Highway Patrol will be on roads and waterways during Labor Day weekend

Missouri Highway Patrol MHP(Missourinet) – Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain John Hotz reminds motorists to buckle up during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, and to wear your life jacket on the water.

“This is kind of the last big weekend of the summer, and so everybody will be out either on the highway or on the roadways or on the waterways,” Hotz said. “And so, we’re just asking people to kind of make safety part of their weekend celebration.”

Ten people were killed and another 508 were injured in Missouri traffic crashes during the 2015 Labor Day holiday weekend. Hotz said that means one person was killed or injured every nine minutes.

“We do see a lot of crashes and a lot of injuries and even fatalities during this timeframe,” Hotz said. “So, again we just urge people to do their part to make sure that they are driving in a safe manner.”

Two people died in boating crashes during last year’s holiday weekend. Another ten were injured.

The Highway Patrol says all available officers will be patrolling roadways during the Labor Day holiday weekend, as part of Operation C.A.R.E. That stands for “Combined Accident Reduction Effort.” According to Hotz, officers will enforce speed limit, seat belt and alcohol laws. Troopers will also assist motorists.

Hotz said troopers will especially be visible on the roads on Friday and on Labor Day.

“You’ll see troopers on Interstates 29, 44, 55, 70 as well as U.S. Highways 60 and 61 out there at increments to increase visibility and to promote safety,” Hotz said.

Hotz encourages motorists to be patient and to allow extra time this weekend. Boaters are reminded to remain alert for other boats and to be courteous on the water.

The Patrol’s holiday counting period for fatalities is from Friday evening at 6 until Labor Day evening at 11:59.

No work zones planned over Labor Day weekend

wpid-modot-logo.jpgJEFFERSON CITY – All construction work on state routes in Missouri will stop starting at noon on Friday for the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Some work zones have permanent lane closures and barriers will remain in place this weekend. Some of the major permanent lane closure work zones include Interstate 70 at Fifth Street in St. Charles, Interstate 44 in the City of St. Louis and the Route 54/63 Missouri River bridge construction in Jefferson City.

Work will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m. For the locations of all state work zones, please check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map.

Motorists should pay attention to all signing, follow the posted speed limits, and take turns merging every other car, like a zipper, where lanes are closed. Always wear safety belts and be alert for slowed traffic, narrowed lanes or a reduced number of lanes. Many of these work zones may cause congestion and traffic delays especially during the peak travel times including Friday evening and Monday afternoon.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill has confirmed that she’ll run for re-election in 2018.

The Springfield News-Leader reports the Missouri Democrat said Tuesday while visiting a National Guard facility at Springfield-Branson National Airport that she’ll be “asking for another tour.”

A McCaskill spokesman confirmed she intends to seek re-election.

Voters first elected McCaskill to the Senate in 2006. She defeated Republican Rep. Todd Akin to win re-election in 2012. She underwent breast cancer treatment this year, including surgery.

Her Springfield visit is part of a statewide tour focused on national security and defense. It’s included stops at Whiteman Air Force Base and Rosecrans Air National Guard Base. She met with military leaders and criticized congressional Republicans for what she called “playing fiscal games” with military funding.

Spratt Memorial Stadium officially ready for football season

Spratt Memorial Stadium is ready for the first football game of the season after a ribbon cutting on Wednesday.

The grand opening of the new Craig Field at Spratt Stadium and the completed Victory Plaza at Missouri Western State University were celebrated with a St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony.

Missouri Western Director of Athletics Kurt McGuffin spoke at the ceremony, giving a history of the stadium and all the work and support that went into the grand opening this week.

“You have to have the support of the city and the community,” McGuffin said. “The things that have happened out here wouldn’t have happened without so much help from our city, our county commissioners. This collaborative effort, I’m really proud of, that I haven’t seen very often at some of the schools I’ve been at but St. Joe takes this to heart and I think we’ve all got to be very, very proud of what’s happening (here).”

The over $7 million construction project began in May 2015. New at the stadium are a concourse, concessions area, restrooms, team store, club level, including suites, and press box. Repairs and improvements were made to the home grandstand seating. There is also new field turf, a 2,500 square foot video scoreboard and Victory Plaza. The plaza features a sculpture representing Missouri Western’s “Victory Tree” tradition. The piece was designed by Sara Hunt and fabricated by Hausman Metal Works and Roofing.

Missouri Western football opens the 2016 season at the new Spratt Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday vs. the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
