Crime Stoppers to introduce new way to report tips

There will soon be a new way to report tips to Crime Stoppers in the St. Joseph area.

St. Joseph Police Capt. Dave Hart said the (816) 238-TIPS number will still be available to call, but next month, online and phone app components will be introduced.

“As technology changes and time goes on, we’re seeing fewer calls to 238-TIPS, but we still want to have that dialogue with our community, because they know what’s going on out there and we rely on them heavily,” Hart said. “So we started looking at different methods to increase that conversation with our community members and one that we came across was a software-based solution. Everybody uses social media, everybody uses the internet now, fewer and fewer people call on the phone, it’s all texting, it’s all digital communication. So it was time for us to get on board with that and provide that service to the community that they expect.”

Hart said the free app is user friendly and will direct tips to the people who need them.

“You just fill in the boxes, check different information, and it also allows, which we didn’t have before, real time communication. So if you’re willing to share more information, we can actually chat back and forth so we don’t just get a one-time tip… but you’re still anonymous,” Hart said. “The other neat feature of this software is it allows us to break up the tips so they go to the people that need them… in a timely manner. If the tip is an investigation tip, it goes to investigations… if it’s a tip on somebody who has warrants, it may go to our warrants unit.”

The changes will be rolled out on February 1st and more details will be available then.

WATCH Replay: Missouri Governor State of the State address

JEFFERSON CITY — Just after 3pm watch live as Governor Parson delivers the State of the State address.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Gov. Mike Parson is set to give his first State of the State address since taking office after his predecessor resigned.

The Republican on Wednesday will outline his top policy priorities and propose a spending plan for Missouri’s roughly $28 billion budget.

Parson was serving as lieutenant governor this time last year. He assumed the governorship in June after former Republican Gov. Eric Greitens resigned in the face of potential impeachment over allegations of sexual and political misconduct.

Parson has worked to strike a markedly different tone than Greitens, who openly fought with fellow Republican lawmakers.

Parson’s priorities for the 2019 legislative session include enacting a law to allow the state to collect tax revenue from out-of-state online retailers who sell things to Missourians.

The court naming will officially be unveiled in the Griffons’ regular season home finale on Saturday, Feb. 16 against Central Missouri. A ceremony will take place at halftime of the men’s game that afternoon with an open reception taking place after the men’s game. Fans in attendance that afternoon will receive a memento commemorating the occasion.

Smith roamed the sidelines as the head coach of the Griffons from 1988-2013, retiring as the winningest head men’s basketball coach in MIAA history with 519 wins as an MIAA coach and 618 total coaching victories. In 25 seasons at MWSU, Smith went 448-279 with a 241-181 mark in MIAA games. Smith won five regular season MIAA championships and four MIAA postseason championships, including leading Missouri Western to a sweep of both association titles in Missouri Western’s inaugural season in the MIAA, 1989-90. During Smith’s tenure, Missouri Western qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional Championships 11 times. He was named MIAA Coach of the Year twice at Missouri Western and once at Central Missouri and coached 51 All-MIAA selections, six All-Region picks and three NCAA All-Americans.

The Latest: Missouri House votes against LGBT protections

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Latest on Missouri House rules on open records (all times local):

1:40 p.m.

Missouri House members have voted against protecting staff from being fired for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

House members in a Tuesday voice vote rejected the proposed change to House internal rules.

Kansas City Democratic Rep. Greg Razer is gay and pushed for the change. He says that people should not be fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Razer told colleagues that “your religious views may say we’re going to hell. But we also have the right to have a job.”

Springfield Republican Rep. Curtis Trent raised concerns that adding those protections for LGBT House staffers could infringe on religious liberty. He said there needs to be more debate on the issue, and said it shouldn’t be decided in an internal rule change.

Help-Me-Hotline offers help for workers impacted by shutdown

By SARAH THOMACK
St. Joseph Post

Many federal workers faced their first pay day without a paycheck last week.

AFL-CIO Community Services Agency Executive Director Penny Adams said the Help-Me-Hotline is a resource available to anyone impacted by the federal government shutdown.

“For a lot of these workers, they have not ever had to reach out for any kind of assistance. Hopefully, many of them have some sort of savings they can fall back on, but the majority of the people live paycheck to paycheck and that’s not an option for them,” Adams said. “When they are in these situations, they don’t really know where to begin, so what we want to let them know is the first place we recommend they call is the Help-Me-Hotline. It’s committed to connecting people needing assistance to the resources that are out there in our community.”

Adams said furloughed federal employees in need of social services and anyone with questions about availability of public benefits can call the Help-Me-Hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get help.

“They can call about absolutely anything,” Adams said. “We have a database that we can enter in what their needs are – say if they’re calling about food – we can enter in ‘food pantries’ and bring up all the food pantries and then we will help them narrow it down to a food pantry that works for them… because everybody’s situation is different.”

Callers also can receive information on mental health counseling, transportation, job training, substance use recovery services, child care and volunteer opportunities. Additional information about unemployment benefits for furloughed employees is available from OPM.gov.

Adams said while they are focused on helping those in the northwest Missouri area, they also have access to resources all over Missouri and in Kansas. The Help-Me-Hotline is a free and confidential service.
