The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce has a new director with some new ideas for 2016.

Mary Ingersoll accepted the Board’s offer to serve as Director beginning in January. The Director position was part of a restructure for the organization.

“They’re looking for me to be working for the chamber 20-hours a week but less in the office and more out in the community talking to business owners, chamber members, and others to talk about what we want the community to be and become into the future and what role the chamber can play in that,” Ingersoll said. “I’m really committed to making Savannah the best place that it can possibly be.”

Ingersoll said she’s a Savannah resident and a business owner. She said she hopes to fill the vacant business spaces around the county.

“I don’t think there’s a defined type of business that I’m looking for,” Ingersoll said. “For instance the Sonic restaurant in town closed several months ago so that’s a vacant space. Rather than type of business I think more wanting to fill the vacant spaces that we have around town. There are quite a few great retail and commercial spaces in Savannah as well as in greater Andrew County and we’d love to have those full and flourishing with whatever type of business someone would be interested in doing here.”

She said she wants to work towards strengthening the chamber’s presence.

“My initial directive is to build what we have and to then start to shape what is that going to look like in the future,” Ingersoll said. “I don’t have any specific new event that I’m going to be doing or anything like that. I’m really taking a pulse right now. My first three months here are going to be out talking to the membership and talking to people who aren’t members. Maybe they were and have fallen off or never joined the chamber and finding out why and what they hope to see the chamber doing. It’s really about planning here over the next 90 days.”

A Savannah man has been charged in connection with the shooting death of his girlfriend on New Year’s at the Amazonia Ball Park.

Jay Patrick Bowman, 21 has been charged in connection with the shooting death of Stephanie Bradberry, 24 of Savannah.  Bowman is charged with first degree murder, second degree murder, armed criminal action, first degree domestic assault and possession of marijuana.

Court documents at 12:12 the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call of a female who has been shot at the Ball Field on State Route T.

Andrew County Deputies and the Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the scene to find Bradberry dead with a gunshot wound to the head.  Bowman was detained by authorities at the scene.

“Jay advised that the victim was his live in girlfriend and that they had a child in common,” Investigator Grant Gillett with the Andrew County Sheriff’s Dept. said. “Jay went on to say that they had been at the Amazonia VFW Bar and Grill and they both had been drinking alcohol.  They left there and went to a friend’s house where they both used narcotics (marijuana). While at the house Jay stated that they got into an argument and left to go home.  However, while traveling down State Route T heading back to Savannah they continued to argue in the vehicle, that Jay indicated he was operating.  Jay stated that he pulled over at the top of the entrance to the Amazonia Ball Field where he exited the vehicle.   While exiting the vehicle Jay stated that ‘I took my .22 caliber handgun with me to keep her from hurting herself with the gun.’ I told her I was just going to walk home and she could take the vehicle home.”

“Jay stated he walked to the north side of the building where he was standing and his girlfriend came driving the vehicle around the building,” Gillett said. “She stopped the vehicle and got out and they again began to argue verbally and it went into a physical altercation. Jay stated that he still had the gun in his right hand and they started pushing each other and during the altercation the gun went off.”

The documents said when she collapsed to the ground Jay dropped the gun and called 911.

Officers searched the vehicle and located a metal smoking pipe with marijuana residue, marijuana and half a burned marijuana cigarette.

Bowman is being held without bond at the Andrew County Jail.  The investigation continues.

The standoff prompted evacuations and lockdowns around the area as well as business and highway closures.

2. Increase in violent crimes in St. Joseph and Buchanan County
In 2015 there were eight murders in the city and another four in the county. That’s up almost three times from 2014.

“Dr. Newhart has proven he can make tough decisions and has tackled extremely difficult projects since July,” stated board president Brad Haggard on Nov. 17. “He continues to work through the 22- point board priority checklist, streamline the district finances, align the business office and human resources office with updated policies and procedures, all while getting to know our students and staff. It hasn’t been easy and we recognize our district needs his strong leadership at this critical time.”

Newhart was hired during the middle of an ongoing FBI Investigation into the district. On Dec. 11 a seventh grand jury subpoena was received by the district to produce documents for review.

4. Playground Assault draws national attention

In Oct., a 12-year-old girl was charged with a class D felony for assault on school property. The charge is in connection with an assault that allegedly took place at Hosea Elementary School and gained national attention after the video footage went viral on social media.

The video depicts a young girl repeatedly punching and kicking another girl, and dragging her by the hair some 30 feet or more across the asphalt pavement.

5. St. Joseph business owner pleads guilty to misdemeanor after bar assault

Kendall Randolph pleaded guilty in Nov. to two misdemeanors for third degree assault. The charges stem from an incident outside the Brown Bear on St Joseph Avenue.  In sworn court documents, Detective Frank Till with the St. Joseph Police Department cites witness statements asserting Mr Randolph grabbed the victim by the throat and slammed him against the side of a building. In the second count, the affidavit asserts that Mr Randolph “intentionally drove approximately 6-8 feet toward the victim in an attempt to strike the victim with his vehicle.”

The charges stem from an argument outside the Brown Bear Tavern at 2028 St. Joseph Avenue on the night of September 23. After the argument, police went to Mr Randolph’s home, but were held at bay for hours when he refused to come out. He later surrendered and was taken into custody.

Video footage of the incident outside of the bar circulated online and drew a lot of public outcry for the misdemeanor charges.

Law Enforcement hitting the road for New Year’s

mshpOfficers are hitting the road in an effort to keep people safe over New Year’s.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said this year’s 102-hour counting period will be from 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 31, 2015, to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2016.

Over the 2015 New Year’s 102-hour holiday counting period, there were 1,378 traffic crashes, which injured 504 people. There were 11 fatalities during the 2015 New Year’s holiday counting period.

The patrol said many Missourians plan special gatherings to bring in the New Year. Tips for safe travel include: If you’re driving to a New Year’s gathering, remember to buckle up and obey all traffic laws. As you make your way to the party, be a courteous driver. When in doubt, yield the right-of-way. Pay attention and use your turn signal to communicate your intentions to other drivers. The posted speed limit is not a suggestion and reflects the roadway’s classification. There’s no reason to speed—the party starts after you arrive safely.

Be aware of the weather forecast. If inclement weather is expected, allow extra time for traveling or be flexible with your plans. The Road Condition Report number is 1-888-275-6636. Depending on the weather, staying home might be your best option. If you do travel over the New Year’s holiday, remember to take the time to clean snow and ice completely from your vehicle. Making sure the windows are completely cleared increases visibility. Remember: Missouri law states if you’re using your windshield wipers, your headlights must be turned on. It takes only a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. That second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash.

If your plans include alcohol, remember that nothing ruins a party like a DWI arrest or a drinking-related traffic crash on your way home. Designate a sober driver before the party starts. The roadway is no place for a driver who has been drinking. If you cause a traffic crash, your New Year might begin with being arrested, facing legal fees and medical bills, and perhaps jail time.
