Second warning of a driver’s suspicious behavior issued by St. Joseph School District

SJSDAnother warning of a suspicious man trying to give a student a ride has been issued by the St. Joseph School District.

A middle school girl reported suspicious behavior Tuesday to administrators and police. The student said she was approached as she was walking near Humboldt Elementary School Tuesday afternoon after school.

An unidentified man offered to give her a ride, which made her uncomfortable. The district said the student ran to a safe place at Humboldt School and promptly informed staff members and police were notified.

In the most current report the man is described as having a chubby build, dirty blond hair and in his mid 30’s. The man was said to be driving a Grey/blue ford pickup traveling west on Cherry between Dewey and Main.

It’s the second warning regarding a man displaying suspicious behavior by the district in eight days. On Dec. 1 the district issued a similar warning of a white man with dirty blond hair, a scruffy beard, with a large build and of average height attempting to offer a high school girl a ride on her way to Central High School. That man was reported to be driving a gray car with a great dane sticker on the back window.

“We join the police in urging all students and their families to take precautions while away from home and particularly while traveling to and from school,” said Joey Austin, Dir. of Communications with the district. “All students are encouraged to not walk or wait alone while en route to school or at the bus stop.”

The police are asking residents to report any suspicious activities to their attention by calling (816) 271-4777. Students at school with information to report or with concerns should contact any school administrator or counselor.

“Our school district will be working closely with the police to assure the safety of our students,” Austin said.

Free haircuts, manicures and hairdos were offered to more than 20 students Wednesday at Truman Middle School.

In an effort to provide students a “new outlook for the new year” the school hosted what it calls a Pamper Party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We decided to try to raise some self-esteem, give them a holiday gift,” said Amber Smith, School Nurse. “Self-esteem, school attendance, school performance, health all kind of go hand-in-hand so we thought if we could make them feel awesome and hopefully this will extend beyond one day that this will help in other areas of school also.”

Various hairstylists from local businesses and salons volunteered their time to the pamper party.

“I got my makeup done and my nails done,” said Hailey Walker, a student at Truman. “It was fun. I learned how to do my nails a lot better and a lot fancier and I learned how to put on proper makeup.”

Ethan Brown is also a student at Truman and said he got his hair cut.

“I really like it a lot,” Brown said. “I decided to get it a lot longer at the top and shorter as it went down and got my hair parted to the side.”

Brown and Walker both said the day made them feel better.

Six stylists and more than 25 students took part in the event.

“There was no process we had for picking students,” Smith said. “The kids are excited, their parents are excited for them, some of them maybe couldn’t provide this for them otherwise at home.”

School Principal Jason Callaway also took part in the event helping to paint fingernails.

Plane wreckage found in Daviess County

Emergency AccidentA small plane that went missing after taking off from a northwest Missouri airport Sunday afternoon has been found nearly two days later.

Several news outlets are reporting that Kenny Stoner, identified as the Rideway pilot and sole occupant of the plane has been confirmed deceased.

“The wreckage is located. It is north of Pattonsburg Mo. in Daviess County. It is west I believe of Interstate 35 in a very rural wooded area there,” said James Boothe, Gentry County Emergency Management Dir. “We have crews currently on the way into the wreckage.”

The plane was found around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

As we previously reported, Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White said the pilot of the Cessna 180 attempted to re-fuel Sunday afternoon at the Northwest Missouri Regional Airport in Maryville but was unable to do so. The plane was low on fuel when it left for Bethany, Missouri, and never arrived.

More than 100 people have assisted with the search operation.

Gas prices expected to continue to fall

gas pricesGas prices are expected to fall below the $2 mark across the nation for the first time since 2009.

According to AAA pump prices have fallen for 29 of the past 31 days. As of Monday the national average is less than a penny higher than the 2015 low (January 26), and should soon fall below the $2 per gallon mark for the first time since 2009. It said Monday’s average price of $2.03 represents a savings of one cent per gallon on the week and 19 cents on the month. Significant yearly savings persist, and gas prices are discounted by 65 cents per gallon compared to this same date last year.

Missouri’s average for regular unleaded Monday was $1.81 a gallon, the same as this time last week and 28 cents lower than a month ago. In St. Joseph the average came in at $1.79, 1 cent lower than a week ago and a drop of 27 cents in a month.

AAA said OPEC’s decision at its meeting last week to sustain its current production levels sent ripples through the global oil market and has contributed to lower oil prices. The cartel is not scheduled to reconvene until June 2016, and in the interim the imbalance between supply and demand will likely persist.

