Missouri man dies after car overturns

ATCHISON COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 2p.m. Tuesday in Atchison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Tommy D. Fisher, 51, Wasola, was southbound on Route N six miles southeast of Tarkio.

The vehicle traveled off the west side of the road and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle returned to the road, skidded off the west side of the road, hit several large pieces of concrete and overturned.

Atchison-Holt EMS transported Fisher to Fairfax Hospital where he died. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP.

Hiland Dairy issues recall for milk sold in St. Joseph

KANSAS CITY, MO – Hiland Dairy is announcing a voluntary recall of half-gallon premium whole milk chocolate that is produced at the Kansas City, Missouri facility, over concerns the products may contain eggnog that could affect those individuals that have sensitivity to egg allergens. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported at this time.

The affected products were sold and distributed at retailers in the Kansas City metropolitan area including Topeka, Kansas and St. Joseph, Missouri. The affected product information is below:

Hiland Dairy initially learned of a potential issue and then confirmed after internal quality control testing at the Kansas City facility. 1,151 one-half gallon units of Hiland Whole Chocolate Milk were affected. The company promptly contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to initiate the voluntary product recall.

Other Hiland Dairy Chocolate Milk including, 2% reduced fat and skim, are not part of this recall.

Customers who have purchased this product are encouraged to discard it or return it to their local retailer to exchange the product for a like item. Hiland Dairy is working in partnership with the FDA to fully investigate the matter and comply with all necessary recall procedures. The Company is also taking the necessary steps to address this issue and apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this product issue.

Parkway skater statue stolen Monday night

The City of St. Joseph is seeking information related to a statue on the Parkway being stolen.

According to a press release, sometime Monday night, one of the three skater statues that are located on the Parkway just north of Corby Pond was broken off at the base and stolen.

The City said the statue can be returned, no questions asked. It can be left at the parks administration building at 1920 Grand Avenue or any visible public place.

Kansas woman dies after DeKalb County semi crash

DEKALB COUNTY — One person died in an accident just after 11a.m. Monday in DeKalb County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Chevy Impala driven by Cheri A. Edwards, 51, Troy, entered southbound MO. 31 just west of Clarksdale without yielding. A northbound Kenworth semi driven by Thomas L. Belcher, 62, Carrollton.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene. Belcher was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to MSHP.

Authorities investigate man’s death in St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of man in St. Joseph.

Late Sunday, police responded to 133 Gideon Lane where a man’s body was found in a shed, according to Captain Jeff Wilson with St. Joseph Police.

While carbon monoxide is believed to have contributed to the death, the body is being sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities are still working to contact and have not released the man’s name, according to Wilson.

Governor: State offices closed Wednesday to mourn death of President George H.W. Bush

WHEREAS, as the 41st President of the United States, former President George H. W. Bush was a dedicated statesman who led our country through a time of change following the Cold War; and 

WHEREAS, President Bush’s courage, dedication and leadership were evident throughout his lifetime of public service in many different roles, including serving with distinction in the United State Navy, as a delegate to the United Nations, envoy to China and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency prior to being elected President; and 

 

WHEREAS, President Trump has declared Wednesday, December 5, 2018 a National Day of Mourning for President Bush; and  

WHEREAS, State of Kansas offices were closed to mourn the deaths of other Presidents; including Presidents Kennedy, Eisenhower, Truman, Johnson, Reagan and Ford. 

NOW, THEREFORE, pursuant to the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Kansas, I hereby designate Wednesday, December 5, 2018 as a legal holiday in observance of the National day of Mourning for President George H. W. Bush and order that State of Kansas offices are to be closed in observance of the holiday.   

This document shall be filed with the Secretary of State as Executive Order No. 18-20 and shall become effective immediately. 

President’s Holiday Gala Thursday

St. Joseph, Mo. —The Department of Music in the School of Fine Arts at Missouri Western State University will hold the fourth annual President’s Holiday Gala at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 in the Fulkerson Center. Admission is one can of non-perishable food for Missouri Western’s Campus Cupboard, the student food pantry.

The President’s Holiday Gala rings in the holiday season with performances by all ensembles in the Department of Music. This year, the gala will also be a celebration of the work and legacy of Dr. Robert Vartabedian, who will retire next summer after 11 years as Missouri Western’s president.
