Showers moving north along the Kansas-Missouri state line, into northwest Missouri, will persist through much of the morning, adding to local flooding issues that are already ongoing. But, this afternoon strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front that will sweep through the region tonight. There will be a threat of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes with the strongest of the afternoon and evening storms, generally in areas from east central Kansas into central and northern Missouri. Today will feel more like August with high temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s and heat indices in the lower to mid 90s. This heat will be accompanied by wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph in the afternoon, so it would be a good idea to tie down or remove objects that are easily moved by higher winds. These higher winds will also lead to elevated fire weather concerns as any fire that does start may quickly get out of hand, so use caution if burning Wednesday afternoon. Parts of northwest MO will struggle to reach 60 degrees, meanwhile, most of the state will see highs in the 70s and even mid 80s.