Police say drugs found in infant’s diaper bag in Andrew County

Three people are facing drug charges after deputies stopped two vehicles in Andrew County Sunday and found what they believe to be marijuana in a diaper bag.

24-year-old Shyan Nicole McPike of Fillmore is charged with felonies for possession of marijuana, endangering the welfare of a child involving drugs, and driving while revoked/suspended.  She is also charged with misdemeanors for resisting/interfering with arrest, possession of marijuana and an infraction for failing to secure a child under the age of 8 in a child restraint.  28-year-old Garrett Miles Rutherford of Fillmore and  60-year-old Herbert Davis of Fillmore are both charged with a felony for possession.

According to court documents the charges stem from an incident that took place just before 2 a.m. Sunday when Deputy Daniel Glidden was on patrol on County Road 7 and the intersection of County Road 13. He said he saw a black dodge drive by followed by a white ford flatbed truck driven by McPike who he said he had a revoked license and an active warrant out of Andrew County.

“Deputy Glidden then advised that the vehicle was failing to yield and a black dodge truck was in front of her and they were approaching State Route H,” Investigator Grant Gillett with the Andrew County Sheriff’s Department said in a probable cause statement. “Deputy Glidden advised that the black truck was pulling over however the white truck Shyan was driving went around the black truck now.  Deputy Glidden advised that the driver of the black truck was Shyan’s boyfriend Garrett Rutherford and he believed he was attempting to block Deputy Glidden from chasing Shyan or getting her to stop.”

After passing the black dodge Deputy Glidden said he was able to stop the truck driven by McPike about a half mile east of H Highway.  He said there was an 8-month-old girl in the passenger seat in a car seat but that the car seat was not restrained by the seat belt of the truck.

“I later deployed my police K-9 ‘Jak’ to do an open air sniff of the truck he indicated to the presence of the odor of narcotics in the truck,” Deputy Glidden said. “A search of the truck revealed a clear bag with a white in color crystal substance on the inside of the truck on the seat between McPike and the toddler, that later tested positive for meth.  Also in a diaper bag for the toddler there was a bag with a green in color substance on the inside that appeared to be marijuana.”

Investigator Gillett said he pulled over the other truck.

“I made contact with the driver of the truck who was identified as Herbert F. Davis and the front passenger Garrett Rutherford,” Gillett said. “Deputy Glidden advised that Garrett was driving the truck when he went by them because he shined his spot light in the vehicle.  Garrett refused to say he was driving.”

After a K-9 sniff of the vehicle Gillett said he opened the passenger door and found a clear plastics bag fall from the truck ad land on the ground.

“I picked up the bag and noticed it had a crystal rock substance inside the bag that appeared to be methamphetamine,”Gillett said.

“Under Miranda Rights Garrett did admit to have been driving at first but thought he was suspended so he switched drivers.  Garrett stated that the drugs are not his and does not know how it got into his truck,” Gillett said. “Herbert advised that the drugs were not his and that it had to be Garrett’s he was on that side of the truck.”

All three are scheduled for an arraignment Tuesday in Andrew County.

Savannah R3 Savage mascot logoA student is in custody after authorities said a threat was made at Savannah High School Monday morning.

Sgt. Corey Root with MSHP said a 16-year-old girl is being referred to juvenile authorities after Savannah High School officials placed the school on lockdown.

“Around 8-thirty this morning, school officials received what they believed was a threat for student safety. Therefore they notified law enforcement,” Sgt. Root said. “Savannah Police Department, Andrew County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol responded.”

The Savannah R-III school district confirmed in a news release that a threatening note was found in the girl’s restroom Monday morning.

The district said by 9 a.m. a student was identified as a possible suspect and was isolated in the office.

“There was a threat that was made and obviously all threats are taken as credible and the response from local law enforcement was made,” Sgt. Root said.

The district said movement in the high school was restricted and students and staff remained in classrooms for about 45 minutes with several law enforcement officials present throughout the school until the possible suspect was identified.

Authorities search for missing plane outside Maryville

police lights featureMARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a small plane is missing after taking off from a northwest Missouri airport.

Nodaway County Sheriff Darren White says the pilot of the Cessna 180 attempted to re-fuel Sunday afternoon at the Northwest Missouri Regional Airport in Maryville but was unable to do so. The plane was low on fuel when it left for Bethany, Missouri, and never arrived.

White said the Ridgeway pilot was the plane’s sole occupant. Authorities began the search for the plane Sunday night, but the plane and pilot remained missing Monday morning.

White says that search operations were placed at a “standstill” early Monday because of thick fog. Authorities planned to search by air as soon as the fog lifted later in the morning.
