Warm and dry conditions will be the rule today with highs in the mid 60s to near 70. However, these warm conditions coupled with breezy southwesterly winds will lead to another day of very high fire danger. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. A very mild day is on tap with highs in the 70s. However, those mild temperatures will come with three different types of weather threats. The first will be the wind advisory which begins at 10 a.m. and goes through 6 p.m. This advisory will be for sustained winds out of the south between 30-35 mph with gusts to 45-50 mph. The second threat will be the Red Flag Warning in effect for northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Burning should be avoided. Anything that does ignite will quickly burn out of control. The third threat will be the chance for severe weather this evening. Large hail, damaging winds, as well as an isolated tornado will all be possible. There are two primary concerns for today: fire and severe weather. Already gusty winds this morning will persist and perhaps strengthen a bit more this afternoon. Gusty winds combined with dry conditions will create a heightened fire weather concern for many locations this afternoon, and critical conditions expected specifically within the Red Flag Warning (includes the entire Kansas City metro area as well as counties south and west). For this evening into tonight, the concern then becomes the chance for strong to potentially severe thunderstorms developing along and ahead of a cold front dropping down from the northwest. Locations from Unionville through the Kansas City metro area as well as locations south and east have the greatest chances of seeing any storm that develops becoming strong to severe.
