Benton and Lafayette receive Safe Schools Award

lafayette11Two St. Joseph public high schools are being recognized for efforts to keep young athletes safe.

Benton and Lafayette High schools are both the recipients of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Safe Sports School award.

Mosaic Life Care said the award champions safety and recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes. The award reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention and treatment. The certified athletic trainer for Benton High School is Jenna Zettel and Lyle Christensen is the certified athletic trainer for Lafayette High School.benton9

“As certified athletic trainers, our job is to keep our athletes safe and healthy as well as spectators at the event if the situation warrants. Our certified athletic trainers monitor physical education classes, team practices and games so they can accomplish their own goals of great competition, winning records, fair sportsmanship and good health,” said Kate Esely, Lead Athletic Trainer for Mosaic Life Care.

“We remain committed to the health and welfare of young athletes in competitive sports,” says NATA President Scott Sailor, EdD, ATC. “This award recognizes the contributions and commitment of schools across the country that are implementing safe sports policies and best practices to ensure athletes can do what they love best and have the appropriate care in place to prevent, manage and treat injuries should they occur.

In addition to Lafayette High School and Benton High School in St. Joseph, other certified trainers to win the award include: Excelsior Springs High School (Brett Morton), Winnetonka High School (Amanda Guess) and Oak Park High School (Matt Skare).

Krug Castle ornaments up for sale

The City of St. Joseph is offering Krug Castle up for sale while supplies last.

Julie Noel with the City of St. Joseph said 500 ornaments were purchased and as of Friday around 138 had already been sold. The ornaments can be bought at Remington Nature Center, located at 1502 McArthur Dr., the City of St. Joseph Parks Administration located at 1920 Grand Ave. or the City Clerk’s Office located at 1100 Frederick Ave. The ornaments are $9.99/each or orders of 5 or more for $9/each.

The ornament is made of painted 3D metal with the history of Krug Castle printed on the box.

“Our price point isn’t much more than what we are selling them for.  The money earned goes towards purchasing different ornaments for next year,” Noel said.

The holidays come to Felix Street Square this weekend

The annual Holidays in the Square event coincides with First Saturdays this month.

Brian Myers with First Saturdays Downtown said along with the usual 20 to 30 businesses participating in the day with sales and artists on display and bands performing, Santa will be making a visit.

“Duncan Carriages is going to be bringing Santa Claus down Felix Street,” Myers said. “Duncan will be giving free carriage rides like they do every year for people that want to come down and see the park and listen to the Christmas music at the gazebo. The St. Joseph Public Library has been very awesome in giving us a lot of volunteers and sponsoring our craft and game booths, so we’re very grateful for them for their support.”

Myers said First Saturdays started about four years ago at the Lucky Tiger and has grown to include over 30 businesses each month. Also included in the holiday events on Saturday, seven churches downtown will be holding a holiday open house during the day. Most will be open from 2 until 6 p.m.

One of the open houses will be at 117 Francis. Tim Doyle is the Director of the Restoration Project and Pastor of Restoration Church. He said the open house from 6 to 8 p.m. features a vintage Christmas at a historic building.

“We have several different vignettes set up, we have some vintage fireplace scenes, our sleigh of course, which is awesome, we found a collector in St. Louis and worked a deal for that,” Doyle said. “On the stage we have some musical acts, so live music, some entertainment, meet some Victorian characters and learn the history of this awesome building. Just to see it, to step into this place that’s sort of hearkening back to an earlier era in our city, frankly, it’s something I think we can take pride in, that our city has such a great legacy that we want to preserve.”

Doyle said there is no monetary charge for the open house.

“We are suggesting people bring donations of warm hats, scarves, gloves and coats,” Doyle said. “We have designated Humboldt Elementary School, which is our partner school, and then The Crossing, which is a shelter for the homeless in downtown St. Joe, so if people can bring those items, we’ll pass them on to those who need them.”

First Saturdays events begin Saturday morning and run throughout the day.The annual downtown tradition of Holidays at the Square takes place December 3rd from 6-8:30 p.m. at Felix Street Square. For more information on events on December 3rd, click here

 

Annual tradition brings Christmas carols, cocoa and cookies to the courthouse

Courthouse officials and criminal defendants alike stopped briefly over the noon hour Friday to enjoy an annual holiday tradition at the Buchanan County Courthouse.

A band and choir from St. Joseph Christian School performed in the lobby, as volunteers handed out cookies, cocoa and lemonade. Nearly forty kids took part.

Also in the courthouse, the newly-erected Christmas tree drew oohs and ahs. And the Buchanan County Women’s Democratic Club held their annual holiday fundraiser, offering ornaments and other holiday cheer for sale.

18-year-old charged after teen allegedly assaulted, shot and robbed

A St. Joseph man has been charged after a man was assaulted and shot Wednesday night in midtown.

Byron Brown, 18 is charged in Buchanan County with a misdemeanor for third-degree assault.  Brown was allegedly taken into custody after 18-year-old Zachary Turner was assaulted and shot Wednesday night in the 2200 block of Monterey Dr.

As we previously reported, detectives with the St. Joseph Police Department submitted a case to the prosecutor’s office for consideration of charges in reference to the assault investigation Thursday.  The shooting investigation is still ongoing.

Officers with the St. Joseph Police Department responded to Mosaic Life Care shortly after midnight Thursday to talk to Turner who had been shot once in the left thigh.  According to police reports, Turner was allegedly involved in a disturbance around 11 p.m. Wednesday with a group of individuals when he was physically assaulted and robbed.  As Turner was leaving the area he was allegedly shot at by an unknown individual.  He has since been released from the hospital.

According to court documents, Brown was one of five people named in the assault according to the victim.

“During the course of the investigation it was discovered the defendant had a co-defendant contact the victim and invite him over to the residence.  Once there he assaulted the victim by hitting him several times,” said Det. Tim Schweder with the St. Joseph Police Department.

Bail for Brown has been set at $7,500 cash only.  An arraignment is set for Tuesday.

Pioneer building will be demolished within ten business days

As a result of the fire last week at the Pioneer Building at 505-514 Francis Street, an emergency demolition has been ordered by the city of St. Joseph. City officials say that only then can the investigation begin into the cause of the fire.

The property owner will have ten business days to take down the building and get a structural engineer to render the area safe for entry.

A City of St. Joseph news release says that during this period “…the roadways will remain closed and necessary measures taken to safely access the adjacent businesses.”

“At the conclusion of the ten-day period, which will be 1pm, December 15, 2016, one lane each of Francis Street and 5th Street will reopen to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and the adjacent businesses fully accessible to the general public,” according to the news release.

“Once the area is safe for entry on December 15, the investigation into the cause of the fire will commence.”

Fire damages home on St. Joe Ave.

A fire was reported Thursday afternoon in a large house in the 4100 block of St. Joseph Ave.

Firefighters entered the home and removed at least one large, smoldering ember, but the blaze appeared to have spread into the upper reaches of the home. By about 2:30 p.m. smoke was rising from the roof of the home.

Initial reports indicated everyone made it out okay, although there was a reported language barrier with the person reporting the fire.

St. Joseph police were directing traffic, taking turns letting northbound and southbound traffic through. Robidoux Middle School is about a block north, and a lot of departing school buses added to the traffic congestion. The bulk of the fire units cleared the scene by about 4 p.m. and police were able to open traffic lanes in both directions.

Mosaic caregiver honored with award ceremony and surprise visit

A caregiver in St. Joseph was nominated for an award by a former patient whose life was impacted by his care and encouragement 26 years ago.

That caregiver, Ernie Hawkins, Patient Care Coordinator at Mosaic Life Care, is the recipient of the Mosaic Life Care “Law of the Heart” award. Hawkins was nominated by former patient Megan Vasko who was run over by a car in 1990 and suffered numerous injuries including a smashed pelvis, third degree road burns and a broken arm.

“When I came to the hospital I was 15 and I was very scared,” Vasko said. “Ernie came in, he was on duty that night, and helped lift me, with a smile on his face. He was there through physical therapy, always lifting me, the one who taught me how to sit up again, how to walk and I just always wanted to tell him thank you. I spent a lot of time in a lot of different hospitals, but there was never another nurse or anybody like Ernie. Being able to tell him thank you on Facebook through messaging has just been amazing, but being able to see him face-to-face and just say thank you for the smiles, for the encouragement, for teaching me that life is hard but you can just smile through it, that it’s going to get better.”

Hawkins was honored at a ceremony Thursday morning with an award and a surprise visit from Megan who flew in from her home in North Carolina.

“Big surprise, had no idea,” Hawkins said. “It’s good though, it makes me feel good. My parents always taught me, treat people the way you want to be treated and I see why now. It really makes you feel good when people remember you. The award is just the icing on the cake but the main thing is you did something good for someone and they remember you for it and they fly across the country to thank you, that makes me feel special.”

Christine Paige is the Clinic Special Projects Manager at Mosaic. She and other staff members found out about Megan’s story and wanted to do something for Ernie. Paige said once she found out Ernie was going to get the Law of the Heart award, she worked to make sure Megan was a part of the ceremony and kept it a secret from Ernie for months.

“The Law of the Heart, I think Ernie truly embodies that when it talks about somebody who shows compassion for the community, for their fellow caregivers, for their patients and that is him,” Paige said. “He loves his patients, they love him, he will take care of any of the staff here in the clinic or anyone he’s ever worked with. When it comes to the community, he has his Harley and does the charitable rides and does a lot for feeding the homeless and he literally would give you the shirt off his back and the last five dollars in his wallet. So when the application for this award came up, there was no doubt that he embodies the Law of the Heart.”

According to Mosaic’s website, the Law of the Heart award recognizes caregivers who have shown enthusiasm and compassion for patients, fellow caregivers and/or the community and their Live Life Well quest.  

“I’ve had multiple jobs, but patient care, it’s more than just fluffing a pillow or bringing a patient water,” Hawkins said. “When you connect with a patient, you get to sit and talk with them, you become that friend they don’t have at that particular time. Sometimes patients are a little cranky, but you have to understand where they’re at and what they’re going through and just be there for them. It’s great, I love it. It’s not about the money, the reward is that patient remembering what you did for them and that you did a good job. That right there says it all.”
