(News Release) ATCHISON, Kan., October 27, 2016 — As previously reported, a chemical release occurred at MGP Ingredients’ (Nasdaq: MGPI) plant in Atchison, Kan., at approximately 8 a.m. CT last Friday, Oct. 21. The reaction resulted in emissions venting into the air. As of 11 a.m. that morning, based on observations by local officials, the emissions had dispersed.

“As is always the case, the health and safety of our employees and the communities in which we operate are our top priority,” MGP said.

MGP’s management issued the following updates Thursday:

  •  During a routine chemical delivery by an MGP supplier to a secured portion of MGP’s property, two commonly used chemicals, sulfuric acid and sodium hypochlorite (bleach), were inadvertently mixed, causing a reaction. This reaction led to emissions of chlorine gas being released into the air.
  •  Local officials reported the plume that resulted from the chemical release blew over an area north and west of the plant.
  •  MGP employees took immediate action, as outlined in our safety protocols, by shutting down plant operations. Our employees also assisted first responders with evacuation procedures in the immediate vicinity of the plant.
  •  Per protocol, MGP reported the chemical release to the EPA and to Kansas and local authorities. The EPA, as well as the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, conducted monitoring at the plant and in the community following the incident. Local officials issued the “all clear” for residents and local employees within three hours of the incident occurring.
  • Based on information we have at this time, approximately 100 people, including three MGP employees, sought medical treatment related to respiratory concerns. We understand that all who required treatment at local hospitals have been released.
  •  MGP has and will continue to closely cooperate to investigate and to fully understand the cause and ensure that all appropriate response actions were taken. An investigation by the Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is underway. Results of the CSB’s investigation are expected to be released at a later date per that agency’s schedule and procedural practices. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have also investigated. At this time, we are unable to comment
on investigations by various agencies, as investigations are ongoing.
  •  Our plant operations are fully functional. However, this week our plant is undergoing previously planned, regularly-scheduled annual maintenance.
  • Based on testing and analysis, we are confident our inventories of protein and starch ingredients, as well as distilled spirits, were unaffected and are safe for consumption.
  •  All MGP employees undergo extensive and recurring training in line with federal, state and local regulations to ensure their well-being and the well-being of the communities in which we operate. We are cooperating with the ongoing investigations, which will inform us of any procedural modifications we may implement in response to this incident.
  • Since 2011, annual food and beverage safety audits have been conducted at our Atchison facility by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Each year, the facility has received the BRC’s highest rating. Theseaudits are approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). The GFSI benchmarks food safety standards for third-party audits that can be conducted and recognized worldwide. In addition, the facility
has been ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified since 2009. ISO 14001 is an Environmental Management System which provides a standard for measuring and improving an organization’s environmental impact. OHSAS 18001 is the Health and Safety Management System, which provides a system for measuring and improving an organization’s Health and Safety Standards.
  • We understand residents may have questions related to the chemical release. The City of Atchison has established a hotline in conjunction with the Federal Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry to field questions about the chemical release. Residents are advised to call 1-800-232-4636.

Gov. Jay Nixon Thursday visited the farm of Lanny Frakes in Buchanan County, where he held a Safer, Stronger Missouri roundtable with area farmers, local elected officials and representatives of area levee and drainage districts. Participants discussed the ongoing efforts over the last several years that have helped protect area farms, homes and businesses from flooding.

“Government’s most important role is keeping people safe, no matter if the threat is a tornado, an ice storm, or flooding, all of which and more we see here in Missouri,” Gov. Nixon said. “Northwest Missouri has seen more than its share of flooding over the last several years, especially in 2011. Since 2009, my administration has set out to make Missouri safer and stronger, and a big part of that is working with our local partners, including the levee districts that protect farms and communities.”

The roundtable was part of a series of Safer, Stronger Missouri events across the state in which the Governor is receiving updates on the state’s expanded capabilities in emergency planning and disaster response and recovery.

In 2011, Missouri communities experienced record flooding across the state due to water releases from upper-Missouri River reservoirs and a breach of the Birds Point levee in southeast Missouri. Immediate actions were taken to assist these communities. Over $6 million was provided for community development block grants to assist several Missouri towns and counties repair or replace roads, bridges, levees and other public infrastructure damaged or destroyed by the damaging flood waters. That included $4 million for projects along the Missouri River from Atchison County to Carroll County.

Earlier this month, the Governor approved $5 million in general revenue from the State of Missouri for a levee flood control project to help protect Rosecrans Memorial Airport and the Air National Guard base located there, as well as farms and homes in the area

Fish, and fishing, return to Krug Lagoon

They're counting each variety before moving them into the lagoon.
They’re counting each variety before moving them into the lagoon.
We asked around and couldn’t find anyone who can remember public fishing at Krug Park, but that’s about to change. The Missouri Department of Conservation began restocking the lake Wednesday, with an eye on opening it up for public fishing this spring.

“Today we’re putting in some fish, the initial stocking of Krug Park,” says Eric Dennis, a Fisheries Management Biologist with the Conservation Dept. “We’re stocking it with large mouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and channel catfish.”

Dennis says they’re restocking now and anticipate opening the park for public fishing this spring. It will be catch-and-release only. In about a year, they’ll introduce trout, and Dennis says you can catch and keep the trout.

“You’ll need a regular Missouri fishing license to fish here,” he says. “It’s going to be open from daylight to dark.”

Dennis and his team spent their day moving hundreds of bass and sunfish with fishing nets, five to ten at a time, from a large bucket into the lagoon. This spring they’ll add bluegill and channel cat, and next fall they’ll add trout.

Chuck Kempf with the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities was on hand for the restocking effort. Kempf says he’s glad to focus some of the department’s attention toward the purely recreational aspects of the city’s park system.

A huge crowd, including local government and business officials and the Chamber of Commerce Diplomats gathered at the Cosentino’s Price Chopper at the Belt and Beck Road Wednesday morning to watch the family company’s vice president John Cosentino cut the ribbon on the new store.

“We’re thrilled to be in this community,” said Store Director Debbie Kempf. “We’re thrilled to offer such a beautiful store, and hope that our customers leave saying WOW.”

Kempf says they’re hoping for a one-stop shopping experience featuring a little bit of everything for everyone.

“We’ve got great prices, we’ve got the largest deli in the company,” she said. “And we offer a wide variety of foods, smoked meats, the seafood department is fabulous, the freshest, triple-inspected produce. We’re really thrilled to be here and give the community such a wonderful facility.”

Apple Market on 36th St. to close

Apple Market logoApple Market is closing another location in St. Joseph.

Owners Todd Euler and Mike Decker announced Tuesday morning that in the coming weeks the Apple Market at 903 N. 36th St. will be closing.

“We understand the convenience this store offered to many here in St. Joseph, but with the current market conditions and incoming competition we see no alternative but to cease operations,” the company said in a news release.

Recently, Natural Grocers (correction) opened its doors on the Belt Highway and Price Chopper at the site of the old Plaza 8 theater on N. Belt will open Wednesday.

The 36th St. Apple Market location is the second grocery store Euler and Decker have closed so far this year.  As we previously reported, in August the Cash Saver in midtown was shutdown.

The closures brings Apple Market locations down to three in St. Joseph and one in Savannah.

Euler and Decker said customers should watch the store for additional details in the coming weeks.
