
*Route J from Route C to Route W.
*SE 228th Street.
The Office said around 2 a.m. Tuesday that multiple streets still have large debris in the roadway causing hazards. Also, multiple fences were reported down. Drivers are encouraged to drive slow and watch out for livestock that may be out.
The National Weather Service plans to deploy assessment teams Tuesday around the area including Smithville/Trimble/Lathrop to survey tornado damage. EF scale ratings will be assigned to the tornadoes Tuesday afternoon and/or Wednesday.

The American Red Cross opened shelters after a round of Tornado warnings moved through the area Monday night.
A shelter was opened Monday at 11 p.m. at the Gower Christian Church located at 203 Third. St. in Gower. The Red Cross said people from that area who were impacted by the storm were encouraged to go there for food, water or a place to spend the night.
A shelter was also set up in Oak Gtove, Mo. to help those impacted in the Grain Valley, Bates City, Oak Grove and Odessa areas.
According to the National Weather Service, assessment teams will be deployed Tuesday to survey tornado damage in Olathe/Leawood/Grandview, Lee’s Summit/Oak Grove/Odessa, Smithville/Trimble/Lathrop and Richmond/Carrollton.
NWS said they may also survey damage near Mt Moriah/Mercer and near Ballard. EF scale ratings will be assigned to these tornadoes Tuesday afternoon and/or Wednesday.
Two people were due in court Tuesday after their arrest on drug charges during a traffic stop.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a news release that a trooper stopped a Nissan Sentra on I-29 in Andrew County at 7am Sunday, March 5. The trooper conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, which officials say revealed eight pounds of marijuana, ecstasy pills, and $5000 dollars in US Currency.
The pair were each charged Monday with six felony and two misdemeanor drug and paraphernalia charges, according to online court records. Michael L. Nelson, 22, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Miya A. Jackson, 20, of California, are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday before Associate Circuit Judge Michael Ordnung.
US 136 West of Rock Port
A fire continued to burn at tire recycling facility along an east-west transportation hub in Northwest Missouri. Officials closed U.S. Highway 136 between Rock Port and Route D “due to lack of visibility from smoke in the Phelps City area.” A thick column of toxic black smoke poured out of a concrete building at the Entire Recycling facility. The plume was visible for miles.
That fire was reported to Emergency Management Director Rhonda Wiley’s office at 10:50 pm Sunday. Firefighters from Rock Port, Watson, Tarkio, Fairfax and Westboro responded and many were still on the scene by 2:00 pm Monday. Wiley said the Entire Recycling facility was still fully engulfed in flame Monday afternoon, and it was expected to remain that way “for the foreseeable future.”
“…the next few hours to a few days,” Wiley said. “We’re not really sure how long this is going to take.” She says its difficult to predict because there are a lot of tires in and around the facility fueling the fire, and gusty winds fanning the flames.
Emergency responders were monitoring the weather, fearing a shift in the wind could send that toxic smoke into Rock Port. The Atchison County Emergency Management Department urged residents in the area to “make plans now to stay safe.”
They also were conferring with railroad officials in an effort to stop rail traffic in the area.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said the highway could be closed for a couple of days due to the smoke.
According to Atchison County Emergency Management, the smoke from burning tire refuse could be toxic. It could also cause harm to animals. They strongly advised to stay out of the smoke.

A very mild day is on tap with highs in the 70s. However, those mild temperatures will come with three different types of weather threats. The first will be the wind advisory which begins at 10 a.m. and goes through 6 p.m. This advisory will be for sustained winds out of the south between 30-35 mph with gusts to 45-50 mph. The second threat will be the Red Flag Warning in effect for northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Burning should be avoided. Anything that does ignite will quickly burn out of control. The third threat will be the chance for severe weather this evening. Large hail, damaging winds, as well as an isolated tornado will all be possible. Tomorrow, fire weather concerns will continue and a fire weather watch has been issued for Tuesday. Here’s the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service:
